Harry Potter Screenwriter Addresses J.K. Rowlings Anti-Trans Comments

Harry Potter screenwriter addresses J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans comments. Rowling has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons as of late, after making anti-trans statements via her Twitter account last weekend. Though Rowling’s recent comments weren’t the first time that the acclaimed Harry Potter author has been publically criticized for her stance on trans women, this time, she appears to have gone too far. Wide assortments of celebrities, as well as colleagues both past and present, have made public statements recently, distancing themselves from Rowling’s opinions.

The controversy over Rowling’s initial Twitter statements has also intensified as the 54-year-old shows no signs of backing down or apologizing, despite heavy criticism by members of the trans community and their allies. What’s more, the backlash has further cemented Rowling’s reputation as a TERF (Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist), a term she has repeatedly rejected and pointed to as another manner of attempting to silence female voices.

So far, all three of the lead cast members from the Harry Potter films have stepped forward to side with the trans community, and now, in an exclusive statement to Variety, the wizard franchise’s main screenwriter, Steve Kloves, has also spoken up. In a statement that echoes the sentiments of his Harry Potter colleagues, Kloves touched on the universal values of acceptance and diversity concerning trans and non-binary identifying people by saying:

“Our diversity is our strength. In these challenging times, it’s more important than ever that transgender women and men, and people who are non-binary, feel safe and accepted for who they are. It seems very little to ask.”

Kloves’ involvement with the Harry Potter film franchise has seen him write the scripts for every installment, save for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which was written by Michael Goldenberg. In addition to the Potter films, Kloves is also involved with the Fantastic Beasts series as a producer as well as writer of the yet to be filmed third entry in the series. He’s worked with closely with Rowling for literally decades, making his disagreement with the author’s recent statements all the more powerful. It remains to be seen how this entire incident will affect the release of Fantastic Beasts 3 once it is complete. Still, as things currently stand, Rowling’s name alone has been enough to elicit a substantial degree of anger and feelings of betrayal from many. Her statements have cast the Potterverse in a whole new light, with cast members like Daniel Radcliffe doing what they can to comfort fans.

It is indeed troubling for so many to see someone with Rowling’s stature make anti-trans comments. The author has set herself up as a pillar of morality and tolerance over the years. Now, however, it seems doubtful that Rowling will be able to regain such profound respect. Beyond any anger that her words have caused, perhaps one of the most common emotions is sadness. It is demoralizing for an entire generation to grow up with the support of someone like Rowling, only to learn that she doesn’t wish to make the same concessions to a marginalized group of people that her colleagues and friends are willing to make.

Captain America Star Credits Marvel Movie Success On One Common Denominator

Chris Evans opened up about what he thinks makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe so successful. Evanshas played Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, for almost a decade. The actor also has an extensive film career outside of the MCU, includingKnives Out, Not Another Teen Movie, and Sunshine. Since embodying this superhero persona, Steve Rogers appeared in The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Marvel Studios started the MCU with a small cameo at the end of 2008's The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man that same year. From the seeds of those two movies, Marvel Studios cultivated a beautiful (and lucrative) garden of 23 films (and counting). Each release, except for a few, has been bigger and better received than the last. There are plenty of components that make Marvel movies box office hits. The films have A-list actors like Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr and have an equally strong creative team behind them. Additionally, the films bring to huge target groups, comic book readers, and action movie fans, together.

Evans sat down with The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast and revealed the secret serum that gives the MCU its power. Evans believes there is one key ingredient that makes the serum as powerful as it is—an ingredient powerful enough to land Marvel 5 of the highest-rated movies of 2019 with Avengers: End Game as the top-grossing film of the year. Evans accredits Marvel's success to the president of Marvel Studios, producer Kevin Feige.

