A Grieving Family, A Cryogenically Frozen Toddler and a Death, Postponed— ‘Hope Frozen’, dir. Pailin Wedel, 2018

Hope Frozen, Pailin Wedel, movie poster
When a father’s attempts to stop his young daughter’s terminal cancer fail, he persuades the family to look into cryonics so that the girl could have another chance at life in the remote future

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: When Matheryn Naovaratpong, a Thai toddler nicknamed Einz, was pronounced legally dead just before her third birthday after a prolonged battle with ependymoblastoma, her father refused to yield. A laser scientist obsessed with technological and scientific breakthroughs, Sahatorn Naovaratpong had been on a mission to find a cure for the cancer while his daughter’s body was still vital. Now his choice, firmly supported by his wife Nareerat, also a scientist, and whiz kid son Matrix, is to preserve Einz’s body using cryogenics. Once the technology has advanced enough to get rid of Einz’s illness, her body will be revived and cured, and she will be able to finally live a life. But in Thailand’s Buddhist society, the Naovaratpong’s choices are not universally welcomed by all, and the family has to grapple with their religion, scientific faith, and various ethical concerns that come with the decision to make Einz the youngest ever person to be cryogenically preserved.

WHO MADE IT: Pailin Wedel is a Bangkok-based self-described visual storyteller. Of Thai and American ancestry, she has been making reportage documentaries for numerous outlets, including Al Jazeera and Nat Geo, as well as worked as a producer for Associated Press. “Hope Frozen†is Wedel’s first foray into feature-length filmmaking.

The film features the whole Naovaratpong clan, including extended family and the three junior children born after Einz’s passing.

Alcor Life Extension Foundation, which is responsible for the preservation of Einz’s body, is an American NGO specializing in cryonics. As of late 2019, they had 172 corpses preserved in their facility in Arizona, including that of Einz and baseball star Ted Williams.

Robert McIntyre, an award-winning scientist who had been able to preserve and then successfully unfreeze a rabbit’s brain, is also featured in the film. His current company Nectome is working on preserving memories when the brain is resuscitated after a dry-freeze.

WHY DO WE CARE: While there seems to be a universal agreement on the value of all human life, as we can see in the film, the avenues of exploration left to those recovering from loss vary massively by economic background. Although the physical manifestations are quite similar—rites of passage and memorial rituals, whether they’re conducted by the empty cradle or by a nitrogen-filled tank preserving the body—the mere promise of the person’s reboot is limited to those who can pay a hefty fee. And that could be assessed as a payment for the luxury of comfort; however, it’s not exactly clear how much hope and comfort the situation offers.

Scientifically, it is impossible to know whether any of the efforts made by cryonics will ever pay off. And the film goes into some of these considerations when towards the end of the film, Matrix gets to talk to Robert McIntyre and learns that while the physical arousal of the freeze-dried brain is possible, the preservation of memories is altogether different, as of yet unresolved issue. Although Einz passed away at a young age, before being able to accumulate much knowledge or even cognizance of her family, the idea of her being resuscitated in the future without the remnants of her identity and self adds nuance to Matrix’s perspective, as he worriedly tells his family.

The film doesn’t go into these considerations deep enough, probably not wanting to burden the family with challenges to their position. After all, they had already borne the brunt of the Thai press sensationalizing the story as well as the Buddhist community claiming the girl’s soul was being trapped. However, in the viewer’s mind, such questions arise, and they are plentiful. Will Einz, once resurrected, be alone, or reunited with the family? Is everyone getting cryo? What are the chances of Einz being a completely different human than she could have been if her memory is wiped? And if everything goes according to plan, will a teenager who grows up in the era of technological advancements be able to find common ground with her elderly parents from a couple of centuries ago while also not feeling excluded from her reality? These are all interesting questions to consider, but, perhaps, better left explored in sci-fi work, torn away from the complicated situation of an existing family, which already has enough on their plate to grapple with.

