Doctor Strange’s Hands Got Fixed in The Most DISGUSTING Way

Fans know that Doctor Strange originally sought out the Ancient One to fix the nerve damage in his hands that prevented him from continuing as a surgeon. Although Strange wanted a quick fix, the Ancient One convinced him to spend years studying the mystic arts, allowing Stephen Strange to transform from a selfish surgeon into the Sorcerer Supreme.

But what if this wasn’t the way it turned out? What if by the time Strange found the Ancient One, his master had already selected a pupil – a student named Victor Von Doom? Incredibly, this happened in an alternate universe, which resulted in Doctor Doom becoming the Sorcerer Supreme, and Doctor Strange getting a very unconventional (and disgusting) cure for his hands.

The story occurred in What If --? #52 in a creepy alternate reality story called “What if Dr. Doom Became Sorcerer Supreme?” In this parallel world, Victor Von Doom sought out the Ancient One to learn his mystic secrets after his failed experiment to rescue his mother from the netherworld. Sensing both arrogance and nobility in Doom, the Ancient One attempted to nurture Doom’s better qualities by taking him on as a student. Doom proves an apt pupil, at least as far as learning the mystic arts goes. He also continues building on his technical expertise – creating robotic doppelgangers and inventing a nanite bomb that he implants in Baron Mordo’s head when the Ancient One’s other pupil attempts to kill Doom. Some time later, however, Strange seeks out the Ancient One hoping he can heal his hands.

Sensing an opportunity to test Doom’s humanity, the Ancient One asks Doom to help Strange with his problem. Annoyed, Doom takes Strange to his workshop – and proceeds to cut off his hands and graft a pair of his robotic Doombot hands in his place. While this “cure” does allow Strange to regain his surgical skills (and even perform operations with superhuman accuracy), the Ancient One realizes Doom has failed to realize Strange needed mental and emotional balance more than a cure for his physical ills.

Deciding that Doom cannot be his successor, the Ancient One decides to simply help Doom free his mother from Mephisto’s netherworld. Although the Ancient One succeeds in saving Doom’s mother, he dies in the process and Doom takes his place as Sorcerer Supreme. In the aftermath, Dormammu decides to launch his invasion of Earth, and the new “Sorcerer Doom” recruits the Fantastic Four to retrieve some mystical gems for him from the past. Doom uses the artifacts to defeat Dormammu but is critically injured in the process.

Ironically, the surgeon chosen to operate on Doom turns out to be Stephen Strange, who feels Doom’s death offers a sort of poetic justice for how he mutilated his hands. However, Doom – who sensed great mystic potential in Strange – decides to have his Doombots abduct Strange and then download his memories and personality into Strange’s brain, effectively hijacking Strange’s body to continue on as Sorcerer Supreme. It’s a grim ending that basically shows Doctor Doom mutilated Doctor Strange not once but twice in this alternate reality.
