The Walking Dead: 15 Most Hated Supporting Characters

Through 10 seasons, few shows on television have introducedand killed so many characters over its lifetime than The Walking Dead. Since the start of the show, there are only a couple of major survivors left from the large cast of characters that fans fell in love with. Also, along the way, there have been several characters that joined the cast to varying degrees of fan enjoyment.

Thankfully, for every new supporting character you hate, there is a good chance that they will die sooner rather than later. Whether they die in a way that pays off their defects or it ends up in a tragic death that makes some fans feel bad for hating them, they all go to look at the flowers in one way or the other. Here is a look at the 10 most hated characters in The Walking Dead's 10-year run.

Updated June 14, 2020, by Shawn S. Lealos: The Walking Dead had to wrap up its 10th season early due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down production. The wait for Season 11 will possibly be a long one, so fans have plenty of time to watch old episodes and debate the characters introduced throughout the years. Some of these characters are more beloved than others, while others are hated immensely by the fans. One has to hope that the next season presents a few more of these characters that fans love to see die horribly during the zombie apocalypse.

15 AIDEN MONROE

Aiden Monroe was part of the Alexandria community when Rick and his survivors showed up. Along with his brother, Aiden was a jerk who never wanted these new survivors to come in, and while their fears were correct that Rick and the group planned to take over, these brothers went about it the wrong way. Neither Aiden nor his buddy Nicholas knew how to deal with The Walkers anyway, and their mistakes cost lives in the end.

14 BOB STOOKEY

Bob Stookey was someone who came around with fans by the time he died. That was a great moment where he was able to let Terminus know that he was bitten and infected while the cannibals were eating his leg. His death was sad, but for most of his life, fans were not Team Bob. He was a liability, and his drinking problems put everyone in danger due to his ineptitude. He was also not a team player, and his death made the group stronger in the end.

13 MILTON

The Governor on the AMC series was much better than the comic book version. While the Governor in the comics was a sociopath and a real villain, he was a lot more well-rounded in the TV series. However, his right-hand man Milton was not someone that fans bought into. He was the scientist who was trying to figure out what the risen dead were really about, but he ended up as a wishy-washy character to the end when he finally killed Andrea.

12 RICHARD

Negan was deadly, and even when he left, the Saviors remained a thorn in the side of the survivors afterward. On the TV show, there was one man in the group that heightened the tensions between the two groups, and that was Richard. He wanted to take the battle to the Saviors, and he thought he should be a martyr to the cause. Richard even failed at his goal of being a martyr, and Morgan ended up killing him to stop any further deaths.

11 ENID

While the heads on a pike in The Walking Dead comics were tragic and shook up fans when it went down, the version the AMC show revealed was nowhere near as effective. That is because the people who died were not characters the fans were really invested in. Enid was one of those. While she had a nice introduction on the show when her parents died, she went downhill quickly. She turned into a love interest and put beloved survivors at risk one too many times for fans to accept her into the group.

10 SAM ANDERSON

Sam Anderson was one of the many kids who showed up on The Walking Dead that fans wanted to see gone. His mother was Jessie, who became a love interest for a short time for Rick Grimes. Sadly, Carol was partially responsible for turning Sam into the kid no one liked when she scared him into keeping quiet about her gun if he wanted to live.

After this, Sam went into a very dark place and became scared of everything. The moment that Rick tried to save Sam's family, but he wouldn't shut up in the middle of a zombie herd, was the moment that he ended up dying and taking his family with him. Plus, his brother shot Carl in the eye.

9 LORI GRIMES

When Rick Grimes woke up from his coma in the first episode, his only goal was to find his wife Lori and son Carl. He set out, and fans anxiously wanted to see him reunited with his family. He found them with his best friend Shane, and Lori had already moved on with him until Rick showed up, and she changed her mind.

However, after this, Lori became the generic nagging wife, never understanding that Rick was trying his hardest to keep everyone alive and do what he could to protect everyone, including her and Carl. She complained so much that fans didn't mind when she died giving birth to Judith.