WHY YOU NEED TO WATCH: “Hope Frozen†is a thought-provoking exploration of technology-obsessed people redefining the concepts of human life and family. For some, it might seem like a unique look at a loss within one family determined to find solace and a primer of some of the world’s scientific frontiers. For others, it may be easily written off as a manifestation of individualism akin to the worship of singularity or a pursuit that eschews the communitarian needs of the society that require that some people die. Either way, it is impossible to look at the film without marveling how medicine, science, and the afterlife have become entwined with capital. While affordable healthcare varies on a country-by-country basis, dying and getting interred seems to be a costly affair virtually everywhere. Yet, innovative alternatives are introduced, even more uncertain and expensive, making the business of death a formidable financial contender and drawing parallels to the lucrative underside of organized religion.

The emphasis on what can come after the lights go out leads to a weird ethical split. Are we abstaining from putting much emphasis on the current events of human life, with systems of grave negligence widespread and dangerous, because we’re piling all the hopes on the afterlife, whether it’s a religious concept or something to be solved by the scientific community? And will relinquishing responsibility in the hopes for a do-over become a sort of contemporary indulgence?

And yet, the family at the center of “Hope Frozen†is sympathetic, and their preoccupation with science and its effects on life—and death—seems genuine, and secondary to authentic human connection, unlike what you see in the examples of Elon Musk. The way they unite together, whether it’s to prepare for Einz’s departure or to visit her body in the industrial constraints of the cryogenics facility, is tender and heartwrenching.

And even if the Naovaratpong’s quest against the current state of knowledge and technology might not seem a journey worth taking to the viewer, their reasoning, rooted in the inability to accept the loss, is human, flawed, and very relatable. A documentary that offers insight into a fascinating issue while also staying very respectful to its subjects, “Hope Frozen†is an honest portrait of a 21st-century family: incredibly smart parents, an adorable teenager who oozes promise, younger siblings who were born after the tragedy, and the middle daughter concealed in a cryo tank. And while numerous articles on the Naovaratpongs and their decision have been written, it’s Wedel’s warm, affecting film that will be of interest in posterity. Will someone watch it, centuries onwards? And what will the outtake be?

Regal Theaters Announces That They’ll Reopen In July

2020 hasn’t been a good year for anyone, and although it seems like each month adds some new devastating event, one pervasive constant has remained – the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. It’s now infected nearly 8 million people worldwide and claimed the lives of 435,000. As it continues its global spread, millions of folks around the world have been stuck inside during the lengthy shutdown that’s also seen businesses being forced to close their doors and lose out on tons of money.

Despite the pandemic showing no signs of slowing down though, the economy is now beginning to reopen in some countries. The US – which remains the epicenter of the virus with 2.2 million cases and 120,000 deaths – is one such country that’s seeing a number of major business begin opening their doors to the public once again. And among those many businesses is Regal Theaters, who took to Twitter today to announce the date they intend to reopen.

The popular theater chain will resume business on July 10th but will be doing so with substantial safety guidelines in place to help ensure visitors remain virus-free. Some of the ways they’re keeping things clean and safe is by monitoring employees via regular health screening and temperature checks. In addition, they’ll be reducing register access, making use of contactless payment methods, requiring masks for both employees and visitors, and maxing out at 50% theater capacity so that no one sits too close to one another. In fact, they’ll be enforcing the latter by only selling tickets that are at least two seats apart.

Meanwhile, AMC Theatres has recently reopened a few overseas locations but hasn’t announced a firm date on when their US spots will resume business, though the company has confirmed that they intend to reopen all of their theaters in July.

What movie made you like movies?

For me, it was when I watched Cool Hand Luke with my dad as a kid. He showed me it when I was young and ever since then I can’t stop watching movies. I love going to movie theaters even though they are really expensive and I hope they don’t die off as streaming becomes more and more popular. What movie is the movie that got you interested in them?

Why Pinhead Dies So Early In Hellraiser 2

Horror icon and acupuncture enthusiast Pinhead is the most recognizable face in the Hellraiser movie franchise. Bringing up the series conjures images of the pale, terrifying visage in even the most casual fan. The problem is, he isn’t the most important character in the first two films. Pinhead shows up for a little while in the first movie before meeting his end in the second one. He dies at the hands of the pic’s true antagonist, newly minted Cenobite Dr. Chennard.