"The buck stops with Kevin Feige, doesn't it? I mean, it must. It'd be one thing if there were a few good Marvel movies and then a few stinkers. It'd be one thing if every other shop in town was making the hits as effortlessly as Marvel was But it's just not happening that way. I guess when you start to collect the data and figure out what's the common denominator, I really think it must be Kevin Feige. He doesn’t let things be bad."

Evans credits Feige not only for the MCU's success but also the success of his own acting career. During the podcast interview, Evans confessed that he struggled with his mental health during his career. While filming Puncture (2010), he began suffering from panic attacks, which made him doubt his acting ability. During this time, Feige invited him to audition for the role of Steve Rogers in the first Captain America. However, due to this alarming decline in his mental health, Evans initially turned down the role. Feige was persistent, offering the opportunity to audition several times and eventually flat-out offered Evans the character— an offer Evans could not deny. Evans calls it the best decision he ever made and that he "owes it to [Marvel chief] Kevin Feige for being persistent and helping me avoid making a giant mistake."

It is fair to say that the chief of Marvel has a hand in all of its success. Feige made all the right shots when it came to the order that the movies are released, which actor will embody each iconic hero and even partnering with Disney. However, the success of a franchise this large is a team effort.

Supamodu envelope globe
Supamodu keeps protesting with Black Lives Matter.

And while we’re imagining a better world that can be achieved through equality and dismantling the oppressive systems, we also recall the world we saw when we could travel physically.

To be honest, the most desirable destination right now isSeattle’s Capital Hill Autonomous Zone.

We’re waiting to know more about the organizing efforts on the ground, labor opportunities, and more concrete stuff, but their art program already seems to be like something we could get behind.

Watching “Paris Is Burning†and listening to a flute player before bedtime? Yes, please.

But as we root for CHAZ and wait for more encouraging news from Seattle, let us explore some stories of crazy travels of which Supamodu has recently written.

Here is the itinerary:

There’s no better way to explore the world than through its sounds, and you know well that we’re big fans of musical ethnography, but only when it’s done inclusively and respectfully.Juan Wauters, an indie musician born in Uruguay and living in Queens, recently let us explore Central & South Americas through his collaborations with local musicians and adaptation of the regions’ best soundings. The album, “La Onda de Juan Pablo†is dreamy, but as all folk music, it’s also inextricable from the people’s struggles and even offers a worker’s hymn that would be a perfect fit for storming some government building—or even a castle.

Montevideo-born Queens-based artist takes his incomparable aesthetic for a spin in his native region, creating an album of enlightened simplicity with musicians scouted in Central & South America

As if we ever needed reminders of how much havoc capitalism wrought in the 20th century, Ã¢Â€ÂœMy Father the Banker†is an excellent primer on the so-called “Wild West capitalism†that swept Eastern European countries after the fall of Soviet Union. It’s also a fascinating and very personal story about a woman who has to go to an asylum in Malaysia to find out whether an older man in distress is indeed her estranged father. Now that’s not exactly a trip we wish we could have taken, but we were there along with director Ieva Ozoliņa for the ride.

A daughter’s search for her father who disappeared without a trace after enjoying a high roller life in the 90s becomes a window into the bizarre landscape of post-Soviet Latvia

Quite recently, we managed to travel to Bosnia while watching Dubioza Kolektiv’s Quarantine shows on YouTube. The name of their latest album, “#fakenews,†is timely as ever, as propaganda keeps overflowing real news from Seattle and the protests. Meanwhile, Dubioza Kolektiv themselves know a thing or two about setting up the righteous fire under the asses of those protesting: just look at this impressive Bosnian baba get her freak on to DK’s Balkan ska at an eco-protest against the building of a dam in beautiful Neretvica.

A Bosnian band with firm positions on civil rights and intellectual property and a fluid approach to genre has a song for every political issue you may care about

Have you noticed that whenever there is an occupy movement, or an autonomous zone established, music, film, literature, and art are always used to make the place feel more like home?

To build connections, spark dialogues, and invite change.

