It looks liked the coronavirus pandemic is finally slowing down, which means the world can resume its previously scheduled programming in a short while. Actually, much sooner than that. According to The Hollywood Reporter, California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed that all film and TV production can recommence on June 12.

“Music, TV and film production may resume in California, recommended no sooner than June 12, 2020, and subject to approval by county public health officers within the jurisdictions of operations following their review of local epidemiological data including cases per 100,000 population, rate of test positivity, and local preparedness to support a health care surge, vulnerable populations, contact tracing and testing,†the California Department of Public Health said in a statement via the Governor’s Office on Friday. “To reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, productions, cast, crew and other industry workers should abide by safety protocols agreed by labor and management, which may be further enhanced by county public health officers. Back office staff and management should adhere to Office Workspace guidelines published by the California Department of Public Health and the California Department of Industrial Relations, to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.â€

Per the article, the Industry-Wide Labor-management Safety Committee Task Force, which includes the likes of AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA, the Directors Guild, IATSE and the Teamsters, submitted a 22-page document to state governments across the country with recommended protocols for “how to restart production while minimizing the risk of spreading COVID-19.â€

These protocols weren’t made known in the report, though an example from Tyler Perry’s Atlanta studios was mentioned — the cast of Perry’s TV shows Sistas and The Oval would be tested for the virus with nasal swabs before arriving on set, self-isolate for 16 days, travel on private jets and undergo more testing when they arrive in Atlanta.

Zack Snyder Says Ray Fisher is “the Heart” of his Justice League

Zack Snyder Says Ray Fisher is “the Heart” of his Justice League

Are you ready for more Cyborg? Because Zack Snyder is! In a recent post on Twitter, the Justice League director responded to one of Ray Fisher’s tweets with a simple sentence: “You Ray, are the heart of my movie.” Check out the full tweet below.

Snyder was, of course, addressing Fisher’s post in which the actor stated, “I don’t praise Chris Terrio and @ZackSnyder for simply putting me in Justice League.I praise them for EMPOWERING me (a black man with no film credits to his name) with a seat at the creative table and input on the framing of the Stones before there was even a script!â€

In the build up to the theatrical release of Justice League, numerous sequences featuring Ray Fisher’s Cyborg were unveiled. Some showed him playing football in Snyder’s patented super slow-mo style; others had the character flying through the sky brandishing a mask; and others still featured our robotic hero wandering through the past. Yet, despite claims that Fisher would serve as the central heart to the story, the theatrical cut greatly diminished his role and left fans wanting a lot more.

It sure sounds like Snyder plans to reinstate Cyborg’s mantle as the heart and soul of the picture, in which the hero learns to harness his power for good. Now, can we please just fast forward to 2021 already?!

Zack Snyder’s Justice League will reportedly cost around $20-30 million in order to properly finish the editing and visual effects of the director’s original vision. The original post-production crew is also expected to return along with the cast members to record additional dialogue for the cut. No new footage will be shot, however.

Fueled by the hero’s restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Justice League sees Bruce Wayne enlist the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League, which features a screenplay from Chris Terrio from a story by Snyder and Terrio, stars Affleck as Batman, Cavill as Superman, Gadot as Wonder Woman, Momoa as Aquaman, Miller as The Flash, Fisher as Cyborg, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, with J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Released in November 2017, the film earned mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, praising the action and performances from Gadot and Miller while criticizing every other aspect of the film, namely the inconsistent tone that many fault Joss Whedon (The Avengers) for after taking over directorial duties from Snyder. With a large budget of $300 million and a break-even point of $750 million, the film is considered a box office bomb having grossed only $658 million.

You Ray, are the heart of my movie. @ray8fisher https://t.co/cZ64Vlg50V

The Morning Watch: Creating Burn Wounds for Movies & TV, Revolutionizing ‘Little Women’ & More

How to Make Burn Wounds for Movies

The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.

In this edition, find out how burn wounds are created by make-up effects artists for movies and TV shows. Plus, watch a video essay focusing on how director Greta Gerwig revolutionized the classic story of Little Women to make it feel fresh again. And finally, listen as Anna Kendrick breaks down her career, starting with early roles in Camp and Rocket Science and taking us up through this year’s Trolls World Tour.

First up, special make-up effects artist Ben Bornstein spoke with Insider about the process of creating burn wounds for movies and TV shows. With experience on films like The Departed and The Fighter, as well as TV shows such as Gotham and Blindspot, Bornstein is an expert on special make-up effects, and here you can see his expertise with extensive prosthetic pieces on the face, body and even the eyes.

Next up, Patrick (H) Willems delivers a new video essay, this time focusing on director Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed adaptation of Little Women. The filmmaker restructures the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott to create two parallel timelines going back and forth in time, and this video essay shows how that makes the story that much more powerful.

Finally, right now you can catch Anna Kendrick in the new HBO Max series Love Life, so Vanity Fair wanted the actress to take a look back at the start of her career with Camp in 2003 and Rocket Science in 2007. Then they make stops at big movies like The Twilight Saga, Up in the Air, 50/50, Pitch Perfect, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Trolls, A Simple Favor, and more.

Days of the Bagnold Summer

Days of the Bagnold Summer (2019)

This is a winning feature debut from actor Simon Bird, best known as the short speccy one from UK TV sitcom The In-Betweeners. He marshals the gentle comic currents of a wistful English summer break in which divorced mother and depressed son are thrown together, offering a vast range of excruciating character details but little in the way of a satisfying story arc.

We meander in at the point in which perma-glum wannabe hair-mettler Daniel (Earl Cave) and his divorced, fussbudget mother Sue (Monica Dolan) are shoe shopping ahead of a wedding – the experience proves to be predictably futile and awkward.

Monosyllabic Daniel is able to raise a small trace of a half smile at the prospect of visiting his Flash Harry father in Florida to meet his new wife and even drive in his new sports car. Yet his unreliable pops blows him out, sentencing him to a summer of searching for jobs, eating bread, walking the dog, listening to Metallica and clapping-back at his mother’s softly-spoken requests for basic civility.

The film is based on a 2012 graphic novel by Joff Winterhart, and Bird’s way with composition and choreography certainly retains the bold simplicity of that primal mode of visual storytelling. Cave and Dolan both commit fully to their characters, and moments of bitter, incisive humour often derive from the sheer banality of their interactions, such as Sue letting Daniel know he can have a beer when they’re eating out, or offering to make him a sandwich as her key gesture of material love.

Some of the more overtly sitcom-ish side characters, such as Tim Key’s gobby fudge maker or Rob Brydon’s school teacher lothario, push the comedy of humiliation a little too far, and the sense of discomfort (that being shy is the butt of an easy joke) often feels a tad contrived. All the base elements are there, but the reason this one falls short of greatness is down to a disappointing and predictable final act that is more like a desperate reach for a happy ending than an honest outcome to this fraught situation.

The film’s moral – that depression is superficial and there are easy fixes for any emotional strain – is pat and underdeveloped, an attempt to swiftly round out the material rather than offer a convincing reason as to why it was worth spending time in the company of these characters.