Still, it’s a testament to the writing in the Hellraiser series that Pinhead manages an arc between two short appearances. In the first film, his initial objective is Frank Cotton, a dead man trying to scheme his way back into the realm of the living. Pinhead initially stands alongside heroine Kirsty in capturing Cotton and returning him to the Cenobites’ “care.” He turns on her in the last act though, intending to drag her back, too. Her escape leads directly into Hellraiser 2, where Pinhead actually shows up in Kirsty’s defense against the aforementioned Chennard. He subsequently dies in the attempt.

That death manages to elevate a character that could have been a simplistic villain into someone with more dimension. It helps with the world-building inside Hellraiser’s lore, too. Pinhead illustrates what happens when and if Cenobites – created when humans give themselves over to Leviathan, the creatures’ deity and patron – regain their humanity. There’s even some of Pinhead’s origin story as WWI veteran Elliot Spencer woven into the beginning of Hellraiser 2. Pinhead’s death gets rid of an easy out, too: the humans are left on their own to fight the antagonist.

Of course, Hellraiser 3 brings the character back and more into the spotlight, giving us more of his origin story. But for those first two movies, Pinhead manages the trick of remaining mysterious and threatening while still showing an arc, and his death plays into that.

Ewan McGregor To Voice Jiminy Cricket In Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

In an interview with ACE Universe, actor Ewan McGregor revealed that he’ll be voicing Jiminy Cricket in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming adaptation of Pinocchio.

Based on a collection of Italian bedtime stories about a wooden marionette wanting to become a real child, the Pinocchio character was first made famous by Disney, who produced an animated feature on the subject in the 1940s. Apparently, del Toro has been wanting to tackle the intellectual property himself for quite some time.

At first glance, you may wonder why the director of thrillers likePan’s Labyrinthand the Academy Award-winning adult drama The Shape of Water wants to adapt such childish source material. However, the story of Pinocchio is actually surprisingly dark. From escaping child slavery to battling a monstrous, carnivorous whale, the character has traversed more dangers than some of Disney’s most seasoned knights.

Then there’s McGregor himself who, as fans of films like Christopher Robin and Trainspotting know already, has quite a graveling and mature voice. Compared to Cliff Edwards, who lent his soothing vocal cords to the character of Jiminy in Disney’s initial adaptation, this casting decision seems to imply that Pinocchio’s consciousness is going to act a lot more mature this time around.

Ewan McGregor

According to McGregor, Guillermo’s film – which will be made using stop-motion as opposed to traditional animation – is well underway. Telling ACE reporters he had already recorded some of his lines, it’s safe to say that production on the project is long past development. A script exists, actors have been cast and now, all we need is our first look at what will be – knowing the director – a visually captivating movie.

Do you think McGregor makes a good fit for Jiminy Cricket in this Pinocchio adaptation, though? Let us know in the comments below.

Wonder Woman 1984: First Proper Look At Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah Makeup

A partial look at Kristen Wiig's Cheetah in the film Wonder Woman 1984 has been revealed thanks to a sticker pack.Originally supposed to release last year, Wonder Woman 1984 is the sequel to thecritically acclaimed Wonder Woman film, which earned over $800 million at the box office. Set in 1984, the film will focus on Wonder Woman (the returning Gal Gadot) dealing with powerful businessman Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and her co-worker Barbara Ann Minerva. Chris Pine's Steve Trevor will also be back for the sequel, despite sacrificing himself in the first film.

Making her first appearance in 1943, Cheetah is regarded as one of Wonder Woman's longest lasting rivals in her rogues gallery. Fans already know the Wonder Woman 1984 take on Cheetah will show her to be a shy woman fueled by low self-esteem, which eventually leads to her Cheetah transformation. It's also expected Maxwell Lord will play a role, as photos have shown the two will be close and likely even in a romantic relationship.

