Superman: Legacy, standalone Batman without Robert Pattinson, Supergirl movies, and Wonder Woman series – James Gunn announces 10 new DC projects under his leadership

Under the new leadership of James Gunn and Peter Saffran, DC Universe is undergoing a change. On Tuesday, Gunn announced 10 new projects that are in the works including a new Superman movie sans Henry Cavill set for 2025, a standalone Batman movie which will be set apart from Robert Pattinson starrer, a Supergirl movie and several series including one prequel on Wonder Woman.

The Superman movie written by James Gunn is officially titled Superman: Legacy, a movie on Batman and Robin, and a Green Lantern mystery series. “DC Studios is unprecedented,” Safran said, as per Variety. “It is a standalone production entity and studio. It is the first time ever that everything DC related — film, television, live-action, animation, gaming — is all centralized under one creative vision, that of James and myself.”

Superman: Legacy is set to open in theatres on July 11, 2025, and will mark the start of the DCU. It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing,” Safran said. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.”

“Superman is for everyone,” Gunn said. “That’s a four-quadrant film that should speak to everyone worldwide.” Interestingly, a separate Superman is also being produced by J.J. Abrams and written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, which is definitely in development and will exist outside of DC Universe.

The Gunn-written film will directly lead into The Authority which will be an ensemble movie about superhumans. He said this is a project he’s “really excited” to bring to life. As per the report, “The characters come from Wildstorm, which was launched in 1992 as an independent entity under current DC Comics chief Jim Lee and ultimately made an imprint of DC. The Wildstorm characters were later folded into the main DC comics universe when the company rebooted its continuity with the New 52 initiative in 2011.”

“It isn’t just a story of heroes and villains, and not every movie and TV show is going to be about good guy versus bad guy,” Gunn said. “There are very questionable people, like the Authority, who basically believe that you can’t fix the world in an easy manner, and they take things into their own hands.”

Added Safran, “They’re kind of like Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men. They know that you want them on the wall, or at least they believe that.”

Another movie announces is The Brave and the Bold which is the new version of Batman in the DCU world, separate from Pattinson’s version. It will introduce the Bat-family. Robin will be a part of it: Damian Wayne. At the press meet, Gunn described Wayne Jr. as “our favorite Robin,” “a little son of a bitch,” an “assassin” and a “murderer.”

“It’s a very strange sort of father-son story about the two of them,” Gunn said. Damian Wayne is the son of Bruce Wayne who isn’t aware of his existence for the first ten years.

Next up will be Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is based on King’s comics run of the same title from 2021 and 2022, featuring Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El. “We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life,” James Gunn said.

Apart from these projects, Swamp Things, TV animated series Creature Commandos focused on “Frankenstein’s monster teaming up with a werewolf, a vampire and a gorgon to fight Nazis in World War II”, Waller, Lanterns, Wonder Woman prequel Paradise Lost, Booster Gold have been announced.

Meanwhile, four DC Titles to release in 2023 include Shazam! Fury of the Gods starring Zachary Levi on March 17, The Flash starring Ezra Miller on June 16, Blue Beetle starring Xolo Maridueña on August 18 and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom starring Jason Momoa on December 21.

Anurag Kashyap gives credits to Shah Rukh Khan for bringing revolution in Hindi cinema; says, “Shah Rukh Khan ki Pathaan ke liye, aaj kranti ho rahi hai”

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan makes a stunning comeback to the big screen in the lead role with the release of Pathaan on January 25, 2023. Since its launch on January 25, the film’s box office earnings have crossed 200 crores. The film has ignited a huge global popularity. Everyone, including Bollywood fans, celebrities, and directors, is hailing the performer for his action-packed performance.

When asked if, in addition to love, movies can promote a “kranti” (revolution) in the nation, to which Anurag replied to Hindustan Times, “Filmon se hamesh hi aati hai. Aaj kranti ho rahi hai cinema halls mein, Shah Rukh Khan ki Pathaan ke liye, aaj kranti ho rahi hai (Films have also fanned revolution. Anurag had lauded Shah Rukh Khan earlier too when he first saw Pathaan. He told reporters, “Shah Rukh Khan itna haseen, itna sundar pehle kabhi laga nahi. Toh hum toh usko dekhne aaye the aur dil khush ho gaya. Aur itna khatarnak action hai, Shah Rukh ke liye pehli baar aisa role hai. Mujhe nahi lagta unhone is tarah ka action pehle kiya hai. When asked if it is different from other romantic films of Shah Rukh Khan, Anurag said, “Ye us tarah ki film nahi hai. Ye bilkul alag film hai. Ye War aur Tiger us zone ki film hai. Shah Rukh ko is tarah ki film karte hue pehli baar dekha. Par kya body banaya hai unhone, khatarnaak banayi hai.”