8 LIZZIE

Lizzie is the second child on this list, and she is an extraordinary case. Carol had lost her own family, and now she was playing mother with Lizzie and her sister Mika. However, as the show moved on, she became very annoying, especially since she was the voice that tried to tell everyone that people were probably dead when they were just late returning.

Her pessimistic attitude took a startling turn when she started to identify with the zombies more than real humans. She wanted the survivors to stop killing zombies and tried to prove it by killing her 10-year-old sister to show that not all zombies were evil. Carol ended up taking her out to see the flowers and putting a bullet in her head to save fans from having to see her anymore.

7 ANDREA

There were two characters in the comic books that switched places on the TV show. In the comics, Carol was a clingy and emotionally stunted woman who took her own life, while Andrea was tough as nails and lasted longer than almost anyone, even hooking up with Rick. On the TV show, it was Andrea that was a mess.

RELATED: The Walking Dead: 5 Early Episodes That Hooked Fans In (& 5 Late Ones That Turned Them Off)

Andrea always wanted to die, and when people kept saving her, it prolonged the pain fans had, watching her on the show. She finally took her own life while a prisoner to The Governor and the pain finally ended.

6 SPENCER MONROE

There are several Walking Dead supporting characters on this list from the Alexandria community. It is almost sad since they were a safe, self-sufficient community until Rick Grimes and company showed up and decided to take over for themselves. One person who took it badly was Spencer Monroe, whose parents were initially the leaders.

The reason most people hated Spencer was that he was a coward who had everything handed to him. He hated the idea of having to work under someone when Rick showed up and made life hard for everyone. Even Negan had no time for Spencer and killed him in the streets.

5 JARED

Jared showed up in season 7 as part of the Saviors. While he was not a top guy through much of his time on the show, he started to rub viewers the wrong way thanks to his personality. Out of all the Saviors, Jared was the biggest bully and just wanted to antagonize and hurt people.

Negan had morals somewhat, but Jared was just pure evil. Jared was taken prisoner after the war, but while some wanted just to live, he kept on pushing buttons and wouldn't stop, even when in a cage. Morgan finally trapped Jared in a hall with Walkers, and his death was very satisfying for fans.

4 NICHOLAS

Nicholas was a coward, and fans of The Walking Dead hated him because he was just about worthless. He was the right-hand to Spencer but was even more cowardly than his friend. This made the fact that they worked on scavenger teams laughable.

RELATED: TWD: 5 Characters Who We Hope Never Get Killed Off (& 5 We Would Be Fine With Seeing Gone)

He caused the death of Will and Noah. He almost caused Glenn to die on a trash dumpster when Nicholas shot himself in the head, knocking Glenn into the herd. He served no purpose other than making everyone else's lives harder.

3 SIMON

Simon was a great bad guy, and unlike many people on this list, Walking Dead fans loved to hate him. His minion in the Saviors, Jared, was someone no one liked, and people just despised. When it came to Negan, there were just as many people who loved him as hated him.

However, for Simon, he played the bad guy role perfectly. He wasn't the cool bad guy like Negan. He was a jerk that caused problems and did what he needed to remain on top. Fans hated him, but in a good way.

2 BETH GREENE

Beth Greene was a strange case. For many years, fans hated her with a passion. There was nothing about her that was interesting or worthwhile, and she seemed to be more trouble than she was worth. Look online at the time, and fans wanted her dead.

When Beth died at the hospital, a moment that devastated Daryl, fans suddenly spoke up and hated the fact she was gone. Beth was a Walking Dead character fans hated but then claimed to love after her death.

1 GREGORY

If there is one supporting character that Walking Dead fans hated more than any other, it was Gregory. He lived in the biggest, nicest house in the Hilltop and served as their leader, while his people worked hard and lived the best they could. When Rick and company showed up, he was immediately antagonistic.

He was a gutless coward and betrayed them to Negan. He was a devious backstabber and tried to have Maggie killed. Everything he did was for his own well-being, and when Maggie had him strung up by his neck and executed, it couldn't have happened to a more deserving character.