Related: How to Watch Every DCEU Movie Online

One of Wonder Woman 1984's biggest mysteries has been Cheetah's appearance after she transforms. Now, DCEU Updates on Twitter has another clue, thanks to images from a sticker pack showing Wiig in her Cheetah makeup. The look is quite extreme, with a slightly yellow face, black lines, and elongated ears. While fans have been given some ideas as to what Cheetah will look like (thanks to toys, Halloween costumes, and the like), this is one of the first clear looks at her in movie-ready condition. Check it out below:

Even though fans has seen teases here or there of Cheetah's look post-transformation, they have yet to see it in action. The trailers and official photos for Wonder Woman 1984 have intentionally left it out. As this point, it seems likely fans won't see footage of Wiig's Cheetah post-transformation until the movie comes out in October. This is smart on DC's part, as it will make for an exciting moment when fans finally get to see the film.

Cheetah has had a wide variety of appearances over the years, so time will tell if this approach to the character will hold up as well as some of her other iconic appearances. Wiig has had plenty of experience acting, and it will be interesting seeing how an actor who has mostly been in comedic roles will play a villain known for her rage and brutality. DC movies have generally been praised for their makeup (with Suicide Squad even winning an Oscar for it), so if there are any faults with Wonder Woman 1984, it feels likely makeup and character design will not be one of them.

Little Devil Inside Allegedly Racist Character Design Is Being Changed

After receiving backlash from their potential playerbase, Neostream Interactive has vowed to change a character design in their upcoming game Little Devil Insidethat many have claimed to be racist. This came mere hours after the game came under fire after its announcement at thePS5 online reveal event on June 11th, prompting a quick and hopefully proportional developer response.

The PS5 reveal stream last week was packed with no less than 26 games that would be coming to the PS5 between its release and 2022. Among the giants of Spider-Man: Miles Morales and yet another Grand Theft Auto V port, viewers were treated to a trailer of the ambitious crowdfunded game Little Devil Inside, whose PS5 exclusivity was news to even backers. With a sleek art style and charming sense of humor, Little Devil Inside held its ground amongst its more well-funded competition during the showcase, but an insensitive enemy design choice marred the game's exhibition.

Related: PS5: All 38 Games Confirmed To Release & When

Would-be fans of the game took to Twitter to voice their concerns and outrage over a masked enemy design, tiny tribespeople with dark skin, dreadlocks, and masks with prominent red lips shown in the game's reveal trailer. The following day, Neostream Interactive made a statement via the Facebook, apologizing to anyone they might have offended and stating that they would be making a number of adjustments to the design and that "if it ends up not being suitable to the game as a whole, [they] may change the design entirely." Read disappointed viewer reactions below:

The issues surrounding this character design doesn't just stop with the design itself, however, but becomes more problematic in the context of the game. The trailer shows a number of monstrous enemy types that the player is seen discovering, running from, or fighting, but these afro-tribal caricatures are the only humans the player character is seen interacting with in the same manner. Oversight or not, it's an innate comparison of real-world stereotypes to the inhuman monsters that gamers are used to battling. Combine this with a setting that seems to draw inspiration from the Age of Discovery (famous for its plunder of indigenous peoples' wealth and cultures) and the thoroughly bad taste left in viewers' mouths makes even greater sense.

Neostream Interactive made the right choice by listening to their fanbase, having responded quickly and accordingly. They didn't try to assign blame, instead choosing to own the mistake and promising to right it. This kind of transparency and communication from developers is commendable and welcome in an age of predatory business practices by publishers of larger games, especially during the current sociopolitical moment. Aside from the problematic design of this one enemy type, Little Devil Inside looks like it will give players a balanced experience of survival and adventure, and is set to release on PlayStation consoles and PC.

Django Unchained: Django's 14 Greatest Quotes | ScreenRant

Of all the iconic characters he’s created, Quentin Tarantino feels a special connection to Django, the slave who became a bounty hunter with perfect aim and used his newfound abilities to liberate his fellow slaves.

