Captain Marvel Has The WEIRDEST Battle Cry in Comics
Many Marvel heroes have taken on the mantle of Captain Marvel before Carol Danvers, and each one has added his or her unique spin to the superhero. The original Captain Marvel (or Mar-Vell) was considered one of the Marvel Universe’s most noble heroes before he succumbed to cancer. Monica Rambeau -- currently known as Spectrum -- had the unique ability to turn into any form of energy she could think of. And then... There was Mar-Vell’s son Genis.
Created from the original Mar-Vell’s cell samples, Genis-Vell was artificially aged to adulthood and basically thrust into the role his father originally held. While Genis did not always have the experience of emotional maturity to deal with his massive responsibilities, he did get help – by becoming psychically bonded to professional sidekick Rick Jones who was once similarly bonded to Mar-Vell. Unfortunately, Rick didn’t always give the new Captain Marvel the best advice.

Rick and Genis’ weird relationship was explored in a new Captain Marvel series that ran during the early 2000s. In the comic, Rick and Captain Marvel were bonded in such a way that only one could exist in the “normal” Marvel Universe while the other stayed in the Microverse. However, the two were psychically linked, allowing Rick to observe the “real” world through Genis’ eyes and speak to him telepathically.
Rick was uniquely suited for this task, having basically become a “professional sidekick” to the Hulk, Captain America, and the original Captain Marvel. As such, he felt obligated to give Genis the benefit of his superior experience… although that didn’t mean he didn’t occasionally mess with his mental roommate. Early in their initially tense relationship, Rick told Genis that Captain Marvel needed a catch phrase like the Human Torch’s “Flame on!” or Hulk’s famous “Hulk Smash!” line to distinguish him. Fortunately for Marv, Rick had a catchphrase all picked out for him – “Owah Tagoo Siam!”
Say what now? While the words might seem like some weird alien language to the uninitiated, “Owah Tagoo Siam!” is actually a famous prank used by grade school kids who get a newcomer to slowly chant the words, unaware that they’re actually saying “Oh, what a goose I am!” The prank has been used by everyone from Boy Scouts to celebrities – but since this Captain Marvel had very little real-world experience, he completely believed Rick when he told him that “Owah Tagoo Siam!” was an ancient Earth battle cry that meant, “Evil beware!”
As a result, Captain Marvel spent several issues screaming “Owah Tagoo Siam!” as he flew from rescue to rescue, leaving many bewildered civilians scratching their heads. Considering that one of this Captain Marvel’s powers is Cosmic Awareness which gave him a heightened knowledge of the universe, this must have been particularly embarrassing when he accidentally flew into a gaggle of real geese and finally caught on to what he was really saying!
Eventually, Genis left the role of Captain Marvel leaving it open for Carol Danvers to fill. Ironically, in the MCU movie Captain Marvel, Carol comes across a cat (actually an alien Flerken) named Goose who proves instrumental in her final battle. Perhaps it’s time to resurrect the famous Captain Marvel battle cry?