And this is why we do what we do. Maybe it’s not a physical space, but we want to think of Supamodu as a sort of autonomous zone, where everyone is equal, voices are multiple, and diversity is not a corporate scramble but the reality.

And one day we’ll travel there physically. We don’t know how, we don’t know when, but it will happen.

Come along.

Hope you enjoy Supamodu and feel compelled to forward this email to your friends.

Thank you for being with us! 💛

Dark Universe Movie Bride Of Frankenstein Still In Development

The Dark Universe movie Bride of Frankenstein is still in development. Right from its earliest days, Universal has been one of the most successful Hollywood studios. Part of this success can be attributed to decades worth of beloved monster movies.

Beginning in the 1920s and maintaining momentum well into the ’50s, not only did Universal’s unique takes on the likes of Dracula, Frankenstein and the Invisible Man (to name a few) captivate as well as frighten audiences, they also laid the foundation for monster movies the world over. Japan’s Toho Studios developed Godzilla, England’s Hammer Film Productions released titles such as Revenge of Frankenstein and The Abominable Snowman. Monster movies were big business, and in recent years, Universal decided that it wanted to explore those original titles once again. Unfortunately, The Dark Universe – a shared universe of resurrected and rebooted classic monster movie characters - came to an end after the Tom Cruise led The Mummy failed to kick things off in a big way, back in 2017. Universal’s key creatives on the project, Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan stepped away from the concept soon after The Mummy’s demise. Eventually, Universal decided to quietly drop their Dark Universe concept in favor of standalone monster movie reboots.

Related: Universal's Dark Universe Is Falling Apart

In other words, the Dark Universe may be dead, but Universal’s commitment to bringing back classic monsters for a new generation may not be. This was further emphasized recently by a conversation that Collider had with acclaimed screenwriter David Koepp. During the interview, Koepp explained he decided to revisit his script for The Bride of Frankenstein, while stuck at home due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Koepp claims he was able to bring the script into “a place where I kind of always wanted it to be” and credits Universal with being gracious enough to let him “try again” on a story that many had already moved on from:

“So I have a version now and they have a version that we all really like. I think they’re talking to directors now.”

Koepp also had further praise for Universal after the studio was faced with the reality of their Dark Universe concept not being the success they had anticipated:

“Not all ideas work out. To their credit, what I really admired about Universal is they threw their hands up and went, ‘Hold on. This isn’t working out. Let’s stop and think for a year or two.’ I thought that was really smart. And big corporations don’t often do that. There aren’t a lot of New Coke moments where they go, ‘This is not as we hoped. We’re going to stop and go off on this other direction.’”

The Bride of Frankenstein had been set up to be the next release after The Mummy, with casting rumors circulating for some time that Angelina Jolie would play the eponymous character. But of course, everything with the project seemed to unravel in the wake of Kurtzman and Morgan’s departure and the rather quiet death of the Dark Universe. However, the success of Blumhouse’s The Invisible Man has shown that audiences aren’t opposed to classic monster movie characters, and this pared-down new take on a well-known concept could be the model for The Bride of Frankenstein.

If Koepp is correct and Universal are currently talking to directors for The Bride of Frankenstein, it will be interesting to see who they ultimately settle on. The film has a lot of potential, especially now that Universal seems to have realized that it doesn’t have to wade into the Tom Cruise, high octane, massively budgeted realm to create something that audiences take to.

Matrix 4 Shifts to 2022 While Godzilla Vs. Kong Moves The Battle To May 2021

Warner Bros. is on a roll today with the release date changes. Soon after shifting Tenet by two weeks to July 31 and moving Wonder Woman 1984 from August 14 to October 2, the studio has announced that Matrix 4 and Godzilla Vs. Kong are making big release date changes as well.

Matrix 4, which halted production in Berlin back in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is shifting from May 21, 2021, to April 1, 2022. Production on the fourth film might start up again next month if all safety protocols are met but a film like this also has a lengthy post-production period due to special effects, which explains why the release date is moving nearly a year. The interesting thing about the release date change is now it will open one week after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which opens on March 25.