On the work front, Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan has just released and has proved to be a massive success. It has become a must watch theatrical entertainer which is being celebrated across the nation. The film is part of Aditya Chopra’s ambitious spy universe and has the biggest superstars of the country Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham in it. The actor has Atlee Kumar’s Jawan releasing in June 2023 and Rajkumar Hirani’s next Dunki scheduled for December 2023.

On the other end, with projects like Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat starring Vicky Kaushal, Alaya F, and Karan Mehta, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap will also have a busy year. The film is slated to hit theatres on February 3.

Pathaan: Siddharth Anand says Shah Rukh Khan’s inaccessibility created thirst amongst people: ‘That’s what created this mass hysteria’

Siddharth Anand, with War and now Pathaan, has become the undisputed number one director of his genre in India. While War with Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff & Vaani Kapoor collected Rs. 477 crore gross worldwide, with Pathaan starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone & John Abraham, Siddharth has outdone himself as the film in just 6 days has already collected Rs. 591 crore gross worldwide! Speaking of the massive success of the film, the filmmaker said that the inaccessibility of Shah Rukh Khan created curiosity.

Khan made his return to big screen after a gap of four years though he had cameos in Laal Singh Chaddha and Brahmastra last year. It’s once in a lifetime we get these kind of numbers going, but to have hit it again in my next film, and then hit it for four days and after that on the weekend, it’s a feeling I can’t even describe. It’s unreal, I just feel sometimes I am dreaming,” the director said.

Speaking of how boycott calls were made due to saffron swimsuit work by Deepika Padukone in ‘Besharam Rang’ song, he said, “The film has spoken and the film’s intentions have spoken. And the fact that it had nothing offensive, it’s such a patriotic film that it does inspire you. That’s reached the audience – the audience is too smart to get fooled by fake boycott calls.”

Siddharth Anand is the only Hindi film director to have delivered five Rs. 50+ crore nett box office days and also five Rs. 100+ crore worldwide gross box office days with War and Pathaan, with the SRK starrer delivering 4 out of 5!

Netflix to celebrate Yash Chopra’s legacy through the docu-series The Romantics

Streaming giant Netflix is all set to celebrate the late legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra and his banner Yash Raj Films through the docu-series titled The Romantics. Directed by Smriti Mundhra, the show will be released on the Valentine’s Day on February 14 and it will be Netflix’s tribute to Chopra, who was known as ‘Father of Romance.’

Throwing more light on The Romantics, an official statement from the makers said, “The star-studded, four-part docu-series will feature 35 leading voices of the Hindi film industry and dive into the history of Bollywood through the lens of YRF’s impact in making Bollywood a household name globally. The global streaming giant will release the trailer of the docu-series in 190 countries tomorrow. It will also subtitle the trailer in 32+ world languages, given the reach of Bollywood across the world and the impact that YRF has had in shaping the equity of Hindi film industry worldwide for 50+ years.”

Speaking about the achievements of Yash Chopra, Monika Shergill, VP, Content, Netflix India, added, “Fondly remembered as The King of Romance, Yash Chopra’s films brought in a new wave of emotion, individualism and cultural change to Hindi cinema and helped turn one of the biggest film industries in the world into what it is today. This will be yet another Netflix show for Smriti Mundhra after Indian Matchmaking and Never Have I Ever.

Yash Chopra started his career with a bang with Dhool Ka Phool in 1959. In a career over 50 years, he became known for some iconic romantic films like Silsila, Lamhe, Kabhi Kabhie, Chandni, Dil To Pagal Hai, Veer-Zaara, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, etc.

Yash Raj Films is currently basking in the super success of their latest flick Pathaan, which stars Shah Rukh Khan, John Abraham and Deepika Padukone in pivotal roles.
