Ishaan Khatter starrer Pippa may get OTT release

It’s been three months since Ishaan Khatter starrer Pippa was deferred from its theatrical release. The film was supposed to release on December 2, 2022. However, it seems like now the makers are prepping for a direct-to-digital premiere for the movie.

Ishaan Khatter starrer Pippa may get OTT release

As per a report in Mid-Day, this development of opting for an OTT release has happened due to “Ronnie Screwvala’s legal battle with four national multiplex chains for anti-competitive collusion, with respect to the undue imposition of Virtual Print Fee (VPF).” Ronnie Screwvala, who is producing the movie with Siddharth Roy Kapur, has reportedly petitioned the Competition Commission of India (CCI) “against multiplexes making producers and distributors pay Rs 20,000 for every film screened at every property as VPF, calling it a draconian discriminatory charge that multiplex chains are forcibly imposing.” Back then, CCI had noted the producer couldn’t prove his allegations at the time, the dealings between the producer and the multiplex chains haven’t gone down well. However, the makers are very content with the project has turned out and are planning for a digital release soon.

Based on ‘The Burning Chaffees’ written by Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta and scored by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, Pippa is a heroic tank battle film that underscores the bravery of Brigadier Mehta, a veteran of the 45th Cavalry tank squadron, who, along with his siblings, fought on the eastern front during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, which led to the liberation of India’s neighbour Bangladesh. At the centre of the film is the amphibious war tank involved in the victory, affectionately christened “Pippa”, which like an empty ghee da dabba smoothly floats on water.

Produced by RSVP and Roy Kapur Films, Pippa stars Ishaan Khatter, Mrunal Thakur, Priyanshu Painyuli and Soni Razdan.

The Elephant Whisperers couple Bomman and Bella awarded Rs. 1 lakh by Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin after Oscars; Guneet Monga responds

On bringing Bomman and Bellies’ story to life and being recognised worldwide, Kartiki Gonsalves mentioned, “It is absolutely incredible to have an Indian Indigenous documentary on the sacred bond between man and nature on our very own Asian Elephants to be recognised around the world. I still remember when I showed them the final film in a private viewing in October of 2022. There is no greater feeling in the world than to present to Bomman and Bellie everything I have worked on over the last five years to bring their story to the world and to watch them smile and laugh and cry while watching it. That I must admit is the most beautiful feeling in the world. I didn’t just make a documentary on them, they are an integral part of my life along with Sanjana, Raghu and Ammu. It was also a very special moment when I took my parents to their house. We are all family. I am extremely grateful to Netflix and Sikhya Entertainment’s excellent team for believing in the power of this very unique family story. It is truly an honour to be the first-ever Indian director to receive a prestigious Academy Award. With this win, I hope to encourage more young women and men to go out and tell their unique stories however small they might be and to also work on more stories to help connect humans to nature and to understand it better.”

Guneet Monga, on Bomman and Bellie being felicitated, mentioned, “The days following the ceremony have been so incredibly gratifying. The immense love the film is receiving worldwide and the incredible appreciation of people from across the globe has been overwhelming. This opens up a whole new audience for the documentary and I’m happy that the intent and message of our film will further reach millions. Also the impact the film has had and the love for the amazing duo of Bomman and Bellie is for me personally as a filmmaker the biggest achievement of all. The impact this news has had and that they’re being recognised, and felicitated for their incredible story, and their hard work makes me really emotional and happy. This was always our intent in making this humble documentary, to nurture the human relationship with the environment, and two incredible humans who selflessly set an example of how we all can Co-exist.”

This historic win has been lauded by influential voices across the country, from politicians to leading entertainment voices. The documentary has garnered praises from all corners and has given the world the opportunity to see Bomman and Bellie through Kartiki’s lens. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar Box Office: Film crosses Rs. 82 crores mark in Week One (first seven days)

It has been a good first week in theatres for Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar as it has comfortably crossed the Rs. 80 crores mark and then added a bit more as well. Released on the partial holiday of Holi on Wednesday, it has seen a seven week run so far and in the process accumulated Rs. 82.31 crores at the box office. While the opening day had seen Rs. 15.73 crores coming in, Day 7 saw Rs. 6.02 crores been collected at the box office. Of course, had the numbers stayed on course to be 50% of Wednesday and hence been over Rs. 7.50 crores mark then it would have been better.

Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar Box Office Film crosses Rs. 82 crores mark in Week One (first seven days)

Still, one has to look at it in perspective that how has the industry been surviving for last so many months, and the manner in which only two Bollywood films have been really successful since November 2022 – Drishyam 2 and Pathaan. While former closed its run at Rs. 241 crores, latter is at Rs. 540 crores and would close around Rs. 545 crores. On the other hand barring Bhediya [Rs. 70 crores], no other movie has managed a score of even 50 crores, which pretty much tells the tale. In such a scenario, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar will at least be able to sail through.

In fact this Luv Ranjan, Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor starrer would be a rare Rs. 100 Crore Club which the industry would be seeing and that’s some relief indeed. Of course, the cost is high for the film from the rom-com genre perspective but that’s from the producers’ perspective. If one looks, at the money churning which is finally happening at the box office then at least the exhibitors have something to play and audiences have something to watch. In order to keep the supply chain going, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar is doing it bit as it aims for Rs. 125 crores+.

Note: All collections as per production and distribution sources