Godzilla Vs. Kong, which was set for release this year on November 20, will now take overMatrix 4‘s original May 21, 2021 date. Lionsgate currently has Spiral, itsSaw reboot starring Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, on that date. Spiral was another film that fell victim to the coronavirus pandemic as it was supposed to open May of this year.

All of these moves have caused quite the stir on the calendar for other films as well. Robert Zemeckis’ feature adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Witches is unset in 2021 for the time being, no longer going on October 9. Witches leaves behind 20th Century Studios’ Kenneth Branagh movie Death on the Nile and Paramount’s expansion of Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7. Also on the move is Warner Bros. cartoon action hybrid Tom & Jerry comes off December 23 and heads to March 5, 2021. Warner Bro. is also taking an untitled event movie off the October 16 calendar this year.

WB Delays Release Dates For ‘The Matrix 4’, ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’, ‘Tom & Jerry’ and More

the matrix 4 production

Warner Bros. decided to wait until the end of the week to wreak havoc on the industry’s release calendar, delaying Christopher Nolan’s Tenet by two weeks and bumping Wonder Woman 1984back to October. But the studio wasn’t done yet – later on Friday evening, they announced release date changes for The Matrix 4, Godzilla vs. Kong, Tom & Jerry, a New Line horror movie, and Robert Zemeckis’s The Witches. Find out the new dates below.

Let’s take these one by one, in order of what the initial release was supposed to be. Robert Zemeckis’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches, which was originally slated to arrive on October 9, 2020, has been removed from the studio’s release calendar entirely. Godzilla vs. Kong, which was supposed to arrive on November 20, 2020, has been bumped back to May 21, 2021. The studio’s new take onTom & Jerry, which was scheduled to be a big holiday player on December 23, 2020, will now arrive on March 5, 2021. Lana Wachowski‘s The Matrix 4 initially planned to jack audiences back in on May 21, 2021, but it has now been moved back by almost an entire year – it will hit theaters on April 1, 2022. And finally, an untitled New Line horror movie will now be released on June 4, 2021. Scott Mendelson over at Forbes suggests that this film could be James Wan’s Malignant, which makes the most sense of any guess I’ve heard so far.

While the coronavirus pandemic is very much still an ongoing danger, today marked the first day Hollywood could officially resume filming, and several of the major guilds released new production protocols to keep casts and crews safe. The pandemic’s effect on the industry has been enormous, to say the least, and 2021 is going to be an awfully crowded year at the box office as huge movies continue to shift back to that calendar year to give them the best chance of making the most money at the box office. Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if Tenet moved back again as its new July 31 release date approaches, but we’ll see how confident WB is feeling about peoples’ willingness to return to theaters. Currently, cases are spiking in several areas of the country, and many outlets are predicting a second wave of the virus may arrive in the fall. Stay safe out there, everyone.

In addition to delaying the fourth installment in the fan-favorite Wachowski-helmed franchise and Legendary’s MonsterVerse, Warner Bros. has also chosen to pull Robert Zemeckis’ adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches from its October 9 and has chosen to delay Tom & Jerry to March 5, 2021 from its original Christmas release date. With Tenet moving to the end of July and Wonder Woman leaving August, STX Films has elected to move the Gerard Butler-led actioner Greenland from its original July 31 release to August 14.

The epic action-adventure Godzilla vs Kong will pit two of the greatest icons in motion picture history against one another — the fearsome Godzilla and the mighty Kong — with humanity caught in the balance.

The film stars Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd (Big Little LiesThe Little Drummer Girl), Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Rebecca Hall (Christine, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women), Brian Tyree Henry (AtlantaWidows), Shun Oguri (Gintama), Eiza González (Baby Driver), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist), and Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2). Also starring in the highly-anticipated movie are Kyle Chandler (The Wolf of Wall StreetManchester by the Sea) and Demián Bichir (The Nun, The Hateful Eight).

