Ranvir Shorey recalls signing David Dhawan and Govinda’s comeback film Do Knot Disturb “under pressure”; calls it “funniest casting experience”

Actor Ranvir Shorey recently shared an amusing yet revealing experience from his career. In an exclusive interview with News18, Shorey opened up about his time working on the 2009 comedy Do Knot Disturb, directed by David Dhawan and starring Govinda. The Unexpected Role in Do Knot Disturb

Ranvir Shorey recalled the time when he had finished working on commercial films like Singh Is Kinng. He stated that he was hopeful that his career was on the verge of a significant change when he received a call from David Dhawan. During the chat, Shorey recalled the excitement of being offered a role by the legendary filmmaker, known for his box office successes. “My funniest casting experience involved David Dhawan sir. He called me up and said, ‘Tu bahot achcha actor hai, beta. Tu kya kaam karta hai, Ranvir!’” Shorey recounted, illustrating the high praise he received from Dhawan.

However, the reality of the role was far from what Shorey had anticipated. Ranvir said, “He then told me to do his next film called Do Knot Disturb, starring Govinda. It was their comeback film together as a director-actor duo. Since David Sir is a box office icon, I said yes under that pressure. And then he gave me a role where I was a dead body for almost 90 percent of the film (laughs),” Shorey shared with a laugh, adding that Dhawan’s compliment, “tu bahot achcha actor hai,” rang ironically in his ears throughout the shoot.

Beyond this humorous anecdote, the Ek Tha Tiger actor has also been candid about the challenges he has faced in his acting career. His recent appearance on Bigg Boss OTT season 3 surprised many, as he revealed the reasons behind his participation in the reality show. Shorey disclosed that he was going through a tough period where offers had dried up, and several projects he had worked on were not getting release dates. This dry spell led him to take up the opportunity to join Bigg Boss OTT.

Well, now he is out of the house after finishing at third runner-up. Currently, he is busy promoting his upcoming show, Shekhar Home, starring Kay Kay Menon.

Vikram confidently shuts down claims about his fan base: “Come to the theatre and see…”

Vikram, one of Tamil cinema’s most versatile actors, recently faced some tough questions while promoting his upcoming film, Thangalaan. During a press conference in Madurai, a reporter suggested that Vikram’s fan following might not be as large as that of his contemporaries, Ajith Kumar or Suriya. Vikram, however, remained unshaken by the comparison and delivered a calm but assertive response. “That’s because you know nothing about my fans. Just come to the theatre and see for yourself,” he said, sparking laughter among the audience.

Emphasizing audience connection over stardom

The reporter persisted, questioning Vikram’s standing among Kollywood’s top three leading heroes. Vikram responded thoughtfully, indicating that he doesn’t prioritize rankings or titles. “Being in the top hero list isn’t important. What matters is the audience. I know how to make films like Dhool and Saamy. I have given my best for Thangalaan. As far as I am concerned, everyone is my fan in some way,” he said, shifting the focus from competition to his dedication to his craft and his audience.

A unique place in Kollywood

The conversation took an interesting turn when another reporter chimed in, defending Vikram by stating that while other heroes might have detractors, Vikram does not. This observation highlights Vikram’s unique position in the industry—an actor who has consistently delivered diverse roles and maintained a strong connection with his fans without attracting much negativity. It’s this rapport with his audience that Vikram seems to cherish the most.

Thangalaan: A new chapter in Vikram’s career

Vikram’s latest venture, Thangalaan, directed by Pa Ranjith, is set against the backdrop of the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). The film showcases Vikram in the role of a tribal leader who stands up to the British Raj, fighting to protect his land and people. The film promises to be an intense and gripping tale, featuring Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, and Daniel Caltagirone in significant roles.

Shah Rukh Khan says, “I don’t like to play characters that demean women”; calls his Devdas character “Loser” after Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial screens at 77th Locarno Film Festival

Shah Rukh Khan has always been known for his versatility as an actor. However, not many know that he initially turned down the iconic role of Devdas in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s eponymous film. Speaking at the 77th Locarno Film Festival, the superstar revealed his reservations about the character. “Devdas was a guy who’s an alcoholic, doesn’t commit to a girl, and goes away. I could not find any essence in it at my age,” Shah Rukh confessed.

Shah Rukh Khan says, “I don't like to play characters that demean women”; calls his Devdas character “Loser” after Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial screens at 77th Locarno Film Festival

Shah Rukh Khan’s Initial Reservations

Reflecting on the role, Khan said, “Devdas was the movie that my mother loved watching, and my dad also used to talk about it. It’s one of the greatest classic films with Dilip Kumar. But when Mr. Sanjay Leela Bhansali approached me, I initially said no. I thought Devdas was a loser, an alcoholic, and I was too cool to play him.” However, Bhansali’s persistence, coupled with the director’s exceptional talent, eventually led Shah Rukh to agree to the project.

A Character Study, Not an Idol

During the discussion, Shah Rukh Khan made it clear that he never intended for audiences to admire Devdas. “I don’t like to play characters that demean women. I’ll be honest. I didn’t want him to be liked for the reason in the film that he, you know, doesn’t commit to a woman and essentially abandons her. I wanted him to come across as a spineless person, not someone you should look up to.”

He further added, “It’s enjoyable to watch, but it’s not a character you take back home. Yes, the film was beautifully made, and the performances were strong, but Devdas as a person was not admirable. He was tragic, but that doesn’t make him a hero.”

As part of the Locarno Film Festival tribute, Devdas was screened once again, reminding audiences of its unforgettable tragedy. The film’s tragic ending, where Devdas dies on the streets longing for one last glimpse of Paro, remains etched in the memories of those who have seen it.
