Oppenheimer and Barbie pack a solid punch; two films collect Rs. 70 crores in opening weekend

The much-awaited Christopher Nolan directorial, Oppenheimer has set the box office on fire in India. According to estimates, the epic biopic has collected Rs. 18.50 crores on Sunday taking the 3-day total collection close to Rs. 50 crores. The weekend business would have been even more if India had more IMAX, as the big screen format faced capacity issues over the weekend.

There will be a big spillover of the weekend to the weekdays and the movie is headed for a big run at the India Box Office and might also enter the Rs. 100 crore club in India. The film is doing exceptional business in the multiplexes and with no competition in the coming weeks for this section of the audience, it is expected to show very good hold at the box office in the long run.

The romantic comedy, Barbie, has also scored big numbers on the opening weekend, more so due to the limited release size in India. As per estimates, the film has collected in the range of Rs. 18.50 crores in its opening weekend and will be targeting a lifetime collection of Rs. 35 crores.

This should be a hit result for a film like Barbie, which is essentially a female-led normal romantic comedy releasing with near NIL promotions in India. The film, much like Oppenheimer, is doing well on the strength of national multiplex chains and is expected to show good holds over the weekdays too.

Oppenheimer is the BIGGEST Hollywood opener in Inox Srinagar, Kashmir; has an outside chance of crossing the collections of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan

Bollywood Hungama has been at the forefront to report about the reopening of cinemas in Kashmir. The first multiplex in the beautiful state was opened on September 20, 2022. Two days earlier, on September 18, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated Multipurpose Cinema Halls, located in Pulwama and Shopian districts. RRR (2022) was the first film shown in Kashmir in these theatres and also the first film to be screened in Kashmir in three decades. Last week, we also reported on how Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan (2023) will be the first film to be screened at the newly opened theatres in Kashmir’s Baramulla and Handwara.

And now, Kashmir theatres are back in the news, thanks to Oppenheimer. The Christopher Nolan directorial is done beyond expectations across the country, and Inox Srinagar is no exception. It emerged as the biggest Hollywood opener and could possibly emerge as the highest Hollywood grosser in the state, beating other recent Hollywood biggies like Fast X (2023), John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (2023), Avatar: The Way Of Water (2022) etc.

Social media has been of the opinion that Oppenheimer is the first Hollywood film to get sold out in Inox Srinagar. However, Vikas Dhar, clarified, “Oppenheimer is the first Hollywood film to get such a massive response in our theatre. Avatar: The Way Of Water got sold out and so did a couple of other films. But to have such a sustained response and house full shows for three days is a first. For Avatar: The Way Of Water, we got a few enquiries before it was out. However, for Oppenheimer, we began to be flooded with enquiries four weeks before its release. The moviegoers asked us to release the film in our theatre on the same day as the rest of India.”

Looking at the response to Oppenheimer, exhibition sources feel that it won’t be a surprise if it manages to cross the collections of Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan in Inox Srinagar or come close to it.

Vikas Dhar reacted to these claims, “I don’t think so. I’ll be really surprised if it happens. Shah Rukh Khan’s fan following here is unparalleled. We are already getting enquiries for his next film, Jawan. Some of the comments we have got recently are, ‘I will come and see Oppenheimer but I am actually waiting for Jawan’!”

In Inox Srinagar, Oppenheimer is playing four shows a day in the English version and one show is of the dubbed Hindi version. Vikas Dhar continued, “Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy have such a hardcore fan following here. It is a lesson for us that even in Kashmir, people are following these artists. Our audiences have acquired an international taste. It’s quite fascinating.”

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer has collected nearly Rs. 30 crores in two days in India and has a shot at crossing the Rs. 100 crores mark.

Sunny Leone opens up about the reason of doing Bigg Boss; says it was for the ‘down payment’ of her new house

From facing backlash over her profession to making a name and brand of herself, Sunny Leone has established herself as a strong actress in the Indian entertainment industry. The Jism 2 star, who made her debut in the field with Bigg Boss, recently recalled her initial days in India and how she did the reality show to earn the down payment for their new purchase. In the same breath, the actress also opened up about meeting filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt but confessed that she didn’t know or understand his popularity in the country.