The fourth installment in Warner Bros.’ Pictures and Legendary’s Monsterverse is directed by Adam Wingard from a script written by Oscar nominee Terry Rossio (Pirates of the CaribbeanDeja VuShrek). The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers, with Kenji Okuhira, Yoshimitsu Banno, Jon Jashni and Thomas Tull serving as executive producers. Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy and Tamara Kent are co-producers.

The most recent film in Legendary’s MonsterVerseGodzilla: King of the Monsters, hit theaters last summer. It ended with Godzilla taking his rightful place as the ruler of all Titans. Unfortunately, the movie was a financial disappointment, grossing only $385.9 million against a budget estimated to be as high as $200 million.

Godzilla vs. Kong is scheduled to release on May 21, 2021.

Lana Wachowski co-wrote the script for The Matrix 4 with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell, and will direct the film as well. Academy-Award winning cinematographer John Toll (Legends of the FallBraveheart) will shoot the highly-anticipated sequel, succeeding Bill Pope who was the cinematographer for The Matrix trilogy.

Plot details on the fourth live-action film in The Matrix franchise haven’t been revealed, and given the ending of 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions it’s not a clear cut answer.

Earlier this year we asked our readers if they were interested in more movies in the series, with 69% of those voting saying “Yes!†In a secondary poll, 58% said they wanted to see a continuation of the series. Looks like they’ll be getting what they wanted!

The Matrix Revolutions was also the first film ever to release simultaneously in every major country at the same hour around the world.

The Matrix 4 is scheduled for an April 1, 2022 release.

Fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big-screen adventure finds her facing an all-new foe: The Cheetah. As previously announced, the film stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Kristen Wiig in the role of the Super-Villain The Cheetah, as well as Pedro Pascal. Chris Pine also returns as Steve Trevor.

Patty Jenkins (Wonder WomanMonster) returns to direct the sequel, while Jenkins, Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Stephen Jones, and Gal Gadot are producing the film. Rebecca Roven Oakley, Richard Suckle, Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns, and Walter Hamada are the executive producers.

TV Bits: ‘Star Trek: Picard’, ‘Promised Neverland’, ‘Harlots’, and More

Star Trek Picard Jeri Ryan Patrick Stewart

In this edition of TV Bits:

  • Sir Patrick Stewart talks about the second season of Star Trek: Picard
  • The Hulu series Harlots has been cancelled
  • Netflix has taken down four shows overseas after racial controversies
  • A streaming adaptation of the manga series Promised Neverland is being developed for Amazon Prime Video.
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finds at least one director, and he’s a familiar face in the Trek universe
  • One Day at a Time is getting an animated special next week, and you can see the first look here

Star Trek Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the newly-announced spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, will have a familiar face behind the camera: Jonathan Frakes, who played William T. Riker on The Next Generation and has directed more StarTrek series than anyone else. (He also has two Trek movies under his belt.) Speaking with SyFy Wire, he talked about his interactions with the cast of Strange New Worlds:

“I’ve had great experiences with all three of them. Anson [Mount] and I worked through finding Captain Pike. And Ethan [Peck] and I worked through finding who Spock was. And the mantle of Spock, in particular, was so complicated and so emotionally taxing and was such huge shoes to fill, and Ethan felt it. Rebecca [Romijn] and I have a long relationship from back onThe Librarians, and we have a fabulous working shorthand, so it will be great getting back to the floor with three old friends.â€Â

Watch Star Trek: PIcard for Free

Speaking of Trek, let’s check in on Patrick Stewart, who’s back in the spotlight with Star Trek: Picard. In a recent discussion with LA Times’ The Envelope, Stewart spoke about how the dynamic behind the scenes will alter the second season:

