Smile director Parker Finn is taking a leap into uncharted territory with a remake of the cult classic Possession. The 1981 psychological horror masterpiece, originally written and directed by Polish filmmaker Andrzej Żuławski, is set to be reimagined by Finn, sparking a fierce bidding war among Hollywood’s biggest studios. The project has sent shockwaves through the industry, with A24, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, and Warner Bros. all vying for the rights. Meetings are currently underway, and additional companies might join the fray as the process unfolds.
According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Finn himself will wear multiple hats for the project. He’s attached to write the script, direct the film, and produce through his Bad Feeling banner. Joining him as a producer is Robert Pattinson, who’s lending his production expertise through his company Icki Eneo Arlo. While Pattinson’s involvement as an actor remains unconfirmed, the script’s development and scheduling will determine his potential on-screen role. Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee, known for backing horror gems like Barbarian, further bolsters the production team.
Originally set in West Berlin, Possession tells the story of a crumbling marriage. Sam Neill portrays a spy returning home to a wife (Isabella Adjani) seeking a divorce. The narrative descends into a dark spiral, weaving together infidelity, neglect, and a shocking turn of events involving murder, a bizarre tentacled creature, and even doppelgangers.
Meanwhile, Pattinson, last seen dominating the big screen in 2022’s The Batman, is gearing up for his return in January 2025 with Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi film Mickey 17.
