Kylo Ren battles Darth Vader in new Star Wars fan art. Now that the Skywalker saga has officially come to a close with last year’s The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars fans can take a complete look at the franchise’s strengths and weaknesses.

That being said, fans have never shied away from vocalizing their feelings for the iconic franchise and its nine installments. And while the original Star Wars trilogy hasn’t been as heavily scrutinized over time as say, the prequels or The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker have, some aspects of the first three films have been subject to their fair share of critical interpretation. One such element is Darth Vader and the pull of the Dark Side. Recently, even Mark Hamill revealed his initial disappointment with George Lucas’ decision not to have Luke Skywalker join the Dark Side at the end of Return of the Jedi. None the less, Vader has undoubtedly remained one of the most fascinating characters in the series, despite so much being known about him. This fascination has remained significant throughout the Star Wars series, ultimately giving way to a new generation of the Dark Side with Kylo Ren in the sequel trilogy.

By this point, however, Star Wars fans are well aware that Ren makes a grandiose turn from the Dark Side at the end of Rise of Skywalker. In the film’s thrilling finale, Ren sacrifices himself to help Rey defeat Emperor Palpatine once and for all. Given that he’s already taken on one major element of the Dark Side and prevailed, Star Wars fans can’t help wonder what it would have been like if Ren were to meet and do battle against his grandfather, Darth Vader. Thankfully, Star Wars fan ultraraw26 has provided us with an artist’s rendering of what such an epic battle might look like, via his Instagram account. You can check out the full image below:

In addition to his artwork, ultraraw26 clarified that Vader and Ren are battling on the planet of Mustafar in the bottom scene and that the zoomed out version of the planet can also be seen above that. Since Rise of Skywalker revealed that Ren would ultimately sacrifice himself for good rather than evil, there has been some new insight that challenges the notion that Ren was ever fully committed to the Dark Side in the first place. Because of this (and despite the fact that neither Vader nor Ren is still alive), ultraraw26’s depiction of grandfather and grandson gives fans one last glimpse of two Skywalker saga titans engaged in a battle that will never be realized on the big screen.

The idea of Kylo Ren and Darth Vader waging war against one another imagines a time and place that is very enticing to many Star Wars fans. However, if both Vader and Ren ultimately found their place on the right side of the Force, this artwork fails to remain faithful to any of the mythology that the Star Wars saga has built over the years. For this reason, the imaginary battle might look fascinating, but beyond the aesthetic of two powerhouses clashing, it doesn’t provide much else. That’s fine, however, as fan art has always been able to reflect the unreachable or otherwise impossible in any given franchise.