In an interview with Mid-Day, Sunny Leone revealed about the time she was approached for the popular reality show Bigg Boss and how she thought the money would help her in getting her dream home. She said, “I just thought that after I come home in a week or two, I can put a down payment on a house. I just got married, so we were looking forward to this idea of starting our life, and we were like, ‘Great, we’re gonna be able to buy a house or put a down payment on a house’. Then that was it, it was that simple.”

For the unversed, during her stint in the Bigg Boss house, it was visited by filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who was one of the guests on the show. He was impressed by Leone and went on to offer her the first Hindi film, Jism 2. Sunny, who hails from the US, confessed that she had no idea about Bhatt or his work. “At that moment, I didn’t think it was real, because I didn’t even know who he was. They just said this is so and so from the film industry, and everybody else was going bananas in the house. This whole buzz was happening, and I was like, ‘Okay, fine, great. I don’t know who he is but he is probably amazing’,” she added.

Interestingly, currently the director of Jism 2, Pooja Bhatt is in the Bigg Boss OTT house as one of the key contestants of the show.

Baipan Bhari Deva Box Office: Film collects Rs. 58.59 cr in three weeks; records higher collections in third week

The Marathi film Baipan Bhari Deva released a couple of weeks ago, and since then there has been no stopping it. Directed by Kedar Shinde the film which stars Deepa Parab, Shilpa Navalkar, Rohini Hattangadi, Vandana Gupte, Sukunya Kulkarni More and Suchitra Bandekar started off on a decent note with Rs. 1 cr coming in on day 1. Not surprisingly, with positive reviews and highly appreciative word of mouth Baipan Bhari Deva saw its collections grow exponentially over its opening weekend with Rs. 2.25 cr and Rs. 3.2 cr coming in on its first Saturday and Sunday respectively. In fact, Baipan Bhari Deva closed its opening weekend with a collection of Rs. 6.45 cr.

Following a stellar opening weekend, the business of the Marathi film continued to see collections remain over the Rs. 1 cr mark on weekdays. Thanks to the trend of collections hovering above the Rs. 1 cr mark, Baipan Bhari Deva saw a massive Rs. 12.5 cr coming in by the close of its first week. Interestingly, following its successful first week run, the business of the film saw even further growth over its second weekend with Rs. 13.69 cr coming in. This growth of nearly 112% in business from its opening weekend ensure that Baipan Bhari Deva enjoys an equally successful second week. In fact, based on its collections of Rs. 24.85 cr over its second week, the business of the film witnessed a 98.8% increase in collections from its first week running.

If that was not enough, Baipan Bhari Deva which faced competition from Bollywood and Hollywood films alike still managed to hold its own even in its third week. Despite newer big ticket releases hitting screens the Marathi film managed to draw in Rs. 21.24 cr in week three, which is a 69.92% increase in collections from its first week running.

Currently, Baipan Bhari Deva has collected Rs. 58.59 cr by the end of its third week. This stellar box office run has increased the prospects of the film. Though a slight dip in business has been recorded, trade predictions state that the business of Baipan Bhari Deva will continue to see further growth.

Baipan Bhari Deva Box Office Collections at a glance:

Week 1 – Rs. 12.5 cr.

Week 2 – Rs. 24.85 cr.

Week 3 – Rs. 21.24 cr.

Total – Rs. 58.59 cr.

Saira Banu reveals how Dilip Kumar proposed amid pouring rains

Ever since the demise of Dilip Kumar, Saira Banu, like many of her colleagues, has been taking to social media to share fond memories, anecdotes, about her personal and professional life. With the start of the monsoon showers, the actress recalled some of her fondest memories associated with monsoons and it seems that one of the most special days of her life had a close connection with the season. In a recent social media post, Saira Banu revealed that Dilip Kumar proposed to her amid rains.

