Darkseid Unleashes Omega Beams In Zack Snyder's Justice League Fan Art

Darkseid takes aim with his infamous Omega Beams in a new work of Justice League Snyder Cut fan art. Created by legendary comic book writer-artist Jack Kirby, the character debuted via a cameo appearance in 1970's Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #134. He subsequently made his first more prominent appearance in Forever People #1 in early 1971. Since then, Darkseid became one of the most acclaimed and popular villains, not just in the world of DC Comics but the medium as a whole. As such, he has been adapted multiple times. Most recently, a version of Darkseid has featured in DC Universe's animated Harley Quinn series. A less comical iteration also featured in Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, voiced by Tony Todd.

A live-action version was set to make an appearance in Zack Snyder's Justice League. Though potentially brief, the appearance would have led directly into Justice League 2 and the remainder of Snyder's initial five-movie DCEU plan. Unfortunately, the film went through significant reshoots and other changes when Joss Whedon took over as director. One of the biggest changes was removing Darkseid in favor of making a decidedly underwhelming version of Steppenwolf the movie's sole antagonist. The decision was also one of the primary criticisms levied against Justice League following its release - with many fans still passionately eager to see the ruler of Apokolips on the big screen.

Thanks to digital artist SPDRMNKYXXIII, fans can now get a glimpse of how the character might have looked. Set against a desolate and obliterated backdrop similar to that glimpsed in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's Knightmare sequence, Darkseid stands tall and calmly powerful. According to the image's description, Darkseid is addressing Henry Cavill's version of Superman, vowing to make him watch the decimation of humanity. Furthermore, the image itself has Darkseid unleashing his Omega Beams. Check out the full image below:

Similar to one of Superman's own powers, the Omega Beams are laser-like rays that are omitted from his eyes. As depicted, however, Darkseid's attack isn't restricted to firing straight and can lock on to specific targets. Equally, they are much more powerful - able to not only harm Kryptonians but destroy entire planets. They are also fast enough to catch speedsters like Barry Allen aka The Flash. Stemming from a cosmic source known as the Omega Effect, the energy can also be used to teleport himself or others across time and space. As much as they can be used to destroy, the Omega Beams can also be used to resurrect people at Darkseid's will.

Fortunately, it was announced that Snyder's original vision for Justice League will be released via HBO Max in 2021. Subsequently, Ray Fisher confirmed his role as Darkseid. It remains to be seen just how big of a role the villain will have in the film. However, it's been reported that Snyder's version also included a visual history lesson documentary Darkseid's backstory. Whether or not that means there will be a seen of him unleashing his Omega Beams is equally up in the air. Whatever the case, the above art offers an impressive imagining of how it might look and will at least whet some appetites until the Snyder Cut of Justice League is released.