“There was no socializing [between the actors] for the first five months — we were shooting. When we came to the end of the [season], we had promotional activities to engage with and we were traveling together on airplanes and got to know one another so much better. This is going to be a new element in Season 2, that there is a lot of mutual respect everywhere. If you know you can take risks, and there is a network around you that if you crash land, they will catch you, it’s a wonderful feeling. That’s how I feel now. I feel safe.â€Â

Jonah from Tonga

As protests supporting Black Lives Matter continue across the globe, Netflix has quietly removed four shows by Australian comedian Chris Lilley from its Australia and New Zealand services. The streaming platform has not commented on why, but Deadline says it’s because the four shows – Angry Boys, Summer Heights High, We Can Be Heroes, and Jonah From Tonga – “featur[e] characters that have in the past sparked questions over racial discrimination,†including Lilley wearing blackface. Additionally, Netflix has also removed British comedy The League of Gentlemen from its library after it featured the blackface character Papa Lazarou. This is obviously a topic that sparks a lot of discussion, and it should be interesting to see exactly where Netflix draws the line. Is this part of a wave of removals yet to come?

Harlots Reprisal

Hulu has officially cancelled its period drama Harlots, which ran for three seasons and the revenge series Reprisal, which only ran for one.

Promised Neverland

Heroes‘ Masi Oka and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse co-writer/co-director Rodney Rothman are teaming up to executive produce a Promised Neverland series adaptation of the popular manga for Amazon Prime Video. Meghan Malloy (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) is writing the pilot, which centers on a group of kids who discover their orphanage is harboring a dark secret – so they plan to bust out.

And finally, here’s the first look at next week’s animated episode of the heartwarming family sitcom One Day at a Time, which is titled “The Politics Episode†and premieres on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 on Pop TV at 9:30 P.M. ET/PT. Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda is lending his voice to a character in a guest role for the first time, and guests Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and singer Gloria Estefan will be a part of this episode as well.

Doom Patrol Season 2 Trailer Reintroduces Us To The Wacky Group Of Heroes

Last I checked, Doom Patrol was supposed to be a DC Universe original series. Well at least it was for its first season. Now we are two weeks away from the debut of season two. As marketing for the series has begun to kick it in high gear, there is one notable difference.

Pulp Fiction: 14 Mia Wallace Quotes That Will Make You Think

Quentin Tarantino and Uma Thurman will go down in film history as one of the greatest pairings of an actor and a director of all time. Their collaborations are limited to Pulp Fiction and both volumes of Kill Bill, but that was enough to solidify their lasting legacy.

RELATED:9 Pulp Fiction Quotes Everybody Gets Wrong

In Pulp Fiction, Thurman’s character Mia Wallace subverted the trope of the mob wife from a million other crime stories by giving us an articulate drug addict who could both weave thought-provoking monologues and overdose on heroin, breathing new life into a stale and overdone stock character. Here are 10 Mia Wallace Quotes That Will Make You Think.

Updated on June 11th, 2020 by Ben Sherlock: Uma Thurman has played a ton of different characters since her star-making turn in Pulp Fiction, but Mia Wallace is arguably still her most memorable role. The character’s verbose dialogue was perfectly suited to Thurman’s articulate delivery style, while she had more than enough genuine coolness to make Mia’s own coolness more than just an act. She remains a beloved icon of the silver screen. So, we’ve updated this list with a handful of new entries.

14 “In Conversation, Do You Listen Or Wait To Talk?â€

This line is actually from a deleted scene, but it’s a shame it got cut, because it’s one of Mia’s most thoughtful quotes. When people engage in conversation, they either take in what the other person is saying and use it as a springboard to provoke a deeper discussion, or they simply wait for that person to shut up so they can say what’s on their mind.