Doctor Who Introduces First Transgender Character As Eighth Doctor Companion

Doctor Whointroduces its first openly transgender character as the Eighth Doctor's companion. British actress Rebecca Root will portray the character in a new Big Finish audio drama to be released this month. Root's character marks another critical step for better representation inDoctor Who.

The show premiered in 1963 and has been on the air for more than fifty years. Doctor Who's main character is a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, who regenerates into a new face whenever they are mortally wounded. (Essentially this is the show's clever way of replacing the actor/actress playing the Doctor with someone new.) While the show continually moves forward when the Doctor regenerates, the Big Finish audio dramas allow for fans to listen to brand new adventures with some of their past favorite Doctors. For example, Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor originally appeared solely on screen in the failed 1996 Doctor Who movie and in the 2013 mini-episode, "The Night of the Doctor." However, fans loved McGann's portrayal so much that he's returned for countless Doctor Who audio dramas, to include the upcoming story with Rebecca Root's transgender character.

Related: The Doctor Who Movie With Paul McGann Was A Complete Failure: Here's Why

Rebecca Root, who is a trans woman, will play the character Tania Bell in the new audio drama, "Stranded." Bell will be a companion of Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor. Root was in several previous Doctor Who audio dramas, but this will be the first time she gets to play a transgender companion. Here's what the actress had to say about the character in an interview with Nerdist.com, and what it would've meant to see a trans person on the show while growing up.

"Sheâ€Â™s [Tania Bell] a person like all the other people I have played and hope to play in the future. Sheâ€Â™s not perfect, but sheâ€Â™s not a mess, and certainly, I donâ€Â™t think her gender identity has any influence on her behavior in the story...It would have been amazing to see a trans person in a show like Doctor Who. In fact, to see a Trans person period would have been amazing. But I [grew] up in the â€Â™70s and society was differently populated back then, and gender ID was not really 'a thing.'"

Representation matters, and there's no show better for the job than Doctor Who. One of the sci-fi show's central themes is acceptance and understanding others, despite differences. The Doctor has many memorable quotes throughout the series, but one of the best is, "You know in 900 years of time and space I've never met anybody that wasn't important before." (Attributed to Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor.) It's also exciting for Root's character to make her debut during Pride Month, which is meant to celebrate the LGBTQIA community. Like Root mentions in the interview, hopefully, Tania Bell will continue to be the Eighth Doctor's companion beyond, "Stranded."

Hopefully, this is the start of even more diversity for Doctor Who. It's high time for the Tardis to feature companions of every shape, size, color, creed, and gender identity. Science fiction is about exploring how the universe can be, it's great potential, and what we should strive for. The genre can also serve as a warning of what should change now to create a better future. Representation is crucial for so many reasons, and for Doctor Who fans worldwide, seeing someone like them travel with the Doctor is just simply fantastic.

Alastair MacLean's The Guns of Navarone

A long movie that doesn't seem long is a carefully-crafted motion picture. Such is the case with The Guns of Navarone(1961), which clocks in at a brisk 158 minutes.

Based on Alastair MacLean's 1957 novel, it tells the story of a small military team tasked with destroying two huge German guns. The artillery are located on the island of Navarone and prevent Allied battleships from rescuing 2,000 British soldiers marooned on an adjacent isle. Since the guns are housed inside a cave, they cannot be destroyed by aerial bombs. The team's only hope to scale a dangerous mountain on the most lightly guarded side of the island.

David Niven and Gregory Peck.
The team consists of: Captain Keith Mallory (Gregory Peck), a famous mountain climber who is fluent in German; Major Roy Franklin (Anthony Quayle), who hatched the plan; Corporal Miller (David Niven), an explosives genius; "Butcher" Brown (Stanley Baker), a mechanic and knife expert; a young soldier (James Darren) born on Navarone, but raised in New York; and Colonel Andrea Stavros (Anthony Quinn), a Greek officer who blames Mallory for the death of his family. Irene Pappas and Gia Scala co-star as two resistance fighters who live on Navarone.

