Akshay Kumar THUNDERS, “Don’t DISCOURAGE me by making me think how much business my films will do. I made a film on sanitary pads. Kisi ke baap mein dum nahin tha ki sanitary pad pe film banaye”

Akshay Kumar’s courtroom drama OMG 2 was released after suffering negativity due to the insane number of cuts imposed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Despite the cuts, the film was awarded an ‘A’ certificate. Akshay Kumar, during the promotions of his latest release, Mission Raniganj, was asked about it and whether it upsets him that the under-18 youngsters couldn’t watch such an important film.

Akshay Kumar THUNDERS, “Don't DISCOURAGE me by making me think how much business my films will do. I made a film on sanitary pads. Kisi ke baap mein dum nahin tha ki sanitary pad pe film banaye”

Akshay Kumar replied, “Well, rules are rules. They (Central Board of Film Certification) felt it was an adult film. But did you guys feel it was an adult film? It was a film that should be shown to youngsters because I made it for them. Thankfully, it’s going to come tomorrow on Netflix. The important thing is that people should know about it.”

He further discussed this topic while also opening up about whether he faces pressure when backing such unconventional films that might probably not score at the box office. Akshay opined, “When I made Toilet – Ek Prem Katha (2017), everybody told me, ‘Yeh koi title hua? Are you mad? Are you telling me that you are making a film on shauchalaya?’. I went ahead and made it. Don’t discourage me by making me think how much business my films will do. Give me courage that I should think at least, these kinds of films are made so that we can enlighten the audience that it’s time to change the society.”

He further said, “I made a film on sanitary pads (Pad Man; 2018). Kisi ke baap mein dum nahin tha ki sanitary pad pe film banaye. Koi haath bhi nahin lagata tha pad ko. I won’t name the person but I was standing with someone. We all stood with pads. He also was handed one pad. His PA whispered in my ear, ‘Yeh inke haath mein mat dilao. Accha nahin lagta’.”

Akshay Kumar speaks highly of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan: “The best part is Rs. 500 aur Rs. 600 crore ka business ho raha hai. Bahut badhiya hai. Taaliyaan bajao!”

Akshay Kumar is a rare star who believes in backing films of diverse genres. Mission Raniganj, his recent release, is his third release of the year, and it is drastically different from his other 2023 releases, Selfiee and OMG 2. On the release day of Mission Raniganj, October 6, Akshay Kumar did group print interviews where he talked about box office success.

Akshay Kumar was asked whether he was motivated when his contemporary Shah Rukh Khan delivered two back-to-back blockbusters in the form of Pathaan and Jawan. Akshay Kumar nodded and said, “Commercial success is important as we have to make other films. It also depends on what kind of commercial success we get. For example, Mission Raniganj is made in a certain budget. And I won’t call it a typical commercial film. It is not a Jawan or a Rowdy Rathore. It has a niche audience.”

Akshay continued, “Nevertheless, I hope the film does very well. Aisi filmon ka business bada nahin hota toh kya nahin banaye? Somebody will have to make it. I can do many commercial films like Welcome, Hera Pheri, Rowdy Rathore etc. The business of these films is going to be much different. But these are high-content films which are realistic to the core. Hence, they are made in a certain way. It’s all about keeping a balance.”

Akshay Kumar was prodded whether he had had a chance to watch recent releases like Jawan and whether he liked it. Akshay Kumar happily answered, “Yes, I see all the films. Jawan was very good. It had a different genre. The best part is Rs. 500 aur Rs. 600 crore ka business ho raha hai. Bahut badhiya hai. Taaliyaan bajao!”

Speaking of Mission Raniganj, Akshay Kumar in this thriller plays the role of the late Jaswant Singh Gill, who successfully rescued 65 miners after they were trapped in a coal mine.

Not-so-sanskaari-anymore: Dono is Rajshri’s FIRST film to feature kissing scenes

This Friday saw the release of Dono, which marks the directorial debut of Sooraj Barjatya’s son Avnish S Barjatya and the acting debut of Sunny Deol’s son Rajveer Deol and Poonam Dhillon’s daughter Paloma. It is backed by Rajshri Productions and as expected, it is a clean family entertainer. However, Dono is not the typical Rajshri film as it features kissing scenes. This makes Dono the first film of the banner to show a liplock.

Not-so-sanskaari-anymore: Dono is Rajshri’s FIRST film to feature kissing scenes

Interestingly, the kissing scenes form a crucial part of the story. It is not added for the heck of it. In fact, it takes the story forward. At the same time, it’s shown in an aesthetic and pleasing manner and is not explicit. Hence, families will still be able to sit through the kissing scenes without feeling uncomfortable.

At the trailer launch of the film, Sooraj Barjatya was also present and he revealed, “When Avnish narrated the concept (of Dono), I told him you are free to make what you want but I told him to remember that tumhari film dekhne Rajshri ki audience bhi aayegi.”

