Masaba Gupta is back with another season of Masaba Masaba, and it’s looking good

Call it a guilty pleasure. But I quite liked the first season of Masaba Masaba, primarily because Neena Gupta and Masaba Gupta were so convincing as mother and daughter. I wonder why!

Masaba Gupta is back with another season of Masaba Masaba, and it’s looking good

They are back doing what they are best at: squabbling with one another over Masaba’s hormonal levels. This time the trailer indicates that the senior Gupta is also on a sexual rampage. We clearly see Ram Kapur giving Ms Gupta bed roomy looks. It all looks very sexed-up and mischievous.

Masaba’s love interest is the Kiwi actor Aramaan Khera whom I remember seeing in something called Taish. In Masaba Masaba the young actors seem happy about letting the two Guptas take centre stage. Sometimes it good to just lie back and enjoy being the focus of the female gaze.

Masaba Gupta says she is happy to be back with another season of her self-projected series. “It was so surreal to be filming Season 2, given the pandemic and all the things that have happened since season 1. It was special because this season has so many different tracks. It’s not just about my mom and I reclaiming our lives, it’s also about all these people around us coming into their own. Season 2 touched my heart in so many ways – it made me laugh, it made me cry and it made me feel warm on the inside and I hope it does exactly that to all the people who get to see this on Netflix on the 29th of July!”

28 Years of Mohra EXCLUSIVE: “It was a risky film with new faces; I thought Suniel Shetty and Akshay Kumar fit the part” – Rajiv Rai

A discussion on the 90s era of Bollywood will be incomplete without the mention of Rajiv Rai. The expert filmmaker delivered two of the finest films of that decade, Mohra (1994) and Gupt (1997), and both are remembered for their plot, performances and of course the soundtrack. Both films recently had their respective anniversaries. While Mohra completed 28 years on July 1, Gupt celebrated 25 years on July 4.

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Rajiv Rai about these movies. The filmmaker poured his heart out as he spoke in-depth about these films and much more.

Before Mohra, Rajiv Rai had directed Yudh (1985), Tridev (1989) and Vishwatma (1992), all of which starred big stars of that time. In Mohra, he cast Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty, who were relatively new. When asked what made him do so, he replied, “There was no calculation. I just went with the flow.”

However, he admitted that “It was a risky film with new faces,” and added, “I thought Suniel and Akshay fit the part. We also had Divya Bharti who unfortunately passed away. We introduced her in Vishwatma. She was keen to do the film but things didn’t work. Then, Raveena Tandon was signed for the film.”

Rajiv Rai said that he is fortunate that he hasn’t faced challenges while getting the casting right. He said, “The only time I got stuck in casting was during Tridev for the role played by Naseeruddin Shah. I wanted three big, popular names for the male cast. I was looking for someone who would add a little bit of a surprise and make the film look different from the usual Bollywood films. I knew Naseer was an excellent actor. So, I took a chance to see whether or not he is interested in doing the role.” Naseeruddin Shah, however, agreed to come on board immediately. The veteran actor was then also seen in Rajiv’s VishwatmaMohra and Asambhav (2004).

Rajiv Rai elaborated on his style of working and why music is paramount in his films, “For me, the subject is important and so is the music as it’s a part of the subject and entertainment. Songs were an integral part in those days, which they are not in today’s times. You have to tell your story through the songs, and you have to make sure your song is a hit. Otherwise, everybody will go out for a break during songs!”

He added, “Honestly, it’s never been about the money. I believe the reason I was kind of successful is that I never put money before the film. I always put the film before anything. My father (prominent producer Gulshan Rai) taught me very well, ‘Don’t chase money, money will chase you. Make a good film. Don’t worry about how much you’re spending. Make sure that the film works. The rest will follow.’ So, I’ve always concentrated very hard on the screenplay, editing, action, music etc.”

Rajiv Rai spoke highly of Viju Shah, who has composed music in almost all his films, “Viju Shah was my backbone, my right-hand man! I could get my music out of him. He could give me the music that I wanted. He knows exactly what I want.”

Meanwhile, Rajiv Rai had a great time celebrating the 25th anniversary of Gupt with a special screening of the film, held by Radio Nasha, in Mumbai. The star cast – Bobby Deol and Kajol – along with Viju Shah and other actors and crew members attended this occasion, which was held on July 9.

Talking about this celebration and about him having to leave India immediately after Gupt’s release, he said, “I left the country in 1997. The whole universe knows about it. I don’t want to get into details. Since I was not here, I couldn’t enjoy the kind of success I could have. But I am enjoying it now. I didn’t enjoy it then. Maybe the light above saw that he didn’t enjoy it and thought that he deserved to enjoy it. So, if I can enjoy it after 25 years, I feel it’s never too late! I feel very happy that people have recognized 25 years of Gupt. I am very grateful to the cast and crew who worked with me, and my audiences who saw the film and loved it.”

