‘Star Wars’ Stormtroopers Are Now Enforcing Social Distancing at Disney World’s Shops

Social Distancig Stormtroopers in Place at Disney World

Even though Disney World in Orlando, Florida isn’t slated to reopen until July, the Disney Springs collection of shops and restaurants is back up and running. However, there are still social distancing policies in place, and in order to make sure guests adhere to the guidelines set by the Disney theme park locale, they’ve brought in First Order Stormtroopers to make sure people are keeping their distance from each other by way of some playful banter and crowd interaction.

Stormtropers Enforcing Social Distancing

Keeping a safe distance away from guests by standing atop a balcony, a male and a female Stormtrooper banter back and forth about their current job and also doing a little bickering about keeping their distance from each other.

The female Stormtrooper is not too happy with her current assignment since she’s usually working on Star Destroyers, guarding flight decks and whatnot. But they look down among the crowd, telling them to move along and comparing them to banthas, the hairy creatures that Tusken Raiders (AKA sand people) are known to ride. When the male Stormtrooper offers some fun facts about banthas, the female responds, “Yeah, I’m going to need you to move one male bantha’s length away, please.”

The bumbling nature of Stortmroopers is played up to as one of them tries to show the other how to be more authoritative. The male trooper says, “Hey, you! With the face covering!” That prompts the female trooper to chastise him by saying, “They all have face coverings.”The male responds, “Well, we made them all look,” and the female backs him up with, “And now they all know who’s in charge.”

The Stormtroopers also try out different renditions of saying, “Move along,” talk about finding a Resistance spy among the crowd, and say that the face coverings on guests might be nicer than the helmets they’re wearing.

It’s all in good fun, but one can’t help but think about the optics of this setup. Even though the banter between the Stormtroopers is lighthearted, they’re also part of an oppressive regime that is trying to control the galaxy. It’s like making a police state environment playful and fun. And considering everything that’s going on with our own police in the United States right now, maybe turning the galactic equivalent of cops into family friendly comedy bit isn’t the best idea right now. But Stormtroopers are already situated around Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge and playfully hassle guests from time to time, so this is probably something we’ll see more of when Disney World reopens next month.

Star Wars, Marvel, Disney And More Show Support For Black Lives Matter

The Walt Disney Company is usually deathly allergic to politics. No doubt they’ve concluded that supporting with one side means alienating the other, so their movies and TV shows generally put forward a soft inclusive liberalism without ever committing to a specific political position. At least, that’s the case in normal times.

But right now things are anything but normal. The country is currently facing mass civil unrest after the murder of George Floyd by killer cop Derek Chauvin. By now the world has seen the incredibly disturbing video of Chauvin with his knee on Floyd’s neck, squeezing the life out of the terrified man. This has quite rightly kicked off a wave of civil unrest across the country, drawing a line in the sand between those that would perpetuate racism and those that tacitly or overtly support it.

This has put Disney (and their subsidiary companies) in an awkward position, facing internal pressure from their employees and external pressure from their fans to take a stand. Now they’ve released a statement, tweeted simultaneously from the @StarWars, @MarvelStudios, @Pixar and @Disney accounts, and you can check it out down below.

Predictably, reactions have been mixed. While many have congratulated Disney for the message, some of quite reasonably pointed out that it’s still a very milquetoast message that makes no commitment to actually do anything. A particularly pointed response parodied typical corporate messaging on this, saying:

“We at [Brand] are committed to fighting injustice by posting images on Twitter that express our commitment to fighting injustice.

To that end, we offer this solemn white-on-black .jpeg that expresses vague solidarity with the Black community, but will quietly elide the specifics or what is wrong, what needs to change, or in what ways we will do anything about it. this is doubly true if [Brand] is particularly guilty of exacerbating these issues.

We hope this action encourages you to view [Brand] positively without, you know, expecting anything from us.â€Â

Let’s face it, nobody is expecting to see Mickey and Donald on the barricades throwing gas canisters back at cops, so I suppose messaging like this is the most we can hope for from major companies like the Mouse House. Fortunately, individuals associated with them – like Star Wars‘ John Boyega aren’t so shy. Boyega has spent the last few days signal-boosting videos of the cops trying to arrest a black FBI Agent they assumed was a criminal, guides to protesting safely and promoting British-based protests in support of the US movement. Good for him.

Stay safe out there!

DC Comics Rejigging Its Timeline Continuity Impacting Generation Zero To Generation Five Project & Reason For A Recent Cancellation? (Sans Spoilers)

DC Comics Rejigging Its Timeline Continuity Impacting Generation Zero To Generation Five Project and Reason For A Recent Cancellation? (Sans Spoilers)

On the weekend, we reported that DC Comics has cancelled its upcoming Manhunters: Lost History 5 issue mini-series.