Dono is the story of a boy and a girl who meet at a destination wedding abroad and fall in love with each other. Sunny Deol spoke highly of Rajshri Productions at the trailer launch event. He stated, “You all know about Rajshri Productions. Like Disney, they make films for the whole family. That’s what they have been doing ever since. Kabhi behke nahin. This film is also on the same lines. You might say ‘Inn logon ne phir se shaadi ke upar film banayi’. Their films are about extended families coming together during a marriage. Dono is also about marriage, families and emotions. But the difference is that it’s today’s film. It’s a film about today’s generation. I can vouch for it as I have seen the film.”

Sooraj Barjatya then revealed that Sunny Deol asked him to launch Rajveer with Dono saying, “Then Sunny ji called me ki ‘Suna hai ki aap bete ki picture bana rahe ho’. I don’t know if Rajveer knows about this episode. Main ghabra gaya and the first thing I told Sunny is that ‘Lekin iss film mein action nahin hai’! He told me, ‘It’s ok. I want a subject which my son will love and it should be from the heart’.”

He also added, “Then Poonam ji spoke to my sister, Anuradha. The first pictures we saw of Paloma was where she was holding a gun! Yet, both Avnish and I realized that she’ll suit the part of Meghna.”

Rhea Chakraborty embraces the term ‘chudail’ amid tumultuous times after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death; says, “Maybe I know how to do black magic”

The tragic demise of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput in 2020 sent shockwaves throughout the nation, leaving an irreplaceable void in the lives of his family, friends, and loved ones. In the aftermath of Sushant’s untimely death, Rhea Chakraborty, his partner, found herself at the centre of a storm, accused by his family of abetting his suicide. Rhea faced a deluge of backlash at the time, enduring derogatory labels from detractors, including being called a “chudail” or a “witch.” Now, Rhea has offered her response to these labels.

Rhea Chakraborty embraces the term 'chudail' amid tumultuous times after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death; says, “Maybe I know how to do black magic”

Rhea Chakraborty addressed this issue during a session titled Rising from the Ashes and Finding Herself on the second day of the India Today Conclave Mumbai 2023. When asked about the impact of being labelled a witch, the actress candidly remarked, “I kind of like the name ‘chudail’ (witch).” She further added, “It is interesting. Back in the day who was a witch? A witch was a woman who did not subscribe to the patriarchal society or her own opinion that was against the popular opinion of men and the patriarchal society. Maybe I am that person, maybe I am a chudail. Maybe I know how to do black magic.”

In her discussion, Rhea Chakraborty also addressed the prevalent patriarchal mindset in society. She commented, “It is what it was, and it is what it is in our society. Unfortunately, even today if some man is successful and he gets married and his success ratio drops they will say dekho jab se ye zindagi mein aayi tab se ye iska career kharab ho gaya hai (Look, ever since she ventured into his life, his career has gone haywire). It’s almost like the man had no identity before the woman. Men in India most definitely do not listen to their wives or girlfriends and if they did it would’ve been a much better society.”

For the unversed, Rhea Chakraborty was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in September 2020 and subsequently detained at the Byculla jail for nearly six weeks. She is currently out on bail, and the matter is sub judice at the Bombay High Court.

Kriti Sanon talks about reuniting with Tiger Shroff in Ganapath; says, “He looks photoshopped 24×7”

Bollywood actress Kriti Sanon is currently gearing up for her highly anticipated film Ganapath – A Hero Is Born‘ where she is set to share the screen with Tiger Shroff once again. Recently, Kriti appeared as a guest at the India Today Conclave Mumbai 2023, where she shared her experience of reuniting with Tiger Shroff in a session titled Woman on Top: The Outsider on surviving and thriving in Bollywood.

Kriti Sanon talks about reuniting with Tiger Shroff in Ganapath; says, “He looks photoshopped 24x7”

During the event, Kriti Sanon spoke about her feelings regarding reuniting with Tiger Shroff in Ganapath after their debut film Heropanti. She humorously remarked, “He looks photoshopped 24×7. He’s obviously not. He is the most disciplined guy I have ever come across.”

When asked about what has changed since their collaboration in Heropanti, Kriti expressed, “I think both of us have really grown as people and as actors both. Of course, (after) Heropanti he now has a stubble so which is really nice, he looks really hot. Also I feel like, he, I’ve seen his journey, he’s become so much more confident, his own craft, you know as an actor, as an action hero, I think you know he’s sort of untouchable and I remember in Heropanti both of us were so so young and so like raw and naive. He used to be so shy to even I remember there was a shot where he was supposed to peck me on the cheek and he was so nervous, he was like trembling and now he’s just like really really comfortable on-screen and he’s also doing some bit of like comedy which is like physical comedy which I had not seen him do before so it was really really amazing, almost nostalgic to sort of be back on sets with him.”

Pooja Entertainment’s Ganapath: A Hero Is Born in association with Good Co is a futuristic action extravaganza, helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Vikas Bahl. It is produced by Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky Bhagnani, Deepshikha Deshmukh, and Vikas Bahl, and set for a worldwide release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada on October 20, 2023. While the film marks the return of the Heropanti couple, Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon, they will be sharing screen space with the legendary Amitabh Bachchan for the first time.