Richard Harris has a brief cameo.
Each of the stars is perfectly matched with his role, even though Peck, Niven, and Quinn are too old for their characters. That fact becomes immaterial as the action speeds along to the thrilling climax. MacLean's story constantly throws obstacles in the team's path: a curious German patrol, a savage storm at sea, capture by the Nazis, and the presence of a spy. The highlight, though, comes in the film's first half when Peck and Quinn have to climb the treacherous cliff at night...in the rain. On a DVD commentary, director J. Lee Thompson said he thought this nail biting sequence was too long (I disagree!).

The Guns of Navarone is so expertly made--and placed in historical context--that one assumes it was based on fact. Actually, the plot is wholly fictitious, although MacLean's tale was inspired by the Battle of Leros in the Aegean Sea during World War II. The novel was MacLean's second and become a bestseller. Following the box office success of the movie adaptation, other MacLean novels were made into movies, notably The Satan Bug (1965), Where Eagles Dare (1968), and Ice Station Zebra (1968).

Harrison Ford in Force 10.
MacLean wrote a sequel in 1968, Force 10 from Navarone, in which Mallory, Miller, and Stavros are sent on a mission to Yugoslavia. A movie version was planned in the late 1960s with Peck, Niven, and Quinn reprising their roles. However, the production was delayed and didn't reach the screen until 1978. By then, Robert Shaw and Edward had been cast as Mallory and Miller. The plot bore little resemble to MacLean's novel. The supporting cast included Harrison Ford (Stars Wars was released a year earlier) and Barbara Bach (who had just appeared in The Spy Who Loved Me).

Darkseid Unleashes Omega Beams In Zack Snyder's Justice League Fan Art

Darkseid takes aim with his infamous Omega Beams in a new work of Justice League Snyder Cut fan art. Created by legendary comic book writer-artist Jack Kirby, the character debuted via a cameo appearance in 1970's Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #134. He subsequently made his first more prominent appearance in Forever People #1 in early 1971. Since then, Darkseid became one of the most acclaimed and popular villains, not just in the world of DC Comics but the medium as a whole. As such, he has been adapted multiple times. Most recently, a version of Darkseid has featured in DC Universe's animated Harley Quinn series. A less comical iteration also featured in Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, voiced by Tony Todd.

A live-action version was set to make an appearance in Zack Snyder's Justice League. Though potentially brief, the appearance would have led directly into Justice League 2 and the remainder of Snyder's initial five-movie DCEU plan. Unfortunately, the film went through significant reshoots and other changes when Joss Whedon took over as director. One of the biggest changes was removing Darkseid in favor of making a decidedly underwhelming version of Steppenwolf the movie's sole antagonist. The decision was also one of the primary criticisms levied against Justice League following its release - with many fans still passionately eager to see the ruler of Apokolips on the big screen.

Related: Justice League: Darkseid's Role In The Snyder Cut (& What Hasn't Been Revealed)

Thanks to digital artist SPDRMNKYXXIII, fans can now get a glimpse of how the character might have looked. Set against a desolate and obliterated backdrop similar to that glimpsed in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's Knightmare sequence, Darkseid stands tall and calmly powerful. According to the image's description, Darkseid is addressing Henry Cavill's version of Superman, vowing to make him watch the decimation of humanity. Furthermore, the image itself has Darkseid unleashing his Omega Beams. Check out the full image below:

Similar to one of Superman's own powers, the Omega Beams are laser-like rays that are omitted from his eyes. As depicted, however, Darkseid's attack isn't restricted to firing straight and can lock on to specific targets. Equally, they are much more powerful - able to not only harm Kryptonians but destroy entire planets. They are also fast enough to catch speedsters like Barry Allen aka The Flash. Stemming from a cosmic source known as the Omega Effect, the energy can also be used to teleport himself or others across time and space. As much as they can be used to destroy, the Omega Beams can also be used to resurrect people at Darkseid's will.