Mia asks Vincent, “In conversation, do you listen or wait to talk?†to which Vincent replies, “I have to admit that I wait to talk, but I’m trying harder to listen.â€

13 “When You Little Scamps Get Together, You’re Worse Than A Sewing Circle.â€

When Vincent tells Mia about a rumor he heard about her, she tells him that him and his “little scamp†friends – in other words, the contract killers that work for her mob boss husband – are “worse than a sewing circle.†It's an endearingly comical take on Vincent's profession, but it also serves as a stark reminder that people in his line of work are day-to-day encounters when you're the wife of Marsellus Wallace.

12 “I Want That Trophy, So Dance Good.â€

When Mia and Vincent are eating at Jack Rabbit Slim’s and the emcee announces the restaurant’s world-famous dance contest, Mia decides she wants to take part in the contest – and she wants to win. Winning a dance contest boils down to dancing good to win a trophy.

Mia sums it up perfectly: “I do believe Marsellus Wallace, my husband, your boss, told you to take me out and do whatever I wanted. Now, I wanna dance, I wanna win. I want that trophy, so dance good.â€

11 “Through No Fault Of My Own, I Would Have Broken My Promise.â€

When Vincent has something to tell Mia, he tells her to promise that she won’t get offended. However, she explains that she can’t make such a promise.

She says, “You can’t promise something like that. I have no idea what you’re going to ask me. So, you can go ahead and ask me what you’re going to ask me, and my natural response could be to get offended. Then, through no fault of my own, I would have broken my promise.â€

10 “That’s when you know you’ve found somebody really special: you can just shut the f*** up for a minute and comfortably share silence.â€

There’s a lot of tension between Vincent Vega and Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction. In a lesser movie, they would fall in love over the course of the night and kiss when Vincent dropped Mia off back at home at the end of their pseudo-date. But it’s not a lesser movie; it’s Pulp Fiction.

Instead of getting together, their connection is left unspoken, unless one counts Mia Wallace quotes like the one above. They know they have something pretty special, but they also know they’ll never be able to act on it. Mia will go on married to Marsellus and Vincent will go on without getting thrown out of a fourth-story window.

9 “Don’t be a... *draws square*â€

Some fans have pointed out that Mia Wallace actually draws a rectangle in the air and not a square, despite the fact that she’s telling Vincent not to be a square. But that just adds to the quirkiness of the moment. It’s odd for a Tarantino movie to add something over the frame like an animated square appearing at Uma Thurman’s fingertips, but for whatever reason, it works, leading to one of the better Mia Wallace quotes.

Pulp Fiction is an exercise in postmodernism, and so when something pops up to remind us that this is just a movie, it works. We’re not supposed to believe that this is real life. It’s a very cinematic experience.

8 “Three tomatoes are walking down the street...â€

Thanks to Pulp Fiction, a lot of moviegoers are familiar with the TV production process. Mia Wallace explains that she once appeared in a TV pilot called Fox Force Five (a pilot being the first episode of a show that is used to determine if it’s worth making into a series).

Her character was supposed to tell a corny joke in every episode, but they only did one episode, so she only ever got to tell one joke, leading to an excellent Mia Wallace quote: “Three tomatoes are walking down the street: a papa tomato, a momma tomato, and a little baby tomato. Baby tomato starts lagging behind. Papa tomato gets angry, goes over to the baby tomato, and smushes him...and says, ‘Catch up.’â€

7 “Trying to forget anything as intriguing as this would be an exercise in futility.â€

When Vincent tells Mia Wallace that he has something to tell her, she wants to know what it is. But then he changes his mind about telling her and just tells her to forget it.However, as she tells him, once he’s introduced the notion that he has something tantalizing to tell her, it’s impossible for her to just forget about it.

She knows there’s a deep, dark secret to be told, and she won’t be able to let it go until she’s told what that is. We can all relate to this Mia Wallace quote, since we’ve all been in similar situations.

6 “I have to go powder my nose.â€Â

Pulp Fiction was controversial for a lot of things: its violence, its language, its subversions of genre conventions. One of those controversial elements was the drug use, but drug use is never glamorized by the movie. It’s shown to be very dangerous, since Mia Wallace overdoses on heroin and almost dies.