The USP of Gupt was that no one was able to guess who the killer would be. The shocker worked to the advantage of the film. Rajiv exulted, “That is what I worked very hard on. I knew that the audience was guessing. I wanted to know if I could get them to guess wrong and win them over with my suspense. It’s a test I passed back then. Will I pass my next test? I don’t know (laughs)!”

Bollywood Hungama recently broke the news that he’s making his next film, 18 years after his last film Asambhav was released in theatres. So, what’s his next film all about? Rajiv Rai replied, “It is a suspense film, a murder mystery. It has 0% similarities to Gupt, though. You have to guess the murderer. I have been writing it for 4-5 years. In 2016, I decided to make this film as I was bored and was not doing the work I was supposed to do.”

He continued, “This film is giving me immense happiness because, for the first time, I am not stressed about the budget. The USP of my film is that it doesn’t have much of a budget. Every film of mine had a budget. I wondered what it is that I have not done? So, I have not made a film like a man next door who has no money in his pocket and yet makes a hit film. I asked myself, can I do that? And the answer is, why not? That’s the challenge for me in this film. I have not tried to cut corners on the budget. The subject I have written doesn’t require much (of a budget). I make films for the audiences, and I don’t want them to say that I have compromised.”

However, he clarified, “It’s an experimental film and it’s also going to be an artistic film. But it’s not going to be an art cinema. I am making it as commercial as it gets. It’s a film which will look and feel like a Rajiv Rai film!”

“Should I suffocate myself to death? Does a person’s worth become known only after their demise?” questions Neetu Chandra

For the last couple of days, Bollywood Hungama has been reporting about Nitu Chandra’s dilemma. The actress who has over the years worked with no less than 13 National award winning filmmakers, and has recently featured in a Hollywood film in a lead role, has been facing a drought when it comes to getting work back home. Recently in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Neetu Chandra narrated her heart wrenching story of how she has been running pillar to post to find roles.

“Should I suffocate myself to death? Does a person’s worth become known only after their demise?” questions Neetu Chandra

In the course of the conversation, when talking about her struggle, Neetu touched on the topic of suicide and why so many people who are struggling find it as an easy escape. Speaking about it she says, “Maybe my confidence was intimidating to a lot of people, but such people are looked up to today. Starting from Smita Patil ji, to Shabana Azmi ji, they have not made their name and fame by doing song and dance sequences.  They made it big thanks to their performances. I have done a stage performance of Umrao Jaan, where I have played the role from youth to old age. For two hours I have been on stage for it, and the show was backed by big names. So how do you expect me, who has done performances like this to just give it up and do song and dance sequences? I don’t have a problem doing it, I will do it and I have done it in the past. But today, I am just looking for good work… and life has become such a struggle. I connect with these actors who have been fighting at every level. My mother has been my support. Today I am alive just because I live with my family. Even if you are doing a song, you have to come from a certain background – that is when the stage is set, the supporting members in the song are selected, the music, the marketing budget, and promotions are all decided accordingly. And in case the song isn’t great and the audience don’t like it, it will be played so often that people start liking it eventually. I never got all this, despite being part of three national award winning films.”

Continuing further Neetu asked, “So now tell me what is someone like me supposed to do. Should I suffocate myself to death? Does a person’s worth become known only after their demise? Like what Sushant (Singh Rajput) did, there are so many people who are going through the same thing. This same thought has crossed my mind as well. Being a girl, fighting in a male dominated society, and industry… I have been fighting; I don’t want to give up. People say, you are very strong, but being strong does not pay my bills. Everyone needs work and money, from the lowest level to the top most everyone wants the same thing. Work and payment.”

Concluding describing her ordeal, Neetu pointed out the duality of the society we live in today. Citing examples where people say that an individual needs to speak up when facing issues, while at the same time denouncing those who do actually stand up to talk. “Now with me saying this today there are people who are going to say, Neetu spoke about this to gain sympathy, she was only doing this for PR’, and if I don’t speak these same people will say, ‘she should have spoken out’. so where should actors like me who are fighting for work go?”

Ranbir Kapoor reveals he discussed his marriage with father Rishi Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor is currently gearing up for his next release Shamshera. The actor was recently in conversation with ETimes where he spoke about his marriage with Alia Bhatt. While the couple tied the knot earlier this year on April 14 in a private and intimate ceremony, one person that was missing was the actor’s father the late Rishi Kapoor. In the interview, when asked whether he had discussed his marriage with his father, Ranbir revealed that he had in fact done so.

Revealing details of his conversation with his father the late Rishi Kapoor, Ranbir revealed that the veteran actor wanted him to get married soon. Especially after Rishi Kapoor took ill, Ranbir says that he and Alia spent quite a bit of time with Rishi Kapoor in the hospital. During this time, Rishi would always ask ‘Why are you all wasting your time? You guys have no work? Go and get married… why are you sitting in the hospital’. If that wasn’t all, remembering his late father, Ranbir claims that it would have been amazing if Rishi Kapoor was alive and present for their wedding.