This was a surprise since this mini-series was a spin-off from recent big DC event series Event Leviathan. A second spin-off Event Leviathan: Checkmate continues and is expected to include former Manhunter and current Leviathan Mark Shaw and current Manhunter Kate Spencer who is a member of Checkmate.

However, with Dan DiDio no longer with DC Comics and Jim Lee as the sole publisher, it seems likely that DC is working to recraft its previous timeline plans tied to the Generations project. DC Comics could have always done this series digitally and collected it afterwards if it had concerns about physical copy sales.

It was all also supposed to kick off in a big way with May 2020 FCBD 2020 and Generation Zero: Gods Among Us, but due to the pandemic that was not to be. Generation Zero, nor the other Generation one-shots, have been MIA from recent DC Comics solicitations. Stay tuned as we follow this developing story.

Trailer For an Interesting Indie Sci-Fi Thriller Titled VOLITION

We’ve got a trailer here for you to watch for an interesting looking indie sci-fi thriller titledVolition. The movie actually won the Best Feature award at the Philip K. Dick Film Festival last year.

The movie is described as a "tightly-wound puzzle of a ride," and a "mind-bending science-fiction thriller, where the line between fate and free-will blurs." This is the synopsis that was shared:

In this time-bending cerebral science-fiction thriller, a man named James Odin (Adrian Glynn McMorran) afflicted with clairvoyance tries to change his fate when a series of events leads to a vision of his own imminent murder.

The movie was directed by Tony Dean Smith (The Other Side of Being), and it stars Adrian Glynn McMorranMagda ApanowiczJohn CassiniFrank CassiniAleks Paunovic, and Bill Marchant. As you’ll see, there’s a lot going in the trailer, and it’s hard to make sense of what’s going on, but I’ll give it a shot.

Giant Pictures will release the film direct-to-VOD on July 10th.

Rick and Morty Season 5: Release Date & Story Details

Rick and Morty season 4 may be over, but thanks to an epic episode order from Adult Swim, fans can look forward to seeing season 5 and several more seasons beyond that. Created by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, the animated series follows the adventures of caustic genius scientist Rick Sanchez and his anxious grandson Morty Smith as they travel across the multiverse.

Season 4 was split into two halves of five episodes each, which saw Rick and Morty engage in a series of rapidly escalating heists, spend an uncomfortable amount of time in a vat of acid, and create and destroy a whole civilization in the space of a week. In other words, it was a fairly typical season.

Given the show'saddictive blend of extremely dark humor and high-concept science fiction, Rick and Morty fans will understandably be keen to see the duo (and sometimes Summer, and occasionally Beth, but never Jerry) return for more adventures. Here's what we know so far about what to expect from Rick and Morty season 5.

In a stunning and welcome move, Adult Swim gave the green light for an additional 70 episodes of Rick and Morty after season 3, which means that Harmon and Roiland are still clear for another 60 episodes. Assuming that each upcoming season is ten episodes long, like the past three seasons have been, that means that Rick and Morty has been renewed up to season 10. Needless to say, it will be a while before fans have to worry about the security of the show's future.

Less certain than Rick and Morty's future is season 5's premiere date. The show's release schedule has so far been rather sporadic and subject to long hiatuses. Rick and Morty's creators said in 2018 that from season 4 onwards there will no longer be any long breaks between seasons, but it remains to be seen how the show's production will be impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Animation is easier to continue under lockdown than filming a live-action show, from a logistical standpoint, but working remotely could still slow things down. Optimistically, we can look forward to Rick and Morty season 5 premiering in late 2020.

Rick and Morty season 4 wrapped up with the reveal that Rick had indeed cloned Beth, and sent one of the Beths off into space to become an adventurer. Unfortunately, since Rick randomized which version of Beth went into space, there's no way of knowing which one of them is the clone. The two Beths do manage to reconcile at the end of the episode, and it looks like Space Beth will be sticking around for season 5. Meanwhile, Phoenixperson also returned and is currently stashed in pieces in Rick's workshop.

Each season of Rick and Morty typically saves ongoing storylines for the first and/or last episode, with standalone adventures in between. Season 4's ending has certainly shifted the status quo a little with the return of Space Beth, but not quite as much as Rick getting thrown in prison like he did at the end of season 2. Rick and Morty season 5 will likely jump right back into random adventures - and perhaps even bring back another long-missing character: Evil Morty.
