EXCLUSIVE: Rakul Preet Singh reflects on her tryst visiting a male gynaecologist; says, “As a teenager, I was shy to visit a male gynaecologist”

Rakul Preet Singh and Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer Doctor G was about a male doctor who was eager to go into orthopaedics but ended up becoming a gynaecologist, which leads to chaos. This Anubhuti Kashyap directed film released on October 14, 2022.

Sharing her personal experience of visiting male gynaecologist during the Bollywood Hungama Best Actress Round Table 2022 presented by Astroyogi, Rakul said, “Long ago, the first time I ever went to a gynaecologist, it happened to be male. I had no experience on how or what it would be. I was shy being a teenager. However, I had my mother, so it was fine. Eventually I forgot about it. It was not a thought that stayed on with me. I evolved and grew as a person, and at a certain point I don’t know when my mind adapted to it”.

Further relating her experience with the film, she said, “During Doctor G, I realized that it is actually not the case with so many people. I questioned what was wrong with it, as it is a human anatomy. You would go to an eye surgeon, but not to a male gynaecologist. I think it should be your credibility as a doctor, which should be accounted for more as opposed to the gender you are. I think that is why Doctor G was such an important film to me as for them (male gynaecologists), it is just a physical aspect of your body.”

Highlighting the importance of this matter, Rakul further added, “God forbid, if tomorrow you have to go for a heart check-up or a surgery; you cannot decide if a male would do it for you or a female. Which is why I think it is a conversation that is supposed to start”.

Not everyone has normalized it, as not everyone can be comfortable with a male gynaecologist, to which Rakul replied, “It is because of this reason there are some ethics and rules to appoint female attendance if there is a male gynaecologist treating a female patient”.

In a roundtable interview with Pinkvilla, Jasmeet revealed that “Shah Rukh Khan “had a very interesting input.” She continued, “He said, ‘Hamza joh hain, second half mein usko chhodna mat (Don’t let Hamza go in the second half)’.”

While they weren’t planning to, after SRK’s input, Hamza had a lot more to do. “Obviously, we were not going to let him go but because the humour was just coming out of him being there, tied up or cracking a line. He said ‘chhodna mat (don’t let him go). Ismein humour aa sakta hain (This can be humourous) and please cast someone who can do this.’ I think that was an important input because obviously we added a lot more Hamza after that. On a macro level, that worked,” she said.

The Red Chillies Entertainment and Eternal Sunshine Production’s film Darlings is a dark comedy that explores the lives of a mother-daughter duo trying to find their place in Mumbai seeking courage and love in exceptional circumstances fighting against all odds. The film stars Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma, and Roshan Mathew and is directed by Jasmeet K Reen.

EXCLUSIVE: Bhumi Pednekar on pay parity in Bollywood: ‘If the budget is Rs. 125 crore, the males get a good two-digit figure but then they want me to be thankful’

Bhumi Pednekar, Tamannaah Bhatia were amongst the actresses who were in attendance along with Rakul Preet Singh, Alaya F and Huma Qureshi. EXCLUSIVE: Bhumi Pednekar on pay parity in Bollywood: ‘If the budget is Rs. 125 crore, the males get a good two-digit figure but then they want me to be thankful’

Speaking at the Bollywood Hungama Actresses Round Table 2022 presented by Astroyogi, Tammanaah Bhatia said that women have to build a strong market for themselves to move ahead whereas Rakul Preet Singh noted that they is still a long road ahead in terms of pay parity. Bhumi Pednekar then said, “I could have as many Rs. 100 or Rs. 200 crore films as my male co-star. I may be appreciated for my work but it’s a norm that I will not be paid as close to what he is being paid”. She added that the change has to come from every corner.

She further said, “The disparity was also in the west but the men there stood up for women. They said either they will take a pay cut or get them the same remuneration. And while I don’t want anyone to stand up for me, there has to be empathy. One needs to acknowledge the issue.”

However, Huma Qureshi said that male actors have created a market for themselves over the years. “But we should also understand that the males have created a market over years. We cannot pitch 10 female films with the 100s they have,” she said.

Adding further, Bhumi said, “If the budget is Rs. 125 crore, the males get a good two-digit figure but then they want me to be thankful. You have come to me because I add a certain amount of credibility but they always make it sound like an opportunity.” Rakul Preet Singh said that it is because the actresses are replaceable in the movies.

On the work front, Bhumi Pednekar starred in two movies this year – Badhaai Do and Govinda Naam Mera. Bhumi will now be seen in films like Anubhav Sinha’s Bheed, Ajay Bahl’s The Ladykiller, Sudhir Mishra’s Afwaah, Gauri Khan produced Bhakshak, Mudassar Aziz’s Mere Husband Ki Biwi and a couple of more unannounced projects that will push the bar for cinema.

EXCLUSIVE: Tamannaah Bhatia says male actors are more uncomfortable during intimate scenes; Bhumi Pednekar recalls being extremely ‘nervous’ during full throttle scene in Lust Stories

Bollywood Hungama hosted its roundtable with actresses who made a mark in 2022 in films. Bhumi Pednekar, Tamannaah Bhatia were amongst the actresses who were in attendance along with Rakul Preet Singh, Alaya F and Huma Qureshi. The actresses spoke about several aspects of their careers including the importance of having intimacy coordinators on sets. In the past few years, intimacy coaches have become an important part of the shoot to take the actors through the process smoothly.

EXCLUSIVE: Tamannaah Bhatia says male actors are more uncomfortable during intimate scenes; Bhumi Pednekar recalls being extremely ‘nervous’ during full throttle scene in Lust Stories

Speaking at the Bollywood Hungama Actresses Round Table 2022 presented by Astroyogi, Huma Qureshi noted that there is a sense of discomfort and nervousness before an intimate scene shoot. However, Tamannaah Bhatia said that male actors are more awkward than female ones. She said, “I have seen more men being uncomfortable or being awkward with intimate scenes. It’s basically about understanding that actors are just human, it’s not about men or women. Sometimes guys are a lot more shy and they’re a lot more worried about how the woman is going to feel in that equation. I have seen the guy seems more worried than I do.”

During the same conversation when told that media would be invited to the sets of the films when such scenes were being shot back in the day, a shocked Bhumi responded by saying, “That is so exploitative.” Rakul Preet Singh mentioned how these scenes are so ‘mechanical’ and there are times when she counts the seconds in her head during the kissing scenes.

Bhumi Pednekar recalled the ‘full throttle’ scene with Neil Bhoopalam in Lust Stories in 2018. She told Bollywood Hungama, “When I did Lust Stories, I was nervous. It was a ‘full throttle’ orgasm but at that time, for me intimacy coordinator, we didn’t have that. But, Zoya, with the sensitivity with which she took me and Neil through it, because as she said, it is not about ‘you are a girl and you should feel comfortable when a male co-star needs to’. But, I was nervous because this is the most naked I can be in the room full of people. I barely had any clothes on and we have protection and technically done but still, between Neil and I, we had to sit down and say that these are our boundaries. Just that conversation between your director, you and your co-actor was so important because you are in a moment and it’s no different.”

Bhumi Pednekar starred in two movies this year – Badhaai Do and Govinda Naam Mera. Tamannaah Bhatia was seen in Babli Bouncer and Plan A Plan B.