It’s also shown to be destructive, as Mia nips to the bathroom to “powder her nose,†which turns out to be a euphemism for taking cocaine, and one of the sadder Mia Wallace quotes. She can’t even get through dinner without taking a bump. The movie doesn’t make this look cool or hip – it’s a suitably cautionary tale.

5 “Don’t you just love it when you come back from the bathroom and find your food waiting for you?â€Â

We can all relate to this Mia Wallace quote. We’ve all been in restaurants or diners and gone to the bathroom in the long, painful wait between ordering from the menu and actually having a plate of food placed in front of you, only to return to your table to find that the food has been delivered while you were gone.

It’s one of those everyday situations that is universally identifiable, yet is so mundane that it rarely gets a mention in movies and TV shows. Tarantino was reportedly heavily inspired by Seinfeld in the writing of Pulp Fiction, and the main influence was likely the characters’ conversations about nothing.

4 “If you’re all right, then say something.†“Something.â€Â

One of the most thrilling and breathtaking sequences in Pulp Fiction is the one where Mia Wallace snorts some of Vincent’s heroin, mistaking it for cocaine, and starts to overdose. Vincent panics, because it’s his boss’ wife, and if she dies, he dies. So, he gets her into his car and rushes her over to his drug dealer Lance’s house to get her an adrenaline shot.

Tarantino was reportedly considering playing Lance himself, but settled for the role of Jimmie, because he realized he wanted to be behind the camera for the O.D. scene. When she awakens from the adrenaline shot, Lance says, “If you’re all right, then say something,†and Mia jokingly says, “Something.†There are few better Mia Wallace quotes.

3 “Uncomfortable silences. Why do we feel it’s necessary to yak about bulls*** in order to be comfortable?â€Â

Mia is right on the money about this one. When we’re sitting with a person we don’t know very well, we always feel the need to make conversation with them. And since we don’t know them very well, that conversation is guaranteed to be small-talk: the worst, most pointless form of conversation.

RELATED: Pulp Fiction is Reddit r/Movies' Favorite Film of All Time

As this Mia Wallace quote points out, we’ve all decided as a species that silences are uncomfortable when we’re in the company of a vaguely familiar acquaintance, but they don’t have to be. And as long as that acquaintance is someone like Mia Wallace, the silences don’t have to be uncomfortable, because they’ll point this out.

2 “The only thing Antoine ever touched of mine was my hand, when he shook it, at my wedding.â€Â

The running storyline about why Marsellus threw Tony Rocky Horror from a fourth-floor window is an interesting one, and it doesn’t get fully explained. We get some vague ideas about it based on hearsay and not much else. Even Mia Wallace doesn’t have the full story. She just confirms that what Vincent heard about the foot rub, the rumor that made him terrified to take her out for dinner, is just a rumor.

She even points out that he should’ve been able to tell that from how unreasonable it sounds. The fact it’s never resolved, with Mia saying it’s between Marsellus and Tony Rocky Horror and them alone, adds to the mystique of the movie, and creates a memorable Mia Wallace quote.

1 “This doesn’t sound like the usual mindless, boring, getting-to-know-you chit-chat. This sounds like you have something to say.â€Â

Mia Wallace’s defining characteristic is that she refuses to fall for all of society’s traps. Banal chit-chat is just a symptom of social convention and Mia realizes that and rejects it.

This is a common theme in Tarantino’s oeuvre, starting with the very first scene of his very first film in which the Reservoir Dogs gangsters are eating breakfast in a diner and Steve Buscemi’s Mr. Pink starts protesting automated tipping like he’s Larry David. When Mia realizes that something actually needs to be said, she’s excited, because it gives her a break from the mundanity of the social norms, and offers her a chance to make a Mia Wallace quote worthy of this list.
