From Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone’s Mickey-Minnie avatar to Hrithik Roshan’s love for Popeye and samosa, artist Arpit Dudwewal takes us through his artwork
Arpit Dudwewal is a caricature artist who combines his love for all things entertainment and cricket through his art. The artist creates innovative digital artwork around popular celebrities from the world of entertainment and cricket. While he largely focuses on entertainment and cricket, he also shares his take on current topics through his art. One of his initial artworks of Vicky Kaushal winning the Filmfare was shared by the actor himself. Actors like Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh have also come across his artwork and shared the same on their social media handles. Recently, in a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Arpit gave an insight into six of his artwork.
Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt dominated the news in the month of April with the news of their wedding surfacing in the beginning of the month. There was a huge craze around their wedding among fans. On the day of their wedding, after Alia released the first pictures, Arpit shared his take on the wedding. He shared an artwork of himself dressed in sherwani with a board that reads, “Haan bhai. Haan ho gayi shaadi”.

“I was opening Instagram and everyone was going, ‘Oh my god! Oh my god!. Even my friend who lives with me was like, ‘oh my god!’. I was like ‘Tumhe thodi invite kiya shaadi mai but you’re doing Oh my god! Oh my god! (You weren’t invited to the wedding, right? Still, you are going Oh my god! Oh my god!). I was so fed up with everyone’s story on Instagram, meme pages, and everywhere. I was like ‘chalo haan, chalo hogayi shaadi’(Yes! It’s done. The wedding is over). Then I made an artwork of myself wearing sherwani. Even the newspaper was like ‘Ranbir ki ghar abhi baraat aaya or ye hua and woh hua (The groom’s side has arrived or this happened and that happened). They had security and they did not want too much hype around it but people were really hyped about the wedding. So I was like ‘Haan, bas ho gaya’,” he said.

Recently, after the release of the trailer of Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Arpit shared the artwork of Ranveer Singh as superman feeding a baby. Talking about the artwork, Arpit said, “I saw the trailer and I related to the father trying to save his newborn baby. He’s trying to save his child and for every child his father is some or the other superhero; be it Superman, Batman, or Spider-Man. I had seen in one of the Justice League movies in around 2017 where Superman feeds a child. So from there, I got the concept. To make it much more personalized for Ranveer, I added the JJ for Jayeshbhai Jordaar and with that ring and everything so that it looks much more personalized for him.”

In the above artwork, Arpit imagined what it would be like; Akshay Kumar’s popular character from the Hera Pheri series meets his Bala from Housefull 4. “Last year, I think this pose was everywhere, in every meme and everywhere this pose was just there. Before that, for his birthday I drew his Bala character because I found the character very funny and very unique, especially what Akshay did with the character. So I just thought why not mix both, like showing Raju and Bala doing that same pose.” Since the post was made around Valentine’s Day, Arpit opted to name the film ‘Phir Se Single’ as is seen in the upper left corner of the post.

For Hrithik Roshan, Arpit combined the actor’s love for the cartoon character Popeye and the Indian snack samosa. Talking about the creative, Arpit shared, “I found through his team that his favourite cartoon character is Popeye. He loves the Popeye character and samosa is his favourite snack. In some shows, Hrithik has said that his favourite snack is samosa. So I thought why not make one with Popeye and samosa. And Olive is crazy for Hrithik Roshan and he is with Popeye.”

Arpit had a cartoon character phase where he made creatives of actors along with their favourite cartoon characters. In the above artwork, Virat’s viral dog walk has been blended with the Scooby Dooby Doo gang along with Winnie The Poo, who is Anushka’s favourite character. “One of my cartoon works was of Virat and Anushka and it was shared by Anushka on her Instagram stories. It was during COVID-19 times. Then I started making Bollywood characters with their favourite cartoon characters. If you see my page at that time you’ve seen other characters also with the Disney characters or some of their favourite cartoon characters. So through someone from Anushka’s team, I asked them if I could get to know her favourite cartoon character. So they checked and they told me that it was Winnie The Pooh. And at that time, I think that the video of the Virat Kohli doing this went viral which Anushka posted. So I thought of putting all of them together,” Arpit revealed.

One of his most popular artwork is the presentation of Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone as Mickey and Minnie Mouse. The post was also shared by Ranveer Singh on his social media handle. “For this, I was not really thinking anything. I was just thinking, ‘What can I make for him?’ Because Ranveer is one of my favourite actors. I really adore him. So I was thinking what to do? Because I think everyone makes his cartoon, which he doesn’t share. Because of his style and everything, I always thought he will always go with the unique thing and nothing which is just simple. And at that time he was posting stories of Deepika (Padukone) making food for him during the lockdown. So I drew him as a Mickey Mouse and made him fat and Deepika Padukone cooking for him,” said Arpit.

One of the most adorable posts is that of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli holding their little one- Vamika. Apart from capturing the expressions of the new parents, Arpit also personalised their outfits. “For the outfit concept, because Virat’s clothing brand WROGN collaborated with Minions, I added Minion. Anushka Sharma’s brand has the Chacha Chowdhary series. It is Chacha Chowdhary but it looks like an Angry Bird. And the concept was because at that time when the baby was born everyone was congratulating them but they were not ready to show the face of their baby in public, which was obviously okay. They don’t want the baby to get so much limelight at this early stage. So I made a post of them holding the baby and Anushka is crying happy tears and Virat is really happy. I just tried to portray that father and mother feeling but generally, fathers don’t show happy tears. They cry inside but they don’t show on their face. So just tried to make Virat look happy and she has happy tears,” he said.