Back on the work front, Ranbir Kapoor will next be seen in the Yash Raj Films venture Shamshera. Directed by Karan Malhotra the film also features Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor. Post this the actor also has the Ayan Mukerji directorial Brahmastra which features him alongside Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy, and Nagarjuna Akkineni. Ranbir Kapoor pulls off Kalaripayattu inspired fight sequence in Shamshera

Ranbir Kapoor is playing a larger-than-life quintessential Hindi film hero with the action entertainer Shamshera. Ranbir, who is coming to the big screen four years after he delivered the blockbuster Sanju, is pitted against Sanjay Dutt who is playing an evil, merciless, cold-hearted brute force of nature, Shuddh Singh. Sanjay Dutt vs Ranbir Kapoor is the clash of the year on the big screen and Ranbir will be seen pulling off many visually stunning action set pieces in Shamshera! One such is a Kalaripayattu-inspired edgy fight sequence which has been directed by Franz Spilhaus, who has previously choreographed films like the Denzel Washington starrer Safe House and Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff’s blockbuster WAR.

Kalaripayattu is a martial art designed for the ancient battlefield (the word Kalari meaning battlefield), with weapons and combative techniques that are unique to India. In this scene, Ranbir fights an army general with a long, deadly wooden log as their choice of weapon.

Director Karan Malhotra explains, “Shamshera is a film that is extremely rooted to India and its culture and traditions. Being set in the 1800’s it was important that action set pieces also look from that era and are mounted at a visual scale like never before. We wanted audiences to see something new and we have tried to achieve this. Ranbir is playing the Hindi film hero and he has to pull off incredible action scenes. One such scene required him to pull off a Kalaripayattu inspired fight sequence that we shot on a really dusty field and constructed an arena that resembled the arena of those times!”

Karan adds, “As an actor, Ranbir jumps at anything new! So, when we explained the scene to him, he wanted to ace it and I remember he put in many, many days rehearsing the scene with the action director of this sequence, Franz and his team. This scene is filmed on Balli, who has to fight the army general, at a hugely critical juncture of the film. It was a challenging shoot sequence. It was hot, it was humid and it was really really dusty. To make matters worse, it was also windy. But hats off to Ranbir for pulling this off with elan. This is one of the biggest highlight points of the film and I hope people love it.”

The story of Shamshera is set in the fictitious city of Kaza, where a warrior tribe is imprisoned, enslaved and tortured by a ruthless authoritarian general Shuddh Singh. This is the story of a man who became a slave, a slave who became a leader and then a legend for his tribe. He relentlessly fights for his tribe’s freedom and dignity. His name is Shamshera.

The high-octane, adrenaline-pumping entertainer is set in the 1800s in the heartland of India. It has the big promise of a never seen before Ranbir Kapoor, who plays Shamshera in the film! Sanjay Dutt plays Ranbir’s arch-enemy in this huge casting coup and his showdown with Ranbir will be something to watch out for as they will ferociously go after each other with no mercy.

Directed by Karan Malhotra, this action extravaganza has been produced by Aditya Chopra and is set to release in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu on July 22, 2022.

Jacqueline Fernandez recreates Cindy Crawford’s 1992 advert for Pepsi; internet goes bonkers over it

Back in 1992, model Cindy Crawford featured a Pepsi commercial that made waves. The advertisement featured the model arriving at a local gas station and alighting from a vehicle. Clad in a simple white top and denim the girl walks up to a Pepsi vending machine to quench her thirst. This happens while two youths are seen enraptured by the visual before them. Now years after the release of this commercial, Jacqueline Fernandez has recreated the advert for the brand.

Sharing the video of the new advert along with a few images from the shoot Jacqueline took to Instagram adding, “Pepsi black = Max Taste, Zero Sugar ???????? Go try it! @pepsiindia #pepsiblack #ad”

Also sharing the advert, filmmaker Karan Johar too shared the video saying, “Can’t take my eyes off this new PEPSI BLACK AD!!! This is going to be my go to drink because it has MAX TASTE With ZERO SUGAR!”

Interestingly, the recreated advertisement follows the same lines as 1992 one featuring Cindy Crawford. Looking at Jackie in the new advert we have to say she has done a pretty commendable job of living up to Crawford. Have a look at the Cindy Crawford ad here:

Interestingly, just last year Crawford had recreated the same ad for a Nobel cause. Sharing details on her Instagram of  the same Cindy added, “We returned back to the original Halfway House from  the famous @pepsi commercial I did in 1992 to recreate the moment (with a David Yarrow twist) in hopes of raising funds for the American Family Children’s Hospital”.
