Sharad Kelkar, Ananth Mahadevan, Sameer Vidwans and Abhijeet Deshpande react to the demise of Vikram Gokhale

Sharad Kelkar: “A big loss for us. We’ve lost one of our greatest actors. He was the superstar of Marathi cinema. He was, and will remain an inspiration for all of us actor who came after him. He was like an acting school and watching him was like attending classes.”

Sharad Kelkar, Ananth Mahadevan, Sameer Vidwans and Abhijeet Deshpande react to the demise of Vikram Gokhale

Sameer Sanjay Vidwans (director of the Marathi hits Double Seat and Anandi Gopal): “The work that Vikram Gokhale has done is exemplary. We’ve seen him in some Hindi films. But it’s Marathi cinema and theatre where his contribution is unmatched. He was a university of acting. Any aspiring actor can look at his performances for guidance. I shared a close relationship with him. The first Marathi screenplay that I ever wrote Aaghat was directed by Vikram Kaka. What to say? In my opinion, the Hindi film industry could not avail of his acting skills as much as the Marathi film industry. In Hindi, we remember him in Agneepath and Hum…Dil De Chuke Sanam, that’s it. The magic of his performances was not tapped sufficiently in Hindi cinema. Nonetheless his death is a grave loss to not only Marathi and Hindi cinema, but to cinema the world over.”

Abhijeet Deshpande (director Har Har Mahadev): “There was Marlon Brando, Prithviraj Kapoor and Vikram Gokhale. Without doubt the top three actors in the world who mastered both mediums, theatre and cinema with such power and excellence. I knew him personally and had the good fortune to interact with him during Natsamrat. Oddly, true, but he is probably the only actor who eclipsed the great Nana Patekar on screen. Will always be tragic that I never got to direct him. Truly a thespian and a legend. I have no words for his acting prowess.”

Ananth Mahadevan: “A doyen of Marathi theatre and films and Hindi cinema, Vikram Gokhale emerged as an icon of the performing arts. I had the good fortune of working with him in the Sony series Sambhav Asambhav where I first directed him. The chief minister in Gour Hari Dastaan as played by Vikram Gokhale was a memorable character. In Avrodh he played the PM while I played his State secretary. Only last month he had called me to say how much he wanted us to team up for another film. It was a learning experience every time I interacted with him. He had a bout of illness last year but he recovered and bounced back to the sets. How I wish he could have carried on to give us some more moments to cherish on screen! I still remember being humbled receiving my first Best Actor trophy from him for The Sword of Tipu Sultan and Nupoor.”

Bhediya Box Office: Varun Dhawan – Kriti Sanon starrer gets its groove over the weekend; collects Rs. 28.55 cr on opening weekend

After a fair start on Friday, Bhediya has managed to get into the groove over the weekend with good collections evidenced on Saturday and Sunday. There were jumps seen on both the days and that has resulted in the collections turning out to be Rs. 28.55 crores post the weekend. Of course, had the numbers been closer to the Rs. 35-37 crores range then it would have been even nicer. However, it’s all about where are the collections heading now rather than where had they opened, and as long as the trajectory is positive, the shortfall can be taken care of.

Bhediya Box Office: Varun Dhawan - Kriti Sanon starrer gets its groove over the weekend; collects Rs. 28.55 cr on opening weekend

The film collected Rs. 11.50 crores on Sunday and that’s far ahead of Rs. 7.48 crores that the film had collected on Friday. What’s required now is that the collections stay much closer to this number as it can’t afford to have that 40%-50% fall. As long as the collections stay over the Rs. 5.50 crores mark, there would be a possibility of a first week of Rs. 50 crores, and that would allow the Varun Dhawan led film to end up having a reasonable lifetime number.

Meanwhile the film which is collecting blockbuster numbers is Drishyam 2. On Sunday, the film saw further growth in footfalls, as a result of which Ra. 17 crores* more came in. This is excellent, considering the first day numbers were Rs. 15.38 crores and the film is collecting more than that even on the 10th day, which pretty much tells the tale. Also, this is a kind of film which is still fetching audience on the basis of excellent word of mouth, which means there are stable weekdays ahead. So far, the Ajay Devgn starrer has collected Rs. 143.58 crores* and while it would cross the Rs 150 crores mark by tomorrow morning, if not tonight itself, it would be interesting to see how much further than that does it go this week before it has An Action Hero for competition.

