Looking back on the year, what are your takeaways?
That there is no substitute for hard work. And if your heart is clean and you put your heart and soul into your work, even if it takes longer, slowly and surely people will start recognising that about you. There’s no need to get caught up in the noise and PR game and lose bearings on the stuff that really matters. Even if it seems like the only way to get ahead in this race.

Anything else?
Also to keep evolving. And never take yourself too seriously. And know that there’s never any set formula for success, it’s all about enjoying the journey and never getting complacent.

The past two years have been tough on all. How did you cope workwise and personally?
Work-wise I still get agitated and anxious every time I have a break from shooting for more than ten days. I start feeling empty and like a social media personality who’s just getting dressed up and clicking photos and doing events. It starts feeling kind of depressing because unless I’m creatively stimulated or invigorated or on a set in an environment doing what I love, something that feels meaningful; I’ve realised I tend to get into a funk.

So how did you cope with the period of lockdown?
I don’t know how I got through those two years, but I think everyone’s priority was more just survival: there was so much happening in the world that we were just thankful to be with our families and safe. And it actually taught me a lot about humanity. I think it was such a catalyst to our personal growth. I also got to spend time with my family and read and watch things and get to know who I am and what I want to be. It was nice not to be seen for some time.

Mili got you great reviews. Were you disappointed by the box office collections?
Yes I was. More than anything my naive outlook of if a film is good and made with good intentions, it’ll do well and connect- it was kind of shattered a bit. Because I think it also matters what kind of good film you are, and what kind of things you’re offering to a theatrical audience, so it was a learning process. But I stand by the film; I feel a lot of pride that I was a part of it and with what we made. I hope more people see it once it’s out on Netflix.

Do you feel that now you have finally come into your own and that people are not comparing you unfavourably with your mother?
It definitely feels like there are more positive comparisons than negative ones. The tonality is more, ‘Oh, this of Janhvi reminds me of her mother.’ As opposed to, ‘She’s so shit compared to her mother.’ So while it feels definitely more positive, I do obviously realise there are still many people to win over. And I will. I have that much faith in myself, my craft and my hard work.

Your sister Khushi is getting ready for her debut next year. How do you feel about this?
I feel very excited!! She just wrapped her film. And I think it’s such a sweet lovely film and she’s given so much to it. And Zoya Akhtar has created such a wonderful fresh world. I’m very excited

As an actor what are the roles that you would like to challenge yourself with during the coming year?
I really want to do comedy!!! And I really want to dance; I’ve been dying to dance. Or a period film. But comedy first. With lots of dancing

EXCLUSIVE: Huma Qureshi reveals she would not have signed Maharani pre-pandemic; says, “I would not have taken up the show if it was offered during non-pandemic time”

Bollywood is filled with some talented actors. One such actor who we cannot miss mentioning is Huma Qureshi. She has given great performances in films like Badlapur, Gangs of Wasseypur, Monica O My Darling and many more. This actress did not fail us to give us interesting performance even in the pandemic. Huma’s Maharani was one such piece of art that earned people’s interest and attention.

In the Bollywood Hungama Best Actress Round Table 2022 presented by Astroyogi, Huma opened up about her experience with Maharani, “When I signed the first season of Maharani, it was during the start of pandemic. It was the first Zoom narration I ever had for any script. I remember finding it quite interesting, but I still wanted to read it”.

Sharing her viewpoint on the script of Maharani, she said, “When I read it, there were a lot of concerns. One of them being the obvious that the industry has, i.e., it is the role of a female who has 2-3 kids of hers. If you do it, you might be slotting yourself. You still might have ten more years before you take up these kinds of roles. I would lie if I said I did not think about it or not questioned myself.”

Dealing with conflicting thoughts in her mind, she eventually cleared up the concerns. In reference to this, she further said, “But then I thought it was an amazing script, and I was so glad it happened during the pandemic because you get all the time to think about your reason of living or being an actor and basically all those existential questions that we all thought about or asked ourselves. I am very grateful as it was during that time I got this script. I don’t know maybe if I got this script during non-pandemic times, I would have not taken up the project and would have got distracted. It was only because I had all this time to really think about it.”

Taking her experience further, she said, “I felt I must do this project like it was the last time I was doing anything with whatever I got. I am extremely grateful to Subhash Kapoor sir for writing and conceiving this beautiful character and for trusting me with it. It is quite heavy lifting. It is twenty episodes down and is one of the most fulfilling characters that I have ever played. It is a proper character with nothing missing in it according to me”.

As Ranveer Singh delivers three back-to-back flops at the box office, trade experts share their views; say, “When a film flops, the hero gets the blame”

The much-awaited film Cirkus has bombed big time at the box office. For Ranveer Singh, this is his third consecutive flop after ’83 (2021) and Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2022). We asked trade experts to discuss this aspect and the way ahead for the highly talented actor.

Trade analyst Atul Mohan said “He is one of the top actors today and has one of the highest numbers of endorsements. ’83 got acclaim. It came at a time when it couldn’t do well. His performances have always worked, even when the films didn’t. Filmmaking is team work. You can’t bog down an actor after he goes through flops. Also, these actors are too big and 3-4 flops in a row don’t affect them. One hit and he’ll be back in the game. Thankfully, he’s working with top directors and banners.”

Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi agreed and felt that his next film, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, is a promising entertainer that can help him get back into the big league. He said, “It is helmed by Karan Johar, one of the most exciting directors out there. And he’s also a part of Shankar’s next, which seems huge. Right now, we are living in a time when every actor or star is as good or bad as the films that he’s doing. Ajay Devgn delivered Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior (2020) which was the biggest hit of his career at that point. This was followed by flops like Runway 34 (2022) and an extended cameo in Thank God (2022). Then he delivered a blockbuster, Drishyam 2. It’s not like his stardom was eroded between Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior and Drishyam 2. It’s just that the films didn’t work. The same applies to Ranveer Singh. When his films work, he will deliver more Padmaavat’s and Bajirao Mastani’s all over again.”

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh, however, opined, “It would make a dent (to his track record) because when a film flops, the hero gets the blame. Log bolte hai ki ‘hero ki film flop ho gayi’. Even Rohit Shetty is being blamed but Ranveer has delivered 3 flops in a row. All 3 were backed by reputed names like Kabir Khan, Yash Raj Films and Rohit Shetty. It can’t get bigger than Rohit Shetty, that too in the Christmas weekend.”

Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur, remarked, “Ranveer Singh will have to be very careful while picking up his new films. ’83 was not a wrong choice. Any actor would have given his right arm to work in that film. It beautifully and intelligently recreated the 1983 World Cup but commercially, it didn’t work sadly as the youth probably couldn’t relate to these yesteryear cricketers.”

He continued, “Ranveer Singh had a nice time working with Rohit Shetty in Simmba (2018). He also did a cameo in Rohit’s Sooryavanshi (2021). Then when he was offered Cirkus, it seemed like he must have thought that Rohit Shetty jo film laayega, main kar dunga. That’s where he went wrong. He shouldn’t be emotional now in choosing scripts. He’s a good actor and will continue to do good cinema. But since 3 of his films didn’t work, uska career jhatka kha gaya.”

Naga Chaitanya starrer Custody gets a release date; film to release on May 12

Naga Chaitanya and Venkat Prabhu will be coming together for the Telugu-Tamil bilingual movie Custody which is being mounted on a large scale with massive production values and first-class technical standards. Touted to be one of the most expensive movies in Chaitanya’s career, Krithi Shetty is the leading lady in the film. The recent update on that front is that, after releasing the first look poster and title of the film, the makers have now locked a release date as May 12, 2023.

Readers may recall that the makers had released the title and the first look poster of the movie on Chaitanya’s birthday to an overwhelming response. It was also revealed that Naga Chaitanya will be seen in a ferocious avatar of a police officer in the film. Talking about his character, a source had earlier revealed, “The makers wanted to showcase the honest and determined police officer avatar of Naga Chaitanya in the poster. He is like ‘A Shiva’ who stands tall against all odds to be the change he wishes to see. It appears that he must fight his own system for something in which he believes and stands. Venkat Prabhu wanted to present Chay in an entirely new avatar that is impressive and exciting.”

With Aravind Swamy playing the antagonist, Custody stars Priyamani, Sarathkumar, and Sampath Raj will be seen in pivotal roles along with Krithi Shetty who will be playing Chay’s love interest in the film. Further talking about the film, the film has music by the legendary father-son duo of Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja and Yuvan Shankar Raja. Srinivasaa Chitturi will be producing this commercial entertainer under the banner Srinivasaa Silver Screen whereas Pavan Kumar presents it.

Veteran producer Nitin Manmohan passes away after suffering from a massive heart attack

Veteran film producer Nitin Manmohan has passed away in a hospital in Mumbai. The producer was rushed to hospital on December 3 after suffering from a massive heart attack. He was on the ventilator for 15 days, his friend and producer Kaleem Khan confirmed the news.

A team of doctors were treating Nitin Manmohan at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Navi Mumbai. They were providing him with the best care. As per reports, his son Soham, who lives in Dubai, had flown down to Mumbai to be by his father’s side.

Nitin Manmohan is survived by his wife, son and daughter. He was veteran actor Manmohan’s son.

Nitin Manmohan is a well-known Indian producer, director and writer who produced films including Bol Radha Bol (1992), Laadla (1994), Army (1996), Shool (1999), Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega (2001), Deewangee (2002), Dus (2005), Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011), Ready (2011).

Tunisha Sharma Death: Arrested Sheezan Khan allegedly deleted WhatsApp chats another ex-girlfriend

Television actress Tunisha Sharma, who was starring as Shehzaadi Mariam in Ali Baba Dastaan-E-Kabul TV show, allegedly died by suicide on December 24 on the sets of the fantasy-themed show at Vasai in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. The actress was only 20. Her last rites were conducted on Tuesday, December 27 in presence of her family, friends and industry colleagues. Her co-actor Sheezan Khan has been arrested in alleged abetment to suicide case. They reportedly broke up 15 days before the incident took place.

The police said that Sheezan Khan was talking to another woman, who was his ex-girlfriend, on WhatsApp but later deleted all his chats with her. As per the NDTV report, the police found “250 pages of WhatsApp chats from Sheezan’s mobile phone which will be studied and further analyzed. The cops have written to WhatsApp to retrieve all of Sheezan’s chats with his another ex-girlfriend and are probing why he deleted the messages.”

Following her death on December 24, Tunisha Sharma’s mother filed a complaint against Sheezan Khan for alleged abetment to suicide. The actor has been sent to judicial custody following his arrest as the investigation is underway. It is being reported that the two actors were in a relationship and that they had broken up 15 days ago. Tunisha Sharma was allegedly under stress and is speculated that this drove her to the edge.

The actress reportedly did not leave any suicide note. Police will conduct investigation from both murder and suicide angles.
