The Romantics: Yash Chopra talks about the STRUGGLES he faced while releasing Chandni: “One distributor refused to release the film. A lot of messages were passed that ‘Another flop is coming. Don’t give them theatres”

The Romantics, a series on the history of Yash Raj Films (YRF) and which looks at the memorable films made by Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra, was released today on Netflix. The first episode throws light on the tough times faced by YRF before the release of Chandni (1989) and brings forth some not-so-known and fascinating trivia.

The Romantics Yash Chopra talks about the STRUGGLES he faced while releasing Chandni “One distributor refused to release the film. A lot of messages were passed that 'Another flop is coming. Don't give them theatres”

The 80s was a time when action films were in vogue. Yash Chopra’s Silsila (1981) had underperformed and so did Faasle (1985). To fit in, Yash Chopra made a multi-starrer film, Vijay (1988). Anil Kapoor, who was in the film, can be heard saying in the series, “It was like a rehash of all his old films. He said ‘Let me make a very hardcore commercial film, with song, dance, a little bit of sex thrown here and there, bikini shots and conflict scenes.” He added, “During the making of the film, I could feel that he was creatively enjoying the process. Even I didn’t enjoy it. I think none of us were enjoying the process.”

An old interview of Yash Chopra with Karan Johar is played at this point in The Romantics wherein he stated, “I made a very calculated commercial decision. I can’t say this film was from my heart”. He also said that when he was making Vijay, he asked himself, “What am I doing? Where has the softness inside me gone?”

As luck would have it, Vijay also bombed. Yash Chopra then said, “Our industry had reached a saturation point of violence. I said, ‘Okay, I’ll do the biggest gamble of my life. Whatever happens, I won’t make a film with a formula. I’ll make a film which touches my heart.” Thus was born Chandni.

Rishi Kapoor revealed that he was approached to do the film when he was working on Vijay. The master filmmaker admitted that though he had not seen Sridevi’s work, he decided to cast her after Amitabh Bachchan showed him her Tamil film, Moondram Pirai (1982).

At this point, Anil Kapoor opened up that since Yash Chopra was feeling quite low due to back-to-back flops, he asked Boney Kapoor to help him cast Sridevi. Boney flew to Chennai and got the work done. Anil remarked, “It didn’t matter to (Sridevi’s mother) who is Yash Chopra, who has made such great films. It was just the money, you know!”

Yash Chopra’s lovely Pamela Chopra then said that Sridevi was not happy wearing white in most of the scenes as she felt it looked “dull”. Sridevi’s mother complained that “White is not considered festive in our community”! Meanwhile, a critic pointed out to Yash Chopra how come there’s Vinod Khanna in the film and yet, there’s no action. He also complained that there are no highlights in the film. Yash Chopra replied, “If you think a fight is a highlight, I feel a song is a highlight. It’s a bigger highlight because a song remains with you after you go out of the theatre.”

However, the bigger challenge was that YRF had no money and had taken bank overdraft. Rishi revealed that had Chandni not worked, Yash Chopra might have shut down YRF. On top of it, the industry’s reaction after the film’s premiere was “tepid and lukewarm”, as revealed by Karan Johar in The Romantics. People complained that it was “too long, too many songs” and that it is “not a commercial film”. Yash Chopra also informed viewers that a distributor refused to release the picture after these reports came out. “A lot of messages were passed that ‘Another flop is coming. Don’t give them theatres’,” said Yash Chopra.

However, the audience whole-heartedly Chandni. It became a smashing hit and brought back the era of romance in Bollywood. Karan Johar smilingly quipped, “It had gone against what the entire trade had predicted.”

BH Style Icons 2023: Karan Johar has a ‘special’ association with the awards; calls his style journey “exhilarating and rewarding”

Over the years, filmmaker Karan Johar has become synonymous with style and fashion. Through his much-loved films and intrinsic style statements, Karan has gone on to inspire generations. It’s not surprising then that he has proved to be an undisputed and inspirational achiever, not just as a filmmaker but also because of his incomparable, peerless, and distinct sense of style. The inimitable touch of chic style that he brings into his professional as well as personal space makes him the ultimate “style icon” that nearly everyone yearns to be.

After all, how can one forget the branded fashion labels from Karan’s debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (remember the ‘COOL’ chain or DKNY attires)? The film went on to inspire fans and several filmmakers alike. Later on too, Karan aced Western as well as Indian fashion trends, including the chiffon saree trend, a la his idol, late Yash Chopra. Karan’s characters, such as the iconic one, Poo (essayed by Kareena Kapoor Khan), also always put their best fashion foot forward.

Not just that, Karan himself has, over the years, proved to be a quintessential style icon with his pitch-perfect ensembles, super cool sunglasses, eye-catching footwear and, of course, his indomitable spirit. As Bollywood Hungama gears up to host the maiden ‘Bollywood Hungama Style Icons’ awards on March 24, we are thrilled to announce our association with the super-talented filmmaker Karan Johar. As Karan completes a glorious 25 years as a filmmaker with flying colours (after debuting with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998), Bollywood Hungama Style Icons awards are set to felicitate the multi-faceted personality for his blockbuster journey, with him being the “Special Focus” personality at this year’s edition of the awards. The idea is to put a special spotlight on style and fashion through the lens of Karan Johar’s films.

Speaking about his stint with inimitable fashion and style, Karan told us: “Fashion and style have been a passion and a hobby for me much more than an existing aesthetic industry. Incorporating and creating fashion and style trends through my 25-year journey in Hindi cinema has been both exhilarating and rewarding in equal measure. Pop culture invariably leads to relevance, and I am proud to be part of this movement through chiffons, silhouettes, hipster fashion, and athleisure. I am delighted to be acknowledged by Bollywood Hungama and look forward to the progression of this property (Bollywood Hungama Style Icons awards).”

A few months ago, we had announced that Bollywood Hungama was gearing up to host the first edition of the Bollywood Hungama Style Icons Awards 2023. Painter Lalitha Lajmi, sister of filmmaker Guru Dutt, passes away at 90

“With Profound grief and sorrow NGMA, Mumbai, Ministry of Culture, Government of India shares the news of demise of veteran artist and printmaker Smt. Lalitha Lajmi who left for heavenly abode this morning (13.02.2023). Our Deepest Condolences. RIP,” NGMA wrote in the post on Twitter.

The note read, “Supported by the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India , we were honoured to present “The Minds Cupboard” – a retrospective of Lalitha Ji’s large body of work at the NGMA on January 12th, 2023.”

“Lalitha Lajmi was born to a poet father and a poly-linguist writer mother in Kolkata in 1932. Coming from a family involved in the arts, Lajmi was very fond of classical dance and painting. She found her calling in painting. An unparalleled watercolourist, through her works she narrates a layered history of the modem Indian woman in the decades that followed Independence. Often her vvorks reflect the hidden tensions that exist between men and women, captured in the different roles they play. Yet, her women are not meek individuals, but assertive and individualistic, with a strong autobiographical element.  Lalitha Ji was a regular at all our NGMA opening receptions and we will miss her gracious presence,” the note concluded.

Lalitha Lajmi’s last work The Mind’s Cupboard is on exhibition at the NGMA in Mumbai till February 26, 2023.