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited

Note: All collections as per production and distribution sources

EXCLUSIVE: Giorgia Andriani talks about beau Arbaaz Khan’s ex-wife Malaika Arora; says, “I really like her, and appreciate her”

Actor-producer Arbaaz Khan, who was previously married to Malaika Arora, is currently dating Giorgia Andriani. The duo has been in a steady relationship for a while now. In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, Giorgia briefly talked about her relationship with Arbaaz while speaking her mind on Khan’s former wife Malaika Arora.

EXCLUSIVE: Giorgia Andriani talks about beau Arbaaz Khan’s ex-wife Malaika Arora; says, “I really like her, and appreciate her”

It all happened when we asked if she has met Malaika. In her quick response, Giorgia said, “I’ve met her many times.” Elaborating on the same, she added, “I really like her and I appreciate her journey a lot. She also started from zero basically, she was a model so then slowly she reached where she has reached and Kudos to her. For me, she’s definitely somebody that I do admire.”

For the unversed, Arbaaz and Malaika were married for 18 years before parting ways. While Malaika started dating Arjun Kapoor, Arbaaz’s relationship with Georgia started making headlines after his divorce.

During the same interview, Giorgia also opened up on the age difference between her and Arbaaz, which is nearly 22 years. “If for me, if the person is like 100 years old, I will still talk to them if they are like fun, I would still talk to them. Or if the person is younger than me for that matter. It’s not that I’m like, no, you’re younger than me, so I won’t talk to you. Age for me is really just a number,” said the Italian model.

Coming to their respective professional front, Giorgia is yet to leave a mark in Bollywood while Arbaaz was last seen in a web series, titled Tanaav.

EXCLUSIVE: Strange World director Don Hall and co-director/writer Qui Nguyen talk about the theme of the film, LGBTQ+ representation and more

Walt Disney’s family adventure Strange World has finally graced big screens and just like any other Disney animated film, this one also teaches us a few lessons in a very subtle way. Directed by Don Hall, the action-packed comedy adventure Strange World introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob Splat, a three-legged dog Legend and a slew of other ravenous creatures. Strange World is co-directed by Qui Nguyen who also penned the screenplay.

As the film navigates through relationships between fathers and sons across three generations, it also attempts to talk from the perspective of environment and address the notion of ‘living harmoniously with nature.’ Don previously directed 2016 award-winning film Moana which also had a similar theme related to environmental concerns. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, the director shared his core reason behind such choice of features.

“I think environmental concerns to me are – it’s just the biggest question that we’re wrestling with in our lives,” Don said. “I just don’t think there’s any bigger question that faces humanity right now. So, it’s very much top of mind. When this movie started, my kids were little, they are a little older now but still that was just – as a parent, it’s very much top of mind like what world are my kids going to inherit.”

“What world did I inherit and what responsibility do I have as a parent to be a good ancestor, not just for my kids but generations to come,” he added. “To me, it’s just the biggest [concern] that we face right now.” As the film touched the topic of environmental concerns, it also subtly addressed the representation of LGBTQ+ while telling a generational story.

Talking about how important it was to seamlessly yet impactfully weave a forward-queer conversation between Jaeger (Dennis Quaid) and Ethan (Jaboukie Young-White) into the theme of this coming-of-age story, Don shared, “It’s very important to us as filmmakers and to, you know, tell stories with as much diversity and inclusion as possible. Our audience is everybody.”

“They are [the people] we want, to watch these films and we want our stories to be relatable to everybody and we were so thankful to be able to tell the story. And we so much love Ethan and can’t wait to share him with the world.” While Strange World does touch on some mature, progressive topics, it is indeed true to its name with such bizarre, quirky and stunning visuals that is definitely a feast for our eyes.

Speaking of the reason behind such choice of vibrant, trippy colors in the film, co-director Qui Nguyen commented, “Well, I think a big reason was we wanted to make sure that the top world felt different than our stranger world. Down below Avalonia had to have a very unique feel… When you went underground, you lost some of its colors that you’re used to seeing on the top world.”

“Blues, greens… the things that have been signified as beauty, suddenly you had to find a new relationship to color down below,” he added. “So, that’s why the colors were chosen [the way] they were. Also, it gets creative with these incredible color combinations and each environment had its own main color theme which also evolved as you got into the darker depths of the film.”

Produced by Roy Conli, Strange World features a star-studded voice cast of Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade; Dennis Quaid as Jaeger; Jaboukie Young-White as Ethan; Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal. The action-packed adventure from Walt Disney Animation Studios is now playing in theaters.