Fortunately, it was announced that Snyder's original vision for Justice League will be released via HBO Max in 2021. Subsequently, Ray Fisher confirmed his role as Darkseid. It remains to be seen just how big of a role the villain will have in the film. However, it's been reported that Snyder's version also included a visual history lesson documentary Darkseid's backstory. Whether or not that means there will be a seen of him unleashing his Omega Beams is equally up in the air. Whatever the case, the above art offers an impressive imagining of how it might look and will at least whet some appetites until the Snyder Cut of Justice League is released.

Netflix's Defenders Get Comics Accurate Costumes in Fan Art

New fan art gives Netflix'sThe Defenderscomics accurate costumes. The Defenders was a miniseries airing in 2017 that brought together Marvel Television and Netflix. It also united the Marvel comics heroes Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Iron Fist. At that point, all four characters also led their own series, with Daredevil coming first in 2015. The Defenders are sometimes described as a grittier version of the Avengers, often referred to as the Marvel Street-Level Heroes. The partnership between Netflix and Marvel was a success initially. However, Marvel parent company Disney planning a streaming service of its own (Disney+) soured the relationship, leading Netflix to cancel all of its Defenders series.

Many fans are hoping there may be a silver lining, as Marvel can now introduce the Defenders to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though the shows take place within the MCU's continuity, none of the characters have appeared in MCU movies. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait awhile longer for that, as the original Netflix/Marvel deal reportedly prohibits Marvel from using the Defenders without Netflix for two years after cancellation. However, that hasn't stopped fans from discussing the recasting of the heroes for the MCU, which seems likely to happen at some point.

In the meantime, artist Nicolas Tetreault-Abel has shared a poster for The Defenders featuring the characters in comics accurate costumes. The image includes the original actors, but adds Iron Fist's traditional mask from the comics, for example. Check out the poster showing all four Defenders below:

The Netflix/Marvel shows took a different approach to superhero costumes than most have in the past. Instead of flashy looks, the Defenders favored civilian wear. For example, Jessica Jones' leather jacket became an iconic part of her wardrobe on her standalone series. The Defenders costume designer Stephanie Maslansky has spoken about this in the past, saying the character's "leather jacket and her clothes protect her from having to deal with the outside world." Notably, Jessica Jones doesn't have her usual jacket on in this fan art. Luke Cage is also missing his hoodie, which Maslansky has said has a cultural significance, explaining, "We knew that making a black man wear a hoodie, especially a bullet-ridden hoodie, was going to have a lot of resonance. It did, and it still does."

All told, the fan poster for The Defenders is a fascinating exploration of what the characters might have looked like if Marvel took a more comics accurate approach. However, there's no denying the impact the modern looks had on the Defenders series, which were often praised for their more grounded approach to superhero storytelling. It will also be interesting to see how the Defenders look when they inevitable show up in the MCU. It's possible they may look something like the way they do in this poster.

Destiny 2: Season of Arrivals - How to Heroic the New Contact Public Event

At the start Destiny 2: Season of Arrivals, guardians are already fighting against the early stages of the Darkness's decent onto Io in the hopes of slowing, if not stopping it completely. A new public event named Contact allows players to imitate Gambit by defeating waves of enemies, collecting motes, and depositing them in order to harvest that energy for the Drifter.

Related: Destiny 2: Season of Arrivals - How to Access The New Player Level Boost

Contact has a total of 4 waves unlike gambit, and the required light level is 1040. Also unlike Gambit, players will encounter two enemy factions at once instead of one; either the vex or the cabal accompanied by Taken. This guide will show players how to get the Heroic finish for this Public event, and earn some extra rewards.

When players are bashing enemies, taking, and banking motes, the Darkness ship will randomly cause a beam of light to project onto a slightly distant space on the map. If players follow the direction of said beam, there will be a pool of energy with two shielded enemies guarding it; usually Minotaurs or Centurions. Players will notice them attempting to extract a "bloom" with the help of a champion enemy. The goal is to defeat them all, extract the bloom, and bank it like the motes. The bloom won't count as a mote, so it will not stop players from picking up more motes since it doesn't consume part of the 10 counter limit.

