The DARK Captain Marvel Actually Killed Her Own Mother

The darkCaptain Marvel actually killed her own mother. In the aftermath of 2008's "Secret Invasion" event, Marvel Comics launched one of their most creative ideas in years. The aftermath of the Skrull invasion saw Norman Osborn rise to power, and he formed his own team of Dark Avengers. This was the so-called "Dark Reign," and it lived up to its title.

The villainous Moonstone became the Dark Avengers' version of Ms. Marvel. Karla Sofen is a twisted psychologist who revels in the exercise of power and manipulation; when she practiced her profession, she rejoiced in manipulating clients into taking their own lives. She became one of Marvel's most powerful supervillains when she absorbed an alien Moonstone into her own body, and she's gone toe-to-toe with the Hulk. Moonstone is a force to be reckoned with. But just how evil is she really?

The answer was given inMs. Marvel #38, when Norman Osborn decided to have his new Dark Avengers undergo psych evaluations. Moonstone was sent to meet with Doctor Gerald Wright, in part, because Osborn was curious as to her professional opinion of the psychiatrist. What Osborn didn't know, however, was that Wright was actually a telepath who understood all too well what kind of monsters had been recruited into the Dark Avengers. He had come to Avengers Tower intending to murder the Dark Avengers, and he came close to killing Moonstone - until he got distracted. He learned the terrible fate of Moonstone's mother, a secret locked behind a psychic barrier guarded by a projection of the Hulk.

Moonstone's mother worked hard to pay for her daughter's education, taking on three jobs at once. "She gave me everything," Moonstone admitted. "Her whole life was spent making sure I had everything I needed. And how did I pay her back? I found this Moonstone, and I used it to become a bad, bad person." It seems Moonstone's mother was the one person who could make her feel ashamed of what she had become. And so Karla Sofen faced a choice; would she allow this shame to redeem her, or would she commit to the path of evil? Horrifically, she chose the latter, and suffocated her mother in her sleep. She then burned down the apartment to conceal the crime. Moonstone chose to relive this moment for Doctor Wright, and the experienced shocked him so much she was able to break his hold on her mind. He paid the ultimate price for his distraction.

In theory, the Thunderbolts were supposed to be about redemption. But when Moonstone chose to murder her own mother, she passed the point of no return. There is no going back for Karla Sofen; she has embraced evil to the core, and will simply kill anything that tries to redeem her. She proved that when she killed her mother.
