Miles Morales Shows Up On The Brooklyn Bridge For Black Lives Matter Protest

A young man in NYC showed up to a protest on the Brooklyn Bridge as Miles Morales, the first black/Latino Spider-Man, empowering fellow protestors. After the police murdered George Floyd on May 25, 2020, the world has been rocked by massive protests demanding a stop to the racial injustice and police brutality currently plaguing the U.S.There has been widespread support, with many influential creators and businesses partaking in the protests. John Boyega, star of the most recentStar Wars trilogy, spoke out and joined the London Black Lives Matter protests, willing to face any backlash from Hollywood. Much of the Star Wars community, including Mark Hamill and J.J. Abrams, voiced their full support for Boyega. Abrams also donated $10 million to various organizations, to be dispersed over the next five years, including Black Futures Lab, Equal Justice Initiative, and Know Your Rights Camp.

In the spirit of equality and community, many people have brought their personal fictional heroes to the movement, like Spider-Man and Batman, dressing up as them and joining the activists. It comes as no surprise that Morales has shown up in Brooklyn, a character who first appeared in Marvel Comics in 2011 and calls Brooklyn home. In the comics, the young, Afro-Latino teenager takes on the mantle of Spider-Man after Peter Parker dies. With his background and positive, hopeful attitude, Morales is the perfect modern role model. The character is also the lead of the 2018 Academy Award-winning film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Journalist Walker Bragman posted photos of the young protestor standing on the bridge on his twitter, and he is continually updating his page as the protests continue. Phil Lord, the co-writer and executive producer of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, retweeted the post on his page, along with plenty of hand-clapping emojis.

Lord is part of a creative team with Chris Miller, and together they have directed, written, and produced quite a few films, including The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street. Next up, they will direct Ryan Gosling in an astronaut film based on the next book by Andy Weir (The Martian). Sony's greenlit a Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, with a current release date of October 7, 2022. There has also been talk of a possible Gwen Stacy spin-off, though it's currently unclear if that is going forward.

The Black Lives Matter movement was founded in 2013 after George Zimmerman was acquitted for shooting and killing Trayvon Martin in February 2012. The public outrage spawned the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter, and Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi founded the activist organization. The movement has continued to grow over the years, mainly through the protests in Ferguson after Michael Brown's death, and after Eric Garner was killed by police in NYC. The George Floyd demonstrations have continued for 12 days so far, and researchers say that they are the broadest protests in U.S. history. If Miles Morales were real, he would undoubtedly be marching in his hometown alongside fellow protestors, fighting against racial injustice.

Young Spider-Man Fan Becomes Real Wall Crawler Thanks To Dad's Photoshop

One youngSpider-Manfan recently got a treat, as his dad used photoshop to make it look like he was actually climbing the walls in his home. Spider-Man, while always a popular comics character, has seen a resurgence in recent years. A key moment came when Tom Holland was cast as the webslinger in Captain America: Civil War, taking over the role from Andrew Garfield. Fans and critics alike praised Holland's performance, which also marked Spider-Man's first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanks to a deal with Sony, Holland has also starred in two acclaimed solo films, with a third one on the way. He'll also return for at least one more appearance in the MCU, thanks to a new agreement between the two studios.

Spider-Man fans were also recently impressed by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, an animated take on the Miles Morales Spider-Man. Both its animation style and storytelling were celebrated, with the movie even winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. Though Miles is the movie's protagonist, it also features several other Spider-characters, including Peter B. Parker, Gwen Stacy, and Spider-Man Noir. There's already a sequel set for 2022, with a female-led spinoff in the works as well. That movie will feature Gwen, as well as Cindy Moon/Silk and Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman. Unfortunately, star Hailee Steinfeld said recently she hasn't been updated on the project in awhile.