RELATED:Django Unchained's 10 Best Action Scenes, Ranked

Tarantino has never made a sequel to any of his movies, but his script for The Hateful Eight began as a sequel to Django Unchained, he’s announced his intention to write a series of sequel novels continuing Django’s story, and he’s written an official sequel in the form of a comic book that is currently being adapted into a movie.

Updated on June 15th, 2020 by Ben Sherlock: Despite the acclaim received by Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Django Freeman is arguably still Quentin Tarantino’s most beloved hero. Jerrod Carmichael has reportedly been hired to turn the comic book sequel to Django Unchained, which paired up the slave-turned-bounty hunter with the swashbuckling icon Zorro, into a script for a movie. That movie could fall into the rut of development hell, or it could turn into something spectacular. In the meantime, we’ve updated this list with a few new entries.

14 “I Count Two Guns.â€

Apparently, this line wasn’t in the original script. While the cast and crew were shooting the final showdown, someone noticed that Django had already fired six shots throughout the scene and brought this to Quentin Tarantino’s attention.

The writer-director disappeared into his trailer for a few minutes and returned with two newly written lines: one for Stephen with“I count six shots,†and a retort for Django, “I count two guns.â€

13 “What Kind Of Dentist Are You?â€

There are plenty of great duos in Tarantino’s filmography – Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega, Mr. White and Mr. Orange, Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth etc. – but arguably the most iconic is the team of Django and Dr. King Schultz.

In the opening scene, as Django is being marched through the woods with a chain gang, Dr. Schultz rolls up in a stagecoach with a giant tooth on it. When Django sees Dr. Schultz killing people for money, the question has to be asked: “What kind of dentist are you?â€

12 “Cora, Before You Go, Will You Tell Miss Lara Goodbye?â€

When Lara, Stephen, Billy Crash, and the rest of Calvin Candie’s closest loved ones return from his funeral, Django is waiting in the house for their arrival. He tells Cora, one of Lara’s slaves, to tell her “goodbye†before leaving.

A little confused, Cora says, “Bye, Miss Lara.†And, quick as a whip, Django shoots Lara in the chest and sends her flying into the next room. Then, Django tells Cora to “run along now†and she leaves the house in a hurry.

11 “It’s Me, Baby...â€

When Django comes to rescue Broomhilda forthe second time, she cowers in fear as the door swings open, revealing Django’s silhouette. For all she knows, her captors are back for another horrific assault.

But the soothing voice of her husband assures her that she’s in safe hands when he says, “It’s me, baby.†Upon hearing Django’s voice, she lets out a huge sigh of relief.

10 “You Didn’t Mention Kneecapping.â€Â

Like most of Tarantino’s movies, Django Unchained is an ode to the satisfaction of a good revenge plot. When Django returns to Calvin Candie’s plantation, he can’t wait to dole out some retribution to Stephen, Calvin’s house slave, who tortured Django.

When he captured Django, Stephen said that he’d seen all kinds of things done to slaves. What Django noticed is that he didn’t mention kneecapping. And after pointing this out to him, he shoots Stephen in the kneecap.

9 “I’m curious what makes you so curious.â€Â

The acting in Django Unchained is incredible. Not only do the actors give terrific performances in their roles, they also have brilliant chemistry with one another and build real relationships on the screen. For example, Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz developed a real friendship as Django and his mentor Dr. Schultz. And the tension is palpable in the scenes between Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio where Django is trying to hide the fact that he’s not really a black slaver and Calvin is trying to figure out Django’s deal. This line is a perfect example of that, as the two are constantly trying to one-up each other.

8 “Y’all gonna be together with Calvin in the by-and-by...just a bit sooner than y’all was expecting!â€Â

In the final scene of Django Unchained, the title character is waiting at Calvin Candie’s house for the mourners to return from his funeral. He hears them singing the classical Christian hymn “In the Sweet By-and-By,†a song about losing a loved one and promising to meet them “in the sweet by-and-by†(in other words, in the sweet embrace of death when they, too, die). So, he starts singing along and they’re shocked to see him. He tells them that all of them will, in fact, be meeting Calvin “in the by-and-by†– immediately, because he is about to kill them.