Players must do this roughly 3-4 times, resulting in the prompt at the top of the screen declaring the start of the Heroic portion of the event. There is a possibility that players might not kill the enemies attempting to extract the orb before the ring disappears, don't worry. Even if when the champion attempts to escape, killing it will cause the orb to drop which players can pick up and still collect. The goal is to retrieve all orbs before the enemy carrying them disappears. A large, and more powerful Taken boss will spawn after the 4th wave if successful in making it Heroic, and players will have to kill it before time runs out. There are 3 different Heroic bosses at the end of this event, and killing all 3 will earn players a triumph in for the Arrivals seal. Initiating the Heroic variant will also increase, if not guarantee a chance for an Umbral Engram to drop, so make sure to collect and bank those blooms to earn more opportunities for player-determined loot.

When New Pokémon Journeys Episodes Release On Netflix

Thefirst 12 episodes of Pokémon Journeys: The Series are now available on Netflix for U.S. audiences, but fans will have to waitthree more months for the next 12 episodes. Pokémon Journeys is the 23rd season of the long-running animated series featuring enthusiastic Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum and his loyal Pikachu. In April 2020, Netflix announced that Pokémon Journeys would premiere exclusively on the streaming service in the United States on June 12.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series introduces a new protagonist, Goh, who shares Ash's dream of catching 'em all but in particular hopes to one day capture a Mew, one of the rarest Pokémon. Goh and Ash team up for new adventures in Pokémon Journeys after bonding over their shared love of Pokémon and grand ambitions as trainers. They are also joined by supporting character Chloe, an old friend of Goh's. The series features a new theme song from the band Walk Off The Earth, called "The Journey Starts Today."

According to the official press release from The Pokémon Company, 12 new episodes of Pokémon Journeys: The Series will release on Netflix every three months for the duration of the season. That means that Pokémon fans should look out for new episodes of the show in mid-September 2020. Pokémon seasons typically consist of 40-50 episodes each, so there should be plenty more adventures to look forward to over the next year.

Many TV shows have been delayed or put on hold as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Pokémon Journeys: The Series was among them. The series went on hiatus in Japan shortly before the Netflix deal was announced, but episodes recently resumed airing and the Netflix release schedule is not expected to be affected by the break. The spread of coronavirus has not been as severe in Japan as it has in the U.S. and other Western countries, and Japanese prime minister ShinzÅ Abe lifted the national state of emergency in May. For fans of Pokémon and other anime series, this means that there shouldn't be any further delays.

The Pokémon franchise has also been busy in other media, with the latest games in the main series, Pokémon Sword and Shield, selling more than 17 million copies worldwide since their release in November 2019. Last year, the first live-action Pokémon movie Detective Pikachu became the highest-grossing video game movie to date, and a sequel is already in development. Until more news emerges about that project, however, fans can hear that signature "Pika-pika" in Pokémon Journeys on Netflix.

Why Netflix's Dating Around Is the Most Genuine Dating Show Ever

Netflix's Dating Around is not only enjoyable but elegant, genuine and relatable. Many viewers would agree that this dating reality show is actually based on reality and showcases real people looking out for suitable partners.

Unlike many reality shows, this series features some really touching heart to heart conversations. We see cast members are really nervous when they first meet their blind date. Throughout the night, they exchange stories and ask many questions to build a rapport with each other. Each participant is polite and puts their best foot forward, just like we all do. There are awkward pauses, moments of banter, gushing joy as well as rejections - every expression and move seems organic and not fabricated for the screens. Kudos to the show's production team, who planned their camera set up in such a way that it didn't intimidate the participants and let them remain the way they are.

