Gadar 2 has emerged as a blockbuster in no time. It opened at Rs. 40.10 crores and continued to remain strong in the subsequent days. With Shah Rukh Khan’s much-awaited film Jawan releasing on September 7, a section of netizens concluded that it’ll get affected due to the Gadar 2 wave. We asked trade experts their views on this topic.
Everyone refused to believe this notion. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “I feel Jawan is very much safe. It’s a giant and you can’t underestimate it. Shah Rukh Khan after Pathaan (2023) is another beast altogether. So, let’s not write off this film.”
He added, “Jawan will also take a fantastic start. Shah Rukh knows that right now, Gadar 2 is going to be talked about. He would not like to promote his film at this stage. Eventually, he’ll come back on track.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan agreed, “Every film has its own destiny. Jawan will come 4 weeks after Gadar 2. There’s a different anticipation for Jawan. Also, there’s a huge craze for Shah Rukh Khan after Pathaan. And we all know that he has an insane fan following.”
He continued, “Also, the South directors, actors etc also have their fan base. If Anirudh composes songs in a film, then ‘An Anirudh Musical’ is always mentioned on the posters, that too in bold letters. He’s a huge draw down South. Atlee, Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi, too, have their own following. Vijay Sethupathi is big after Farzi among Hindi audiences. So, one can see that Jawan is very well packaged.”
Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, expressed surprise with the comparisons, “While watching Gadar 2, were you comparing it with Pathaan? Then why are Gadar 2 and Jawan being compared? This is stupidity. 4 weeks are left for Jawan to release. By the time it releases, Gadar 2’s run would have been exhausted. Jawan is a different film. Audiences would definitely love to catch it in cinemas like they did for Pathaan and Gadar 2.”
He, however, also said, “I feel the songs have been underwhelming. It’s high time we get a chartbuster song from Jawan, a kind of song that plays everywhere. This happened in Pathaan. I hope it happens for Jawan as well.”
Atul Mohan disagreed, “Music is not poor. If you ask me, I’d prefer to release the hit song at the very end, just before the release. Average songs take time to grow. Unko pehle chhod dena chahiye. People have now started liking ‘Zinda Banda’.”
Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur, predicted, “Jawan will open very well. It is expected to open at Rs. 50-55 crores. After that, it’ll depend on the content. It’s ridiculous to assume that just because Gadar 2 has worked big time, Jawan will get affected. I don’t agree with it at all. Jawan would have got affected had it come a week after Gadar 2.”
Girish Johar signed off by observing that it’s heartening that so many exciting films are releasing almost every month, “The habit of coming back to cinemas repeatedly is an encouraging sign. This is what we wanted after the pandemic.”