7 “You better listen to your boss, white boy!â€Â

When Django is a guest of Calvin Candie’s, he can pretty much get away with anything, because Calvin isn’t going to order his guys to do anything to him. He takes advantage of this, yanking one of Calvin’s men off his horse and getting away with it scot free, and uses it to talk down to the white people who really, really hate him for it – particularly Billy Crash.

One of the important points made by Django Unchained is that the white slavers weren’t just following orders or a product of their time, which some people try to use to defend them – they really were vicious racists who judged people based on the color of their skin and nothing else.

6 “Let’s get out of here.â€Â

This is Django’s final line in the movie. He’s finally managed to save his wife Broomhilda, he’s burned down Calvin Candie’s house after killing all of his friends, family, and employees, and now, he’s atop his horse, ready to ride off into the sunset with the love of his life. At first, they stick around to watch the house burn and enjoy their long-awaited reunion. But then Django simply says they should get out of there and they ride off together. The final lines of Tarantino movies are always memorable. In fact, Pulp Fiction ends with a similar exchange to this one. Vincent says, “I think we oughtta leave now,†to which Jules replies, “That’s probably a good idea.â€Â

5 “Kill white folks and they pay you for it? What’s not to like?â€Â

Jamie Foxx generated some controversy during the promotional tour for Django Unchained when he appeared on Saturday Night Live and said in his monologue, “I kill all the white people in the movie, how great is that?†But come on, the white people in the movie are slave owners, so the fact that he enjoys killing them is sort of justified. He even says a version of that quote in the movie as Dr. Schultz introduces him to the bounty hunting business. The dentist asks him if he enjoys the bounty hunter trade and he says there’s no downside to getting paid to “kill white folks.â€Â

4 “Hey, little troublemaker.â€Â

This is what Django says to his wife Broomhilda that makes her faint in Calvin Candie’s house. He’s the last person she was expecting to see, as they’d been torn apart after an escape attempt and sold off to different plantations. She had no idea the kind of adventure he’d been on, getting freed by a dentist and being trained as a bounty hunter and leading the charge to Candie’s plantation to rescue her. He utters this line a few times in the movie, but the first time, when she faints and Dr. Schultz calls Django a “silver-tongued devil,†is the best-known.

3 “D’Artagnan, motherf****rs!â€Â

This is Django’s battle cry when he bursts into a room full of runaway slave catchers with his guns drawn and blows them all away. In the third act of Django Unchained, after losing his mentor to Calvin Candie, failing to rescue his wife, and getting sold off to some Australian mining company, Django once again breaks away from his shackles and goes on a rampage across the Deep South. His primary quest is to save his wife, but if he gets the chance to kill some of his oppressors along the way, that’s just dessert. It’s the most action-packed segment of the movie.

2 “I like the way you die, boy.â€Â

What Django does best is reword things that people have said to him later on when he’s exacting his revenge against them. For example, when he comes across “Big John†Brittle, played by M.C. Gainey, he remembers that he once pleaded with him not to whip his wife.

Big John sadistically said to him, “I like the way you beg, boy.†So, now that he has the opportunity to have his vengeance, he gets Big John’s whip and uses it to beat the hell out of him. Then he kills him and tells him, “I like the way you die, boy.â€Â

1 “D-J-A-N-G-O. The D is silent.â€Â

There was a cosmic rightness with Franco Nero’s cameo appearance in Django Unchained. He previously played Django in a series of spaghetti westerns for Sergio Corbucci – the series that inspired Tarantino to have a crack at the genre and name his lead character Django – so it made sense that after Jamie Foxx’s new version of Django told him that the D in his name was silent, he had the perfect response: “I know.†Nero technically wasn’t playing Django; rather, he was playing an original character named Amerigo Vessepi. This was the spaghetti western fan’s alternative of Stan Lee’s cameos in MCU movies.