Saira Banu took a trip down memory lane in her recent Instagram post. Sharing a photo of her late husband and legendary actor Dilip Kumar, Saira captioned about monsoons. In the post, she also opened up about her childhood days in London where rains were a frequent phenomenon. She said, “Rain rain go to Spain! As a 7 year old girl child schooling in London, we all chanted this line in chorus with my friends ceremoniously! Heaven knows why but this was so common with the erratic English weather… you never know when the sun shines and next the rain. This was the common chant with us kids.”

Further, she went on to talk about how monsoons were celebrated like a festival in Mumbai. “As for my family here back in Mumbai and later on as I wedded Dilip Sahib… we all loved the rain. The first shower was always a celebration and each one of us would rush to our garden terraces to soak up in the first downpour of the season and we would place huge drums of utensils to collect the pure pristine water! Now, I am told that there are concerns about drinking rainwater because new recent studies show that there are plastic contamination environmental pollutants and bacterial parasites in the water that can make you sick! Sahib loved the rain and if he was out of the house in a meeting and there would be a first shower…he would immediately call me with delight, ‘Saira it’s raining!’”

Recalling her proposal, Saira continued, “In fact, many years ago as we walked by Juhu Beach in the quiet of a wondrous night, there was a sudden shower of rain and he protectively took off his jacket and draped it around my shoulders… that was the magical night that we sat in his car and he asked me… ‘Will you marry me?’” She concluded by saying, “In later years, he happily bought a beautiful land at a hill station in Maharashtra… Sahib was always a farmer at heart, the proud son of a much respected Pathan fruit merchant in Peshawar. We would walk miles in the rain on the stony and green land geared up with our umbrellas dressed protectively in our mackintoshes, picking up shiny grazed pebbles and throwing them as far as we could in competition outdoing each other… of course, Sahib would always win… I always ran and collected these stones… and I still have and cherish each stone that he flew to the wind.”

Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar tied the knot on October 11, 1966 and the couple were together for over five decades. Dilip Kumar passed away on July 7 due to old age ailments and prolonged illness.

Ektaa R Kapoor engages in a fun banter with Karan Johar as they cross promote Dream Girl 2 with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani

Balaji Motion Pictures of Ektaa R Kapoor is gearing up for the release of the much-awaited sequel, Dream Girl 2, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Ananya Panday in the lead. After teasing the fans and the audiences with voiceover teasers featuring different stars, the makers have released another fun teaser where Ayushmann’s character, Pooja, is seen interacting with Ranveer Singh as Rocky. With the release date of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani nearing, it seems that the producers Ektaa and Karan Johar acted as cheer leaders for each other recently.

As a part of the celebrating the arrival of both films, producers Ektaa R Kapoor and Karan Johar have now gotten involved in a fun banter where they are also seen lauding each other’s upcoming prominent theatrical releases, Dream Girl 2 and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, respectively. The fun banter between them started when Karan Johar uploaded the Dream Girl 2 new teaser on his social media with a caption that says, “A prem kahaani in the alternate universe See you in cinemas Pooja!!! #DreamGirl #RockyAurRaniKiiPremKahaani”.

Continuing the conversation Karan Johar’s Dharma Production captioned, “Hold up, Rani wants to have a chat with you, Pooja!” Responding to it, Ektaa R Kapoor wishes Karan Johar’s upcoming theatrical release and wrote, “Pooja ke rocky aur mere karan @karanjohar ko best wishes for the blockbuster #rockyranikipremkahani” Ending the fun banter Karan Johar gave a sweet reply to Ektaa R Kapoor by saying, “Ektu you are the eternal dream girl”.

Dream Girl 2 is produced by Ektaa R Kapoor under her production house Balaji Motion Pictures and features an ensemble cast of Ayushmann Khurrana, Ananya Panday, Abhishek Banerjee, Manjot Singh, Paresh Rawal, and Annu Kapoor. The much-awaited sequel is ready to hit the big screen on August 25, 2023.

On the other hand, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani marks the return of the Gully Boy couple Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt on the big screen after four years. The film also stars Shabana Azmi, Dharmendra, and Jaya Bachchan in pivotal roles. It is slated for release on July 28.