It was yet another eventful week for Bollywood’s biggest stars. From promoting their films with zeal to from being out and about in the city and getting dolled up for their television appearances, every diva made sure they shone like stars no matter what the event or occasion was. Although their fashion choices baffled us at times, but Bollywood’s leading ladies also delivered some of the chicest looks in statement-making ensembles, and we’re here for it! Take a look at our selections for the best and worst dressed celebrities this week.

HITS:

SONAM KAPOOR
Sonam Kapoor is unquestionably stylish. The actor’s fashion journals are both envious and drool-worthy. The actor enjoys sharing key fashion cues with her fans via excerpts from her fashion journals. Sonam gave us major winter outfit goals when she uploaded a tonne of photographs of herself a day ago. Sonam served as the inspiration for the fashion house Moschino and chose a winter outfit from its racks. Sonam was dressed in a black blouse with a turtleneck and some black formal pants. Her ochre long kilt with one thigh-high slit and the ochre trench coat she wore over it gave her look more of a wintery feel. Sonam completed her outfit with black Louis Vuitton and Nike boots, a gold bracelet, gold hoops for her earrings, and a Rolex watch. Sonam kept her hair neatly bunned and didn’t wear much makeup. She nailed the winter look with neutral eyeshadow, black eyeliner, mascara-coated eyelashes, contoured cheeks, and a neutral lipstick colour.

TAMANNAAH BHATIA
Tamannaah Bhatia has demonstrated several times that she is a real fashion icon. Whether it’s her festive attire or her gorgeous red-carpet appearances, Tamannaah Bhatia always wears the latesttrends. In a black statement saree gown from Manish Malhotra’s designer line, the actor brings the same sensibility to the Vogue Forces of Fashion event in Mumbai as he has for previous festive occasions. The actress donned a structured, embroidered saree with a pallu that resembled a veil and a tube corset top for a blouse. The traditional item was embellished with many little sparkling details that added glam to the spectacle. Tamannaah chose a set of statement rings and studded earrings as her accessories. She wore glitzy makeup with shimmery lids, contoured cheeks and glossy lips.

KRITI SANON
For the promotions of her upcoming film, Bhediya, nothing was different. The actress accessorised her monochrome striped co-ord ensemble with an oversized shirt from July Issue’s racks. Kriti’s striped accents provided a change of pace from the monochromatic outfits she has been sporting at recent occasions. Kriti wore a straight bandeau top with thin straps that was striped in black and white. She topped her top with a full-sleeved, baggy shirt with similar monochromatic striped pattern. Her outfit included a miniskirt with monochromatic stripes. Her three-piece outfit is for Rs. 20,000. The monochromatic outfit looked great with the chic, pointed black heels. She wore hoop earrings as jewellery. Her makeup featured cheek contouring, filled-in brows, and a hint of an earthy brown colour on the lips. She had her hair open and curled unevenly.

KIARA ADVANI
She chose a stylish leather outfit  from Versace and posed for an indoor photo-shoot. The actor chose a leather corset top from Versace with denim accents for the photo shoot. She is wearing a sleeveless top with a scoop neckline and V-shaped boning to highlight her form. It is made of denim with elasticized inserts, and the shoulder straps are embellished with Medusa hardware. Kiara continued to exude beauty. She also paired her top with a pair of bodycon-inspired black latex leggings. Her leggings exhibit Versace’s renowned sensual style. An elasticized waistline completes them. Versace’s eye-catching runway footwear, black satin heels with a double platform and a high block heel, completed her ensemble. Rhinestones and a distinctive Medusa charm embellish the ankle strap.

MISSES

SARA ALI KHAN
Although Pataudi Princess may serve as a source of inspiration for Gen Z in terms of style, she frequently fails to wow. This time, it was her red-and-black dress that gave us the willies. Sara uploaded a lot of photos to Instagram. This time, she wore a crimson high-waist skirt with a thigh-high slit and a black off-the-shoulder top. Sara’s form did not match the colour scheme, and the dress had an odd vibe. The appearance was made worse by braiding her hair and wearing black creeper heels.

SONAKSHI SINHA

The film’s producers arranged a special screening of it on Thursday in Mumbai, starring Kriti Sanon and Varun Dhawan. The red carpet was dazzling with a star-studded lineup that ranged from Janhvi Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Yami Gautam, and Shahid Kapoor to Rajkummar Rao, Zayed Khan, and many more. Sonakshi’s attire was unimpressive. However, denim clothing often looks simply fantastic on every occasion. Her baggy denim jeans and enormous denim jacket, however, fell short of expectations. It looked awful because of the red embroidery and tassels.