Related: 90 Day Fiance: How To Watch Happily Ever After & B90 Strikes Back

Instead of an over the top and extravagant set or locations, these dates take place in New Orleans's beautiful restaurants and bars - exactly where daters like to go out in this modern age. The city that is known for its round-the-clock nightlife worked perfectly as the backdrop for every episode. For a brief moment, we even forget that it's a reality show because it gives us such a real-life experience, especially when couples are seen walking on the streets, holding hands, and gradually approaching for kisses.

Several viewers don't enjoy watching those fiery and manipulated on-camera confessions in 90 day fiance or Too Hot To Handle. Maybe that's why we don't find any confessionals in this series, which is like a breath of fresh air. The creators of the show carefully designed the format and didn't include any exaggerated behind the scenes drama. Plus, there was no mocking of daters to churn out funny content, which looked like a pretty bold step and could have easily repulsed the audience. In an interview, the co-creator of the show, Chris Culvenor, said, "We didn't want (daters) to sit down and say something outrageous, like in a 2005 reality show."

What film did you watch knowing nothing about going in, but were gob-smacked by how much you enjoyed it?

I've had it happen a few times, most explicitly with Withnail & I, which I found at a good DVD rental shop, never had heard of it before, but was familiar with George Harrison's Hand Made Films for Time Bandits & their other film with Richard E Grant, How to Get Ahead in Advertising. So I went from never hearing of Withnail & I to it being maybe my most loved film in a matter of hours.

Evil Dead 2, & Raising Arizona were similar. But with each I had heard the title before, and had misconceptions of what the film might be.

Altered States was like Evil Dead 2 for me, in that I assumed it was just a typical horror film, not a Paddy Chayefsky/Ken Russel mind fuck, and I was only god damn 13!. Ha. So good...

‘The Final Comedown’ Offers Wisdom, Bloodshed, and Angry Catharsis

Welcome toThe Prime Sublime, a weekly column dedicated to the underseen and underloved films buried beneath page after page of far more popular fare on Amazon’s Prime Video collection. We’re not just cherry-picking obscure titles, though, as these are movies that we find beautiful in their own, often unique ways. You might even say we think they’re sublime…

â€Å“Sublime /səˈblÄ«m/: of such excellence, grandeur, or beauty as to inspire great admiration or aweâ€

The urge to watch movies that are entertaining and unchallenging in these grim times is overwhelming and normal, but I tend to go the opposite direction. I’ve gotten better since the terror attack on the Parisian concert venue in 2015 sent me into a four-hour spiral of increasingly violent and grisly YouTube videos — look, we all deal in our own ways — but I still typically turn towards dark entertainment when trying to smother real-world horrors.

All of which is to say that I’m drawn toward movies like The Final Comedown (1972) in response to ubiquitous news stories and cell phone videos highlighting police atrocities, the overwhelming abundance of which are committed against Black Americans. This early 70s feature tackles the problem head on and highlights the sad truth making the film timeless for all the wrong reasons. Nearly fifty years later, and this â€Å“great†country of ours still hasn’t gotten its shit together on a very simple premise — Black lives matter.

What̢۪s it about?

Johnny Johnson (Billy Dee Williams) is a young man pushed to action by a country unwilling to grow up and do better by its citizens. He’s harassed by cops on the streets, he loses jobs due to racist bosses, and the only way he sees to survive is through fighting. Together with friends and like-minded associates he forms a radical group along the lines of the Black Panthers — they’re never named, but the idea is familiar — and as the film opens they’re embroiled in a running gun battle with hundreds of the city’s police officers. Johnny’s shot leaving the others to fend of the cops and secure medical attention for him, and as all of it unfolds the film moves into flashbacks from the perspective of various characters.

We’re made privy to the conversations and police transgressions that led Johnny to this life, we see how a group of young, White liberals attached themselves to the cause even as they fail to comprehend the cost, and we watch older generations — both Black and White — argue for complacency over action. Each time we return to the gun battle, more bodies fall on both sides, and by the time the credits roll the streets are running red with the blood of Blacks, Whites, and boys in blue.

What makes it sublime?