Considering the popularity of Spider-Man right now, it makes sense kids want to look like the famed webslinger. This week, Twitter user Positive Jerry shared two photos of his son dressed as Spider-Man. However, there was a fun twist, as he explained he held his son up in different positions and then used photoshop to take himself out of the pictures. As a result, his son appears to be actually climbing on the wall and ceiling:

The real-life wall crawler looks to be wearing the Miles Morales version of a Spider-Man costume, featuring the darker suit with red accents. In many ways, Miles is the Spider-Man for a younger generation, with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse a great way to introduce kids to the character. It also helps that it stood on its own, without needing the background knowledge most superhero films require these days. As the very first animated Spider-Man feature film, it makes sense Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse continues to resonate with fans over a year after its release.

This is also the sort of heartwarming story many need right now, which explains why the photos have blown up on Twitter. Some people commenting even joked he surely had to be the real Spider-Man, as the pictures looked too realistic. All told, one dad's photoshop skills not only made his kid happy, but also managed to impress the collective Twitter-verse.

Casino Royale: Why James Bond 21 DIDN'T Recast Judi Dench's M

Dame Judi Dench is the only actor who wasn't recast when the James Bond movies rebooted with Casino Royale in 2006. While there is no official reason given by the producers for why Dench was invited to return as M, 007's spymaster, Dench's popularity is a major factor as to why she reprisedthe role after the Pierce Brosnan Bond movies ran their course.

Dench's tenure in the James Bond franchise is truly impressive; she has appeared in eight movies (including a video cameo in Spectre), whichmeans the award-winning actress has played M more times than any James Bond actor has played 007. Further, Dench played M for 20 years from 1995's GoldenEye to 2015's Spectre, which far surpasses even Daniel Craig's record-setting 14-year run as James Bond. There is also a rumor Dench will cameo in No Time To Die, which would further add to her impressive record. Dench was the first and only woman to portray M, although Dench herself shot down the belief that her casting was a nod to the real-life nomination of Stella Rimington as the head of MI5.

Related: Every James Bond Movie In Chronological Order

From her inaugural appearance as M in GoldenEye, Dench won over audiences as James Bond's hard-nosed boss, especially when she asserted Brosnan's 007 as "a sexist, misogynist dinosaur, a relic of the Cold War whose boyish charms [are] wasted on me." It's not surprising that the runaway success of Dench's M was something Bond's producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, wanted to maintain, especially given the initial controversy over Daniel Craig being cast as 007 in Casino Royale. Considering the uncertainty of whether audiences would accept not just the new Bond but a total reboot of the films, Bond's producers and Casino Royale's director, Martin Campbell, wisely decided not also replace someone as talented and beloved as Judi Dench. They correctly gambled that the popular M's familiar face would help fans accept the new Bond.

In the Brosnan 007 movies, Dench's M struck fear into her subordinates and was derisively known as "the evil queen of numbers." Yet M was also a wife and parent; she was compassionate almost to a fault, which Elektra King (Sophie Marceau) used against her in The World Is Not Enough. However, just as Craig's Bond is a different incarnation of 007 than his predecessors - every actor from Sean Connery's original to Pierce Brosnan portrayed the same 007 - Dench actually played two versions of M between the Brosnan films and the rebooted Craig continuity.

The M that Daniel Craig's younger James Bond took his orders from had no prior history with (or disdain for) the new 007, and their relationship was very different. M behaved more like a "surrogate mother" to Craig's Bond, and that respect and affection was mutual; in Skyfall, Bond took it upon himself to personally protect M from the villainous Silva (Javier Bardem), and he was crushed when M died at the end of the film, which also made Dench the only M to be killed in a Bond movie. When M posthumously left Bond her porcelain Union Jack bulldog, it was revealed that her name was Olivia Mansfield, whereas in the screenplay and novelization for GoldenEye, M's name was Barbara Mawdsley.

Ralph Fiennes became the new M at the conclusion of Skyfall, but for an entire generation of James Bond fans, Judi Dench's M is the gold standard and is dearly missed as 007's boss. There's no denying that Dench's M is a vital part of the Bond franchise. In hindsight, the Bond producers' retaining Judi Dench's services in Casino Royale was an ingenious decision and her M proved to be the bridge that helped ensure a smooth transition between the original 007 continuity and the even greater success enjoyed by Daniel Craig as James Bond.