Poster The Final ComedownPosters of Angela Davis and Huey P. Newton hang on Johnny’s wall in a brief opening montage that also includes a rat running around in a little girl’s bedroom, cops gunning down a Black man, Black people heading off to work for White business owners, and more. The contrasts and core argument are clear from the start of writer/director Oscar Williams‘ debut feature. As a director he would follow it with Five on the Black Hand Side (1973), Hot Potato (1976), and Death Drug (1978), but he’s probably best known for writing Black Belt Jones (1974) and Truck Turner (1974). For all their varied success and genre-hopping, though, none of those films can touch the raw anger and seething emotion of The Final Comedown.

Williams’ script is inspired by Jimmy Garrett’s play, We Own the Night, but while there’s evidence of an origin on the stage to be found here in some of the main setups and character interactions, the film finds its cinematic footing in various violent set-pieces. Dozens of cops and radicals alike are shot to death with several falling off roof tops or out windows, and the action is all done on a no-frills budget — some with squibs, some without, it doesn’t matter — propelled by an electrifying jazz-funk score from composer Wade Marcus and musician Grant Green.

It’s an ultra-low budget exploitation movie — Roger Corman himself reportedly contributed a whopping $15k towards the production — as evidenced by the poster (showcasing the film’s alternate title, Blast) working hard to get butts into seats, and it’s arguably an early entry in the so-called blaxploitation genre. It feels more in line with something like The Spook Who Sat By the Door (1973), though, as it’s a call to arms rather than entertainment with romanticized, heightened, or exaggerated anti-heroes as lead characters. These are everyday Black Americans, and Williams reminds viewers of that each time his film pulls away from the action. Johnny’s antics seem extreme to some including his mother and some White friends’ parents, but his litany of frustrations and growing hopelessness is laid bare through glimpses of the racist world he’s a part of.

The film̢۪s main target is the police, obviously, and Williams̢۪ script pulls no punches on that front as we witness abuses both minor and murderous at the hands of the cops. Their transgressions are the key instigation leading to the central gun fight of the film, and Williams doesn̢۪t shy away from showing them brutalized and gunned down too. The end is inevitable, but getting there is a long, drawn-out fight with massive casualties on both sides, but if it̢۪s somehow unclear where Williams̢۪ allegiance sits look no further than the scene of a cop being shot through a window causing his face to slide down the glass leaving his nose resembling that of a certain barnyard animal.

The Final Comedown

â€Å“If we have to die,†says Johnny, â€Å“then let it be so that the language of the young brothers and sisters behind us can be the dialogue of living men.†He’s as sincere in the belief that things can be better as he is that getting there requires bloodshed, and it adds an additional layer of tragedy into the film’s theme as this isn’t a war he chose to fight — it’s a war he has to fight. Not everyone agrees with his methods as some within his community suggest â€Å“It’ll work out, just give it time,†while a young, well-meaning White woman offers that he could just drop out of society to avoid its expectations. â€Å“We can’t drop into nothing because we never had nothing to drop out of,†he replies, adding that her only hope at understanding would be if she could wake up Black on Monday morning.

No mere action movie, this is a film fueled by emotion and rage with themes that in a better world would be seen as historical instead of evergreen. It suggests that no group (outside of the cops) is a monolith — some Blacks disagree with Johnny, some Whites support his cause — while insisting that it’s a problem that can’t be solved without unity, understanding, and support from all directions. The film’s ending isn’t very optimistic in that regard, but recent events in the real world suggest that the tide might actually be turning.

And in conclusion…

â€Å“My dad died fighting Nazis,†says one of Johnny’s friends, â€Å“but he died fighting the wrong ones.†It’s an insanely powerful and sadly prescient line as half a century later the fight against racially fueled police brutality and the abuses of a system that devalues Black lives continues on a daily basis. As raw and clunky as the film is at times, as clear as its low budget is, there are moments, dialogue, and sequences of absolute beauty and power. One example sees armed Black men and women reciting lines from the Declaration of Independence. â€Å“We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal,†they say in unison, and it’s a reminder that no matter how eloquent the words, it’s ultimately action that gives them power.
